The provisioner makes most of the in game food and drink. There are common (provisioner essentials) items that can be made. You can obtain several special recipes through quests.
Levels 1 - 10 are a snap if you elect to do the tradeskill quests which run you through the basics of crafting. I strongly recommend that you speak with the artisan trainer that you will find next to a cellar door behind the tower on the Queen's Colony or the Outpost of the Overlord while running amuck on the isles. If you left the islands without talking to the wholesaler in the tradeskill instance, and have not yet obtained artisan level 2, you will need hail the "crafting trainer" outside a crafting instance on the mainland in order to progress to level 2 artisan. If you are a native of Kelethin (Fae or otherwise), you must speak to the Crafting Trainer found outside of Tunare's Pages to obtain artisan 2. (On the Outpost of the Overlord, his name is Trainer Arthur Merrin, for the Queen's Colony, his name is Trainer Gregory Collins). After conversing with them, you will receive an inventory item called Starting A Tradeskill Profession (Although I do believe this process has changed a tad, so someone with a baby crafter or that has done it recently feel free to correct this. My crafters are old crafters). You will be able to craft all of the level 1 - 9 items that all other professions can as this is the range used for getting new crafters acquainted with the crafting system.
At level 10 (talk to crafter trainer at level 9)you will select craftsman for your profession. At this point your spectrum of items to craft is narrowed down for level 10 - 19 to carpenter (household items, boxes, broker sales crates), provisioner (food/drink), and woodworker (wooden weapons, bucklers, round shields, totems) items. This was put in place to give you a feel for what those classes can make and help you decide what you really want to do. Once you hit level 20 (talk to crafter trainer at level 19) you will select provisioner.
You will find that as you work your way through levels on the provisioner that it can be slow going. You can use the tradeskill writs to help push along the tradeskill experience. I recommend starting off with regular writs to get the feel for the writ system and move on to the rush order writs once you have a better feel for the way the writs work. About the best recommendation I can make for leveling is to make one of each item in your recipe books at least (you receive bonus experience for the first time you make an item) and then fill in the gap of xp needed to level with tradeskill writs. Rush orders give more tradeskill xp and have the bonus of earning Ironforge exchange faction which will enable you to buy additional recipes and faction goodies later down the road.
Once you hit level 50 you can head to the Isle of Mara and do the quest line there to earn a 36-slot artisan's satchel to hold harvestables and a charm slot tool that will give you +10 to your primary tradeskill ability and a 1% reduction in fail rates. Provisioners will seek out the Nurwin family to start the quest line to earn these 2 items. Note that you have to be level 50+ in your primary tradeskill in order to receive this quest and of course you must earn the trust of the villagers which is not all that difficult. Requires: 240 gathering, 240 foresting Given by: Tai Nurwin, Basic Premise: Tai is preparing for a feast, and needs a bit of help. As a skilled provisioner, you are sent off to find some exotic items, but decide to fudge it a bit with some local substitutes. Spoilers: The salamander eggs are pretty rough for folks to see (just like a salamander to make things difficult!). We've been told it is best be in the water near the gazebo, ogling the base of the rock pile (-141.40, 0.25, -110.37) if you want to find them. Other handy locations include: vegetable dye (21.09, 15.84, -57.91), pickles in a barrel on the outpost side of the docks (-39.37, -2.55, 143.92), Dried fruit (48, 8.31, -49.65), Ant legs in the dining room to the right of Tai Nurwin (-8.72, 12.95, -94.17), Squid ink next to the house near racks of drying fish (-16.62, 0.80, -3.49)
Also at 50, you can now do the tradeskill missions to add a little variety to the grind. You will need to complete Ship Out which starts in Moors of Ykesha by talking to Aymee Quickspoke. You will also need to complete Cannon's Away to complete Ship Out. The tradeskill missions if done solo can take 3 hours to complete. The nice thing about doing these is that for each successfully countered Far Seas Innovation, you receive a Tier 8 rare and for successfully completing the mission you will receive a Far Seas Token and a chest will drop. The chest can contain several goodies such as 1 of the 4 books for crafting the Shard Equipment, T8 rares, and pieces of crafting jewelry which have bonuses for crafting.
Once you hit level 80, you will be able to do the tradeskill epic for the provisioner. You will need to gain faction with Bathezid's Watch (-20,000 or better) to start this quest. You will also need 100 in your gathering skill. T5 rares, and several imbue materials from T7 and T8 will be required and you will need to enlist the services of all the other professions for final combines. You can gain faction through adventuring or through the New Lands, New Profits quest and then grinding tradeskill writs to finish out your Bathezid Watch faction (neighborhood of 27 writs (+750 faction per writ) to get from -39,750 to -19,500.
Quest 1 for the tradeskill epic is Sarnak Supply Stocking (all crafters). Quest 2 is Bixie Distraction (all crafters). Quest 3 is Anything for Jum Jum (all crafters). Quest 4 is Craftsman Errands (craftsmen - carpenter, provisioner, woodworker). Quest 5 is Proof in the Pudding (all crafters). Quest 6 is the Finale. Reward is the lovely Earring of the Solstice (which when worn allows you to see red shinies), plus there are secondary rewards of Cloak of the Master Provisioner, Provisioner Mastery Certification (house item scroll), a prefix title (Master Provisioner), and one of each T8 rare resources.
There are RoK faction recipes for provisioners once you obtain enough faction with Bathezid's Watch, Riliss, and Danak Shipyards. MoY also have some tradeskill recipes once you earn faction. Currently I know that there are some with Grobb. I haven't fully explored all of the factions yet so am not positive there are other faction recipes with this zone.
