Full Metal Alchemist-- Subbed or Dubbed?Follow

FMA dub is acceptable, but not one of the best I've seen. I'd rate the sub a little higher, because the Japanese voice actors are quite good.

Lol, but I don't really want to watch BOTH. So I still need to make the choice. XD

I can't say I've seen a dub superior to FMA. None of them manage to capture the emotions or personalities the character is supposed to have.

I'm not looking for a general sub vs. dub debate. I'm just curious which people prefer in this specific series.

And I'm talking about the first series, not Brotherhood.

Never actually watched CB, lol. But I've heard good things.

I prefer the sub, but I have no problem watching the dub for this select anime.

Okay wow, I hate those voices from the clips, but maybe it's just because I"m used to the other ones.

On subject, I thought that the dub of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya was done fairly well.

Crispin Freeman was born for that role, IMO.

There are a lot of reasons many people stay with subs.
1. Acquired taste. Many anime fans watch fansubbed anime to get early release or save cash, and so familiarity breeds predilection.
2. Voice talent. Since anime is produced in Japan, they tend to have a wider selection of talent suited for the types of roles developed. A lot of American voice over actors do adult comedy or children's shows, and this may not be suitable for more dramatic anime series.
3. Cheese relief. It just doesn't sound as lame when ichigo says "getsuga tenshou" as it does when he says "moon fang heaven-piercer."

Dear god, don't get me started on the Bleach dub. I especially hate it when they leave some words in Japanese (no real good translation? Want to keep some names intact? Lazy?), then butcher the pronunciation.

But yes, mostly familiarity (although the first half dozen series I watched were all dubbed... I miss Toonami =(.), with a side of the Japanese voice actors sound less fake to me.

A single episode of the Naruto dub is enough to make you claw your eardrums out.

Then again, the voices are kinda annoying in Japanese, too.

I LOVE the "older" shippuuden versions though (Japanese).

Too bad Naruto got so ridiculously bad I can't stand to watch or read it anymore.

This. I can't watch an episode of it, subbed or dubbed, because every time I try, I hear that kid's voice in my head.

My best friend and I used to read/watch it in Japanese, before it got too ridiculous (luckily, we both started AFTER Shippuuden began, so we could skip the awful fillers. Well, she did. I watched it first and didn't realize it was all filler until 2-5 arcs in. I was like, "WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?!?!").

We kinda started saying "BUH-lieve it!" to friends when they were being stupid. No one got it but us. [EDIT] We watched it in Japanese [/EDIT]

Then we stopped watching Shippuuden, because (while their filler arcs were better from a 3-rd party view, they COMPLETELY clashed with the story of the show, creating villains that appeared and went down in one arc that were stronger than the villains of the actual story).

Then we stopped reading Naruto, because Sasuke is one of the stupidest characters ever. And we could tell things were about to get extremely ridiculous. A lot of people at her school read it and talk, so she has learned some things that have been going on. She tells me our decision to stop was the best thing we've ever done. XD

Like I said, though, I really like the adult voices for Naruto and Sasuke. They are actually very smooth, when they both had that whiny adolescent thing in the first show. Plus, in Shippuuden, Naruto tends to be more serious, so he's never screaming like he used to.

Hell, I'll put it out there. I prefer the Bleach subbed but I'm fine with the Bleach dubbed. I like the idiosyncratic descriptors and I like Mr. Hat and Clogs English voice. There are plenty of dubs that are fine.

If all dubs were of quality then I'd choose them over subs. But that's only because it's sometimes a pain in the ass to read subs when laying down sideways lol.
