So. It's been ages since I played FFXI and as we all know so well. We always want to come back, eventually.
I've been wondering if my old friends are still around and what I would find if I log back on.

Perhaps you all can help me and enlighten me as to what has changed (in general) and how the community is nowadays? In other words, dissuade or tempt me! ;)

Tattersail... that name sounds vaguely familiar, it's been many years since you played hasn't it? Well regardless, welcome back!

The game has changed quite a bit. The lower-level (75 and below) events have mostly been fixed up so you can do them solo, even Dynamis. A lot of new content has been added that focuses more on reward for every player rather than making players help each other out, which has sort of turned out to be both good and bad. It's easier to set up shout groups or just do things with one or two friends and still accomplish things, but linkshells are more social and players in general are more self-serving as a result. The days of going to Jeuno, shouting for help on something, and actually getting help fairly quickly, are long gone.

That being said, there's lots of fun still to be had! Abyssea is a huge new addition that you've likely entirely missed, and there's just a ridiculous amount of stuff to do in Abyssea. It generally only requires 2 or 3 players to do most things in Abyssea, too. In fact much of it can be done solo. If you're returning, Abyssea is where I would start. Start out just by getting a feel for it and set some small goals. I suggest trying to obtain an Azure Abyssite of Celerity as an early goal, it requires going to Abyssea - Konschtat and killing tonberries. It's usually the first thing I take people to do in Abyssea, just to get their feet wet.

Thanks Pergatory!

Yeah I quit in 2009. So halfway through Aht Urghan and before Wings of the Goddess.
I have to admit, quite a few things seem rather appealing. Unfinished business with Die-in-a-mess and some Gods, HNMS etc. And by unfinished business I mean revenge. =P

If you can get your old character back it will speed things up tremendously, just with unlocks and stuff. If I were you I'd reactivate, start your abyssea stones generating, go to the past and join a nation, then get your Voidwatch stones generating, then head down to B. Oubliette, join a leech killing party (get the book page for the exp bonuses) and get yourself to 99 (doing all the LBs and stuff).

By the time you've done that you should have some stones ready for you so you can do some work in Abyssea. And although it might sound counter-intuitive, if you had your mages nicely skilled, you could probably buy some half decent AH gear and start working on voidwatch as well. If you joined a [bastok/windy/sandy] city climb you'd be fine as long as you are decently skilled up and have your spells. Just look up the procs.

You might even get lucky with one of the few nifty pieces that come from the city tiers. In fact I'd almost suggest working on Voidwatch city clears before Abyssea because you can buy voidwatch stones if needed (unlike abyssea), and it will get you a decent supply of cruor to start out with when you hit abyssea - so you will be able to unlock fluxes and stuff.

I linked my POL ID to my SE ID and all my characters were still listed. I'm guessing that means it's all there still.
I read up on the changes since halfway through Aht Urghan and it seems very interesting for sure.

Great! And I suggest doing this quest to get some new immediate teleports:
http://wiki.bluegartr.com/bg/Researchers_from_the_West

That's the other advantage of doing voidwatch right away - it unlocks some helpful teleports (they cost cruor) Starting the abyssea stone countdown also allows you to unlock maws (but you will need cruor to teleport to them)

The quest linked above uses energy from crystals to power teleports, so probably more helpful to start. Also you could do them all on brd/whm 75 with generous use of sneak/invis.

Feel free to look me up if you reactivate. I'm not playing a tremendous amount currently, but my sub is active. I'm in Pacific timezone and usually on between 6:30-10pm if I am playing at all.

Welp, I dunnit haha. Reactivated two days ago. Sheesh, took some time to get used to it again.
Thanks for all the info guys! That was most helpful.

I forgot I did have WotG. I went to past once or twice. Didn't really get in to that. But well, first things first, unlocking all the new areas haha.
