BSTs are normies now - good or bad thing?Follow

On the surface, it would seem that the arrival of Abyssea and Atma and new jugs has transformed the life of BST into something much better than it ever was before.

But is this really the case?

In the old days there were 15 jobs. Yet I always felt there weren't really. I always felt there were 14 jobs and BST.

BST was something special and set apart from the rest. The BST community was unique and tight-knit and of course the legend of 'BST SUXX' was born.

This isn't about nostalgia really - although there may be a bit of that.

This is more about how BST was something different then than a bog standard DD with a pet which arguably is what it is today.

If Abyssea brought party acceptance and powerful pets for BST it also ripped the heart out of what BST stands for - which is to charm.

We all love to talk about how modern FFXI (and Abyssea especially) produces players who don't know how to do their job but with BST that really is the case.

The concept of converting for example is totally alien to most modern BSTs. In fact most things to do with charm are.

They know only to join low level GOVs with jug pets then mid level GOVs with jug pets then Abyssea with jug pets - and why not? The EXP is excellent, they level quickly. So is it really a bad thing?

To me it is in a way.

I realise of course that BST has changed because the game has changed. No longer is 4k an hour soloing acceptable to most people. I get that.

But still - BST to me today feels like just another DD now. When I first started this game my main on my taru was DRG and everyone said that wasn't a pet job - just a DD job with a pet that assists. I can't help feeling like that in parties with BST now.

Here comes the nostalgia bit. I liked the old days, I liked the massive trains as you ran for the zone. I liked the thrill of charm wearing off and having to stay calm and not panic and deal with it. I liked the unique feel of the job.

I realise that you could try and recreate that today but it would be kind of false to do so.

I think the point I'm making is that sadly, BST does not suxx anymore. BST are normies now, just like everyone else. They have been accepted. Just like so many BST wanted for so long.

For those people who regret the changes in BST, I guess it's true what they say - the second worst thing in the world is not getting what you want...

RIP Charm.

That's pretty much it. But hey, at least we have almost average DD capability using overpriced/underwhelming jug pets. Also the prestige that comes with being everyone's dynamis farming job and the new new go to job for RMT.

Oh fond memories, but seriously, the Bst and everyone else is a myth. There were numerous other eras

The Bst, Blm and everyone else era. (Blm had to solo to level because people would not SC and Magic Burst)

The early TOA era - Dual Wielders, Brd & Rdm Era)

The TOA end era - Two Hand piercing weapon with 2xbrd and a rdm era (Sams using Polearms because of those pink exploding balls of XP called Colbri)

Now the Abyssea era - Nin+War, Whm, Blu and Blm/brd only seal parties now.

VW is just the monkey poop throwing era atm. Get as cloase to 18 different jobs and throw spells, JA, etc until procs happen. Collect your logs and repeat until the legendary body armor actually drops.

So Bst's welcome to the party. The Samuarai who used to be on the bench can thank the recent new WS for their chance to get off the bench.

Sorry i think you are remembering the old days through rose colored glasses. I remember soloing just to have some jerk off lvl 75 come by and steal my mob im killing. I remember no pty invites cause we are a sub par dmg dealer and having a pet out cost the pty exp. I remember at slow camps eatign dirt and thinking well there gos 30 minutes of exp i have to redo. sorry just my 2 cents worth.

I now like telling new ppl in our shell/game when they ask what jobs they should lvl or unlock next that if you want to see more of the game and have the most fun lvl bst, and not have to say but, you will end up old and grey with no hair because you are leveling bst but in the end it will be worth it.

Yeah u have the bandwagon full perle bsts now that at lvl 99 stil use the damn sheep but in 6 months it will be another job that everyone is lvling, kind of like sam was back in the day or pld was. If you were a nin back then good luck getting a pty.

1. yes removing charm was the worst thing ever, i used to complain alot on the offical forums but not one dev ever responded so i gave up.

2ndly @ Tepogue's quote I disagree i got my old 75 blm char to 75 during cop era hes a mule now.
Anyways i never once soloed blm, back in those days rng and blm were the only DD jobs anyone wanted they would spend 24 hrs+ making a pt looking for one, man ppl were retarded back then lol.

These bandwagon beasts just like for any other job will suck and not understand anything of their job. That's just what happens, it's nothing new, it's just the first time it's happened to BST.

Charm was all right and you could do some interesting things with it. But it still wasn't very useful for much of the content before. Plus we only had one decent DD jug pet. Now we have one of the best WS's in the game, jug pets that are very strong with very useful debuffs, lots of good choices for jug pets depending on situation.

I like what we can do on BST now days much more than the old days.

Getting a bst to 99 and purchasing pink gear does not make someone a bst. A true bst with Atma of the Ducal Guard can solo a lot of stuff in abyssea. Most won't take the time to get DG. I have been a bst for years and personally don't care if there are lot of bsts. I'm a good bst, which allows me to take full advantage of it's uses in Dynamis.

Being a good solo BST nowadays isn't about anything other than having a large sack of drinks or biscuits.

Just find an NM that doesn't have a 1 shot kill move, put your pet on it to chip away then sit back and feed it drink and biscuits until it's won.

Hardly compares to soloing Hakutaku at 75 with multiple Million Eyes.

Charm wasn't very useful??? Are you kidding me? Clearly you sucked at the job or never really played as a full charm BST because that's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Aside from really fantastic RDMs, no other jobs in the game pre 75 could solo an NM 12+ levels above them. And where RDM soloing was mostly limited to higher levels, a BST could solo insanely difficult mobs at nearly any level with charmed pets.

Why can't you charm pets in abyssea that you could otherwise charm anywhere else in the game? Because we would slaughter literally everything with almost no cost using charmed pets. Clearly charm is not useful at all.......so not useful that it would clearly break abyssea, which is why its not allowed.

No one is saying Charm was not useful, they are saying it was inadequate for FFXI content. Oh look, I can solo hard things in .................... La Vaule and ........... uhhh Despot in sky? lol

Adding the Jugs the way they did was the single best way they could integrate us into FFXI mainstream while keeping it relatively unique. And to be honest, back at 75 the most fun I've had was using HQ Tiger jug in sea soloing organs, which was a precursor to nowadays anyway.

BST also had a moment in the sun back between 80 and 95 caps in Abyssea, before it was bandwagoned for Dynamis, which we've never seen before.

I'm an old old Bst who's "done it all" or a lot of it anyway. I find this sort of redundant. Yeah, sacks of pet food and piles of jugs is the "now" but it's fairly similar to ganking Hakutaku or anything else; Just send piles of natural pets at it.

To be fair there kind of IS a difference... Not all NM camps had/has the natural pet capacity to do that. Now you carry your arsenal with you but I hope you sort of know what I mean.

Edit: Though I DO miss charm. I thought I read there was to be an update or an update already occurred where we'd have a broader range of charmable mobs... Like reintroducing Manticores or something as charmable. I'd hate to have the Abby community even more upset about BSTs "Taking over" but I'd damn sure love the ability to charm some abby mobs. It's only fair to us. It's like saying. "Whoa there warrior. You are in abby now. Leave that GA behind and take this dagger."

I don't know if I completely agree with he fairness thing. BST's role did not really change with the lack of Charming. Jugs were modified in such a way that it is possible to ride the Call Beast timers. So in a way, Abyssea preserved us, or even made us better in that we have more direct control over the situation and you don't have to worry about that random mischarm that just wipes you even when you have +82943738945 CHR. Looking at the way Abyssea has affected other jobs, we should be thankful we aren't now WAR-1

When you talk about Abyssea fairness you should look at PLD, RDM, SCH, SAM, RNG yadda yadda that literally poofed off the face of the game for a year or so.

I'm not offended that bst has become popular. Its not hard to tell when you come across a good bst vs a bad one. thats common for any player no matter the job.

Wow do I ever miss my BST - Playing 14 now and we dont have one - hoping in future we will get something like the feeling I got when I first found BST way back in 2006. I have never done all the Abyssea stuff and when I left ffxi 75 was still the cap but Charm was what set BST apart and I always felt the BST community was a 'different type of person job'. I still think it was the single most fun achievement I ever did when I solo'd my BST to 75. RIP Old BST I still miss you.

I BST. I always BST, and have since several years ago. Now I do play a bit differently then most anyone else, as I don't do Aby. None at all. I have it, got it when it first came out, but grew quickly board of facerolling alliance party set up. I don't even own one atma. I realize I miss out on the new Emp gear currently, but I may revist that one day, but it's not planned on.

New mobs in old zones provide plenty of opportunity for a BST to be a BST of old if you desire it enough. While new BST's leveling today are not "paying their dues" like those of old, I can speak from having leveled BST on a secondary character, that the experience is still very much rewarding, and in many ways more plesent. I'm thankful for the times I had pre aby, but I find nothing wrong with the leveling of today. Minus the book burning and aby alliance.

I wasn't even paying attention to it reading this forum post when 5 year old walks up and wonders why his hero mario is hitting princess peach!

Well, I returned last October after 3 1/2 years away from the game. I levelled BST because it was one job I always fancied levelling before I quit in 2008.

Not sure if that makes me a bandwagoner or not lol But I've made sure to get DG. In fact, I'm working on a pet -dmg set up, got my MKE head, aby legs +1, primal belt, working on axes right now and got some other peices to aim for.

To me it makes absolute sense to get DG.

I knew BST had become popular, but I didnt realise just how popular BST had gotten until a couple of nights ago.

I was messing around doing '/sea all' and on my server the only job that had more players online than BST was WHM, BST was the second most played job on the server at that time! My eyeballs nearly fell out.

Its a far cry from the days of old where we had to grind away solo for months on end, because nobody would have a lolbst in the party, and actually finding a BST within your level range to team up with was a rare treat.

I kind of miss the old days from a nostalgic point of view, but on the other hand I'm loving all the big boosts the job has recieved since the old days, and that always attracts new players, gotta take the rough with the smooth I suppose.

On another note, I really miss the old price of BST supplies! Pet food has more than doubled over the last few months I have been away, I have had to resort to levelling a cooking mule lol.

I check at least once a week. It has been like this for months. I remember zeta biscuits going for 4k. Last i checked 25k. Which means there is a lot of profit in bst supplies. good time to have cooking leveled.
