..check out my new weapon, weapon of choice.

Okay right. For my Ballistics module at university I have an assignment of planning an assassination. The ins and outs are as follows:

200m from target
Target in a moving armoured 4x4
Bullet resistant glass
light armour

So I know we have a bunch of military types here. So I figured I'd ask you guys for advice, because my first thought was f*cking
anti-material rifle with armour piercing incendiary BMG rounds. I mean, who doesn't love something that can kill a building paired with something that pierces armour and then catches fire?

Probably overkill, though. So, thoughts?

You have no idea. Last year they had to do a module called "Disasters", which wasn't as fun as it sounded. Basically it was a bunch of crap like...well you know the Tacoma Bridge resonance issue. Kind of dull, really.

So the guy we have no was all, "Pfft no that's boring as sh*t", so now he just teaches us about guns and ammo. It's more geared towards the Forensic Scientists we share the lecture with, but it's still pretty interesting stuff.

Plus he shows us crap like this for lulz:

I'm not exactly a military type, but I'm bored and formerly a physics student, so I'll ask questions even if I have nothing to add. I'm assuming we're talking straight out bullets(even if incendiary/explosive/U238(?)) and not allowing things like rockets or mortar fire?

That's right, no explosives. Incendiary rounds are sort of allowed, because it's the bullet doing the actual damage to the target. I just like the idea of things catching fire after I shoot them.

Has to be fired from what's classified as a "firearm", so less than 20 mm calibre.

Can you give us any idea of the actual armor on the vehicle? Are we talking about something like an LAV-25 with High Hardness Steel? Or something like a Ford Explorer with B6 level armoring?

I would look at an explosives trap:

Bury a quantity of explosives underneath the planned route. Detonate as the target drives over them.

Your calculations are:

What force would you need to lift the vehicle with so that it would crush itself on landing?
What distribution of front vs back axle force would be needed to create a smooth arc, ensuring the vehicle lands on its roof?
How far will the vehicle travel whilst airborne, and from what distance will the trajectory be noticeable, anticipating a standard suburban distribution of buildings?

How long will the road be closed for, due to the appearance of an unscheduled pothole?

Pour gas all over a section of the route they are traveling on. When they reach it ricochet an incendiary round into the gas tank, and pick off the ones that will try to flee from the burning vehicle/road.

20mm AP round will do the trick. You can carry the gun and shoot way more than 200m. Been done by the CIA.

Might want to use this weapon!
Victoria's signature weapon is the Hellsing ARMS Anti-Midian Cannon 'Harkonnen'. Weighing 120 lb. (~60 kg) unloaded, this 30 mm, single-shot, break action, breech loader cannon uses various types of shells, including depleted uranium with silver for piercing armored targets and incendiary napalm rounds for destroying large groups of opponents both on land and in the air. Only a vampire could carry and use this weapon. Her immense strength also allows her to use the Harkonnen while moving; sometimes, especially in the manga, she wields it with an extraordinary ease, even firing over her shoulder. Before gaining the Harkonnen, Seras used a smaller rifle, firing 13.7 mm rounds, as is seen written on the gun in the OVA. In the manga this gun is unnamed but the letters BAERLKS are spelled out on its side; in the OVA, however, the gun has Harkonnen written in the same place

No real person could use that weapon, therefore it's disqualified.

Honestly? If ballistics calculations are more than a very minor component of your assassination plan, you probably don't have a very good plan. Just sayin'.

Given that this is the assignment, then you're kinda stuck with projecting stuff at the target (which I assume is the point of the exercise). Does the assignment include things like numbers of guards? Other vehicles that will assist? Must the kill be immediate, or can you take out the tires and then pick off the occupants (or pick them off when they attempt to leave the vehicle)?

Since the basic methods will probably be used to death, you might try going for something somewhat unique. Maybe calculate the size of giant rock you'd need to smash the vehicle in one hit, then calculate the force, trajectory, angle, etc that you'd need to use to catapult said rock in order to destroy the vehicle. For bonus points, calculate the size/weight of the catapult and materials you'd need to construct it with in order to do this. You know, just to be different and fun. For even more fun, write the whole thing as though you are Wile E. Coyote drawing up his latest plan to take out the dastardly Roadrunner, complete with order request sent to the ACME corporation for the materials.

The easy solution is to stop the car so it isn't moving. Simply bury a oh, I dunno, 40 tesla electromagnet (give or take 5) under the road, and wait for the car to drive by at speed. It will effectivly come to a near instantanous stop abruptly, likely causing roof to collapse and pin your intended victem. So now what you do is you build this really large trebuchet, and fling a ceramic knife wielding wombat at the now stationary car, accounting for elevation, wind resistance and velocity of course. The wombat hits the car, tears through the roof with superwombat strencth, chops the bad guy into tiny little pieces, then walks off into the sunset. You then reverse the polarity of the magnet, expelling the now magnitized carcas of the car off to the side of the road, disposing of the evidence.

I can tell you that it takes a Level 10 Bullet Resistant Glass to stop a round from a military grade Barrett M82 using AP rounds.

I don't know what the **** "Level 10" means, but I know it's big, thick, heavy, and fun as **** to shoot at.

Level 10 will stop a single hit from a Barret .50 model 33 at that one point. The glass itself will likely take multiple hits overall, but it is not rated to take two .50 shells in the same spot.

Source sound. Rails have contacting parts, coils don't. they also tend to arc plasma. you can also put noise reduction systems on a coilgun. Still hard to get one strong enough and small enough.

Here is a small, non-military grade handheld one.

Nameless target. Basically there's some sort of legal issue with using real people as the subject of an assignment like this.
