I started on this server in Bastok but ...apparently nobody levels in parties? I'm a 12 monk because people told me to level it first.

Also, I can't level because there are no low level items to help on the bastok AH, I dont have a lot of money, just enough, but...there's..no H2H weapons on it.

..I can't buy anything, and i've only seen two other people in bastok aside from me...

..is this hopeless?

Yeah I've been soloing my RDM up to level 15. It's hard for me to find a party since I'm living in Vietnam right now, so I'm really playing at the wrong time to get a party going. But if you head out to Valkrum dunes there's usually a bunch of people out there, and you can just buy the low level items from NPC vendors. Don't worry about getting great stat boosting equips until about level 20. They're nice to have, but you'll outlevel them pretty quickly.

That's my advice but I'm a noob too, so don't trust it completely.

Low level parties have become rare with the advent of FoV. Many prefer to solo their low level jobs these days. Don't be afraid to ask for a duo. Best advise is grind out those early levels, find a helpful linkshell for help with the sub job quest and help you getting you to Jeuno. The game gets considerably easier once you hit level 20 and you are able to get a chocobo license. Jenuo's auction house is where you will find a better selection of gear for all levels.

yeah, most people would rather skip the party where you always seem to have either
A. an idiot getting everyone killed
B. people going AFK and causing downtime

The game sure has changed...
I just returned to FFXI after a 2 year hiatus. (My girlfriend and I couldn't stand waiting for FFXIV any longer). I was expecting the starting city AH's to be decently stocked with the usual low level gear.. There's none of that! Resorting to NPC stores for anything was unheard of back in the day, yet Port-Windy is my first stop whenever I need anything now!

I was also shocked to find that soloing or duoing was possible way past level 12 now. I'm rather enjoying the FoV thing they've got going on. It's a great feeling to not have to have elite gear to get a party in the dunes too; the armor is simply not available to low level players in the starting cities with these empty Auction Houses.

'Haven't made it to Jeuno yet, but I'll bet thing there have changed quite a bit as well. Are Quifm Island parties still in fashion?

It can be hit or miss with Quifum Island parties. You may get lucky at level 19 and be the level sync designee in a PL party, or you will wait around for hours with flag up. But it has always been that way. Best advise keep soloing in the dunes or wherever you like with your flag up with a /sea com message stating the levels you wish to party at, or start your own party. Most of all keep it fun ^^
