Riot Games will soon launch its new Battle Training Tutorial, and not only is this program a bundle of great information, but it also showcases some great things that can be accomplished in League of Legends.
I find this quest system so interesting, however, because of what it suggests that League of Legends is capable of. I loved how I could get little side-quests running while focusing on the larger "objective" of the Battle Training (to kill a tower, then to kill all the towers, then to kill an inhibitor, etc). I recall someone from Riot Games talking about PvE maps potentially making their way into League of Legends, and after witnessing this unique system, I can really see how that would be possible. Can you imagine playing PvE competitive objective maps where the PvP was secondary to completing a final PvE objective? I'm drooling just thinking about what sort of things could be possible with this.
To get back to the Battle Training Tutorial, the training itself is quite thorough and succinct, in spite of the piles of information it needs to cram into new players. While I'm sure that it helps that I am a veteran of League of Legends myself, and so it's obvious that this tutorial wouldn't be so overwhelming, I really tried to see it through the eyes of someone new. Granted, the game cannot teach valuable tactics like the proper way to play support champions and evading enemies based on line of sight mechanics, but it does a fantastic job of breaking LoL down into its basic fundamental parts.
As a veteran player, it is a given that I would be more excited about specific mechanics employed in the creation of the Battle Training program, but I am also curious to see just how much of an impact this tutorial will have on raising the abilities of new players. Competitive League of Legends players often talk about things like "ELO Hell," where, at the lower levels, the game has become such a mixed bag of clueless players that climbing the ladder to play with decent teammates is based on pure, random luck. With Riot Games taking steps to teach its new player base with in-depth, high-quality tutorials like this, however, here's to hoping that this leads to a more informed community of new Summoners.
