I just got back into the game a few weeks ago and dusted off my old beastmaster. I'm loving most of the new changes, but I seem to constantly be pulling hate off of my pets while soloing. I have a dancer sub so it hasn't been serious yet, but I'm thinking I'm donig something wrong. I always have them attack the target first and wait a few seconds before engaging myself but I still get the mobs attention after a little while. I do have a good bit of strength gear on, but I was still having this problem with a very underleveled axe. Should I not even bother engaging till the mob is half dead or just invest in alot of evasion gear?
Edit: I should also mention I'm still only 43 and I try to use beast advantages when I can.

More than beast correlation effects,pet level and prey level will matter a lot.
What level mobs are you fighting and what level pets are you using?
Those are good things to check, but otherwise you just need to find the balance of riding that line of hate.
I leveled mostly BST/DNC but back then /DNC did not have dual wield.
You might WS wait 3 or 4 attack rounds before you engage.
If you are fighting mobs q few levels lower than yourself you may find jug pets to work out well.
Pets do relatively greater damage for fighting lower level prey. Whereas if you are level 43 and you pets are level 40 or less, I would be very surprised if you could keep hate on pet.

Don't worry too much about it. It's only an issue until you get Snarl. It's one of those JA's that completey changes the way you play your job.
snarl doesn't work with charmed pets.

And the lower your level, the harder it is for your pet to hold hate.

at 43, it happens. turn around and let it get hate back. if you have some eva gear lying around or have fairly decent gil supply, do an eva build. i used to think eva sucks but we were fighting T's and VT's maybe. nowdays, youre fighting EM's and DC's which are much easier to evade. best advice is to turn around and let it do most of the work. OR get a jug pet, and slay EP's. not glamorous but works.

your pet will do more damage then you when you are fighting easy prey. This is especially noticeable when using sic/ready.
