I used to play on Fairy years ago, and as the subject states, I've been contemplating a return to ffxi.
Just wondering if there's any way these days to salvage my old characters, or if I'll be leveling up from scratch again.

I believe after 1yr, your character is gone, but you might want to call SE and find out for sure. If so the whole start over thing is in effect, but they made it easier to lv now so, won't be as bad as before.

You should be able to salvage your characters, I had friends that quit before I met you and they came back last year. =)

I came back after 2 years and my main character was still there. Lost a couple of mules, though...
Reactivated today, 2 years after last logging in all characters exist, including mules.
Wonder if my toon is still there after 6 years >_>

Oh and I'm kinda playing LoTRO now. Testing the waters for a few months. So far, it's cool.
I gave up on WoW, need to find another MMO to play when not on XI. Any ideas?

If had the spare income to blow, I'd probably keep a WoW account active for the hell of it, but having never been able to endure taking a character past the mid-40s, I dunno if that'd ever really change.

Try LoTRO. I just started and so far, it's pretty cool. Fuss-free lvling and cool graphics.
Or if you like PvP, pick up WAR. I've played for about a month but didn't like it because I hate PvP. Crafting system is a bitch.
You can try Age of Conan. I played it when it launched and it was buggy as hell. Nifty combat system, very nice finishing moves and full frontal nudity. Not sure how it is now but you'll need a monster of a PC to appreciate the awesome graphics of that game...oh and did I mention boobies ?
And there's always Guild Wars. Free to play (have to buy the game though), beautiful graphics and a cool story. Again, I played when it launched and loved it until it got stale. Haven't played the expansions but judging from the reviews, it's a pretty safe bet.
Did you give up on WoW before or after Wrath of the Lich King ? If it's after, then I wouldn't recommend going back but if you quit before the latest expansion, I would recommend that you go back for one more spin. I personally love this expansion, it kinda got me back to playing WoW when I gave up during Burning Crusade (which sucks so much that it'll beat even an industrial sized vacuum cleaner).

Mid-40s still suck but the new mid level quest hub does help gove you a small boost to 48 or so. Basically, lvling from 40 to 58 is the longest drag because of the quests but once you hit the Outlands it goes by pretty quick and at lvl 68, you hop over to Northrend. Your lvls will fly once you hit Northrend. I would personally say that at least 80% of the stuff there is new and if you're a lore nerd, Northrend will keep you glued way pass lvl 80.
Guild wars I beta tested, then played for about yr after and quit. Conan, I haven't tried yet, heard it was good. LoTR, I have been looking at it, but not sure yet.
Just after 6yrs of FFXI, I might want to change up to something else for a bit. Might go back on WoW and finish my Character for now lol.

TBH Everquest 2 isnt all that bad. I played it for a little while. It is definately a refreshing change from ffxi.
