Prologue

State Alchemist, outside Botanist's Guild
State Alchemist, outside Botanist's Guild
Welcome to Noctis Leonhart's Guide to Botany. Here you will find the answers to many of your questions about Botany, being a Botanist, and what to do as a Botanist. Specifically, I strive to make your learning and leveling in the field of Botany a bit easier, so that you can move on to enjoy the benefits of being a Master Botanist!

I'd like to begin by saying that this is just a guide. I have written this based on my own experiences and opinions. More importantly, you may find that some things work for you while others may not. If every aspect of the guide does not help you, I apologize, and implore to you to help improve the guide in a constructive and polite manner by posting relevant information or new discoveries on the Discussion page. Most importantly, remember to have fun!

Botany

''The botanist's profession encompasses the procurement of resources from all forms of plant life. This includes harvesting various vegetables and grains, tending to fruit-bearing trees, gathering wild grasses, cultivating fibrous plants for use in textiles, cutting lumber to supply the carpentry trade, and more. This wide range of raw materials draws the custom of various other guilds, notably the Carpenters, Weavers, Alchemists, and Culinarians. Botanists also attempt to educate others about the importance of achieving a symbiotic relationship with Eorzea's plants, rather than carelessly stripping them of their useful parts. This is perhaps best exemplified by the revolutionary irrigation methods devised by Gridania, which first made low-impact, high-yield crop propagation possible. The primary tool of the botanist is the hatchet.''

Beginning The Game As A Botanist

If you decide to begin the game as a Botanist, I recommend you begin in Gridania. This allows easy access to the Botanist's Guild right away, and Gridania's Botany Fieldquests offer good rewards/materials. To begin with you will have the following equipment, which will help you out in your starting endeavors into the world of Botany. (Hover over the name of the item for details.)

The Botanist's Guild

The Greatloam Growery (Botanist's Guild)
The Greatloam Growery (Botanist's Guild)
"The Greatloam Growery was established when the landed Greatloam family made a generous endowment of their plots to the nation of Gridania in the name of Nophica, the Matron. The land is nearly all tilled and cultivated, and now sprouts forth a myriad of flowers, fruits, vegetables, and sturdy forest trees. The Botanists' Guild at the Greatloam Growery sees to the maintenance and upkeep of these lands, and even now continues to dole out small sections to the most promising tenders of their order."

"Come in, come in. And welcome to the Greatloam Growery―the very roots of this Gridania. Gathering is our trade, in all its splendor. From the lumber used to craft bucklers and bedposts, to the ingredients used to cook up Eorzea's breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. Without us botanists, the economy would be in quite a pinch." - Opyltyl

Attributes & Gear

Here is some helpful information regarding the effect attributes, elements, gear, and more while logging and harvesting.

Attribute's Effect on Botany

Two attributes will have an effect on your ability to successfully, and efficiently log and harvest. Your Primary Tool is effected by Strength. Intelligence governs your Secondary Tool. There is some debate on the actual effect STR and INT have on performance, however it is safe to suggest that increasing them will respectively increase your chance of success and or increase your yield.

Equipment's Effect on Botany

The equipment you use and wear also greatly effect your performance while logging or harvesting. There are four different stats available on equipment(tools and gear) that will influence your performance besides STR and INT.

      • Scanning: It isn't currently know exactly what scanning is. However, we do know that Scanning increases Perception at a ratio of 1:1.
      • Output: Increases the number of attempts allowed at a given logging or harvesting node.
      • Gathering: Decreases the gathering remainder while logging. (May give a base increase in success while harvesting or increase yield. Further testing is required on this aspect.)
      • Perception: Increases the chance for HQ yields. (+1/+2/+3)

Raising Your Rank: A Skill Up Guide

Before you grab your hatchet and scythe and rush out the city gates into the wild in search of various timbers and exotic herbs, you may want to go over the basics of logging and harvesting. Feel free to peruse the basics on Lodestone here: Play Guide: Logging & Harvesting

Note: A lot of times people ranking up Botany will tend to rank up Carpentry at the same time since they are already logging regularly and getting the materials needed for skilling up Carpentry.

The tip to speed gathering is utilizing a combination of two harvesting points and the nearest logging point available. Until you get to Rank 18/28/38 for Grade 3/4/5 respectively, it is harder to skill up on a higher Grade than you can currently search for trees using Arbor Call III/IV/V. If you want to skill up early, I recommend high Output gear to maximize the number of attempts you get at each harvest/logging point.

Rank Grade Recommended Skill Up Location Coordinates
1-7 1 Levequests/Camp Bentbranch(The Black Shroud)/Camp Bearded Rock(La Noscea)/Camp Black Brush(Thanalan)
8-17 2 Levequests/Camp Emerald Moss(The Black Shroud)/Camp Skull Valley(La Noscea)/Camp Drybone(Thanalan)
18-27 3 Camp Bloodshore, La Noscea(See image below.) (36,22)(36,23)
28-37 4 Camp Glory, Coerthas(See image below.) (51,29)(51,30)
38-50 5 Camp Iron Lake, La Noscea(See image below.) (20,7)(21,7)

Botany Quests

There are many different quests available to a Botanist, across the realm of Eorzea. You can find Regional Fieldquests available in Gridania, Limsa Lominsa, and Ul'dah, and occasionally a Guild Quest which, so far, always begins in Gridania.

Regional Fieldquests

NOTE: I will be adding the name of each Regional Fieldquest, rewards, etc... as soon as I have the time to sit down and go through each quest, and record all the information. I am still debating on the format (whether to use a table, or bulleting).

Skilling Up With Levequests

Regional Fieldquests offer an alternate route to obtaining SP. Depending on the Fieldquest's Rank (1,10,20,etc...) you can obtain a great amount of skill points if the Grade from which you are logging is of sufficient difficulty.

A few things to keep in mind when using Regional Fieldquests to try and help skill up:

      • Always try the hardest available Fieldquest. Remember more Output means more attempts at each location and thus a higher possible SP gains. If you notice that you are having a hard time succeeding, it may be wiser to switch to gear offering more Gathering.
      • If you are only looking for skill ups, it is better to ignore any Regional Fieldquest that is more than 10 Ranks below you. The SP is lousy, and if you don't need the reward(most likely Guild Marks), you will probably want to do something else, that isn't a waste of time.

Guild Quests

As to not spoil the storyline, I will try to provide enough information for you to begin the quests below, and be prepared for them, but without revealing any details about the quest itself.
