On the surface, it would seem that the arrival of Abyssea and Atma and new jugs has transformed the life of BST into something much better than it ever was before.
But is this really the case?
In the old days there were 15 jobs. Yet I always felt there weren't really. I always felt there were 14 jobs and BST.
BST was something special and set apart from the rest. The BST community was unique and tight-knit and of course the legend of 'BST SUXX' was born.
This isn't about nostalgia really - although there may be a bit of that.
This is more about how BST was something different then than a bog standard DD with a pet which arguably is what it is today.
If Abyssea brought party acceptance and powerful pets for BST it also ripped the heart out of what BST stands for - which is to charm.
We all love to talk about how modern FFXI (and Abyssea especially) produces players who don't know how to do their job but with BST that really is the case.
The concept of converting for example is totally alien to most modern BSTs. In fact most things to do with charm are.
They know only to join low level GOVs with jug pets then mid level GOVs with jug pets then Abyssea with jug pets - and why not? The EXP is excellent, they level quickly. So is it really a bad thing?
To me it is in a way.
I realise of course that BST has changed because the game has changed. No longer is 4k an hour soloing acceptable to most people. I get that.
But still - BST to me today feels like just another DD now. When I first started this game my main on my taru was DRG and everyone said that wasn't a pet job - just a DD job with a pet that assists. I can't help feeling like that in parties with BST now.
Here comes the nostalgia bit. I liked the old days, I liked the massive trains as you ran for the zone. I liked the thrill of charm wearing off and having to stay calm and not panic and deal with it. I liked the unique feel of the job.
I realise that you could try and recreate that today but it would be kind of false to do so.
I think the point I'm making is that sadly, BST does not suxx anymore. BST are normies now, just like everyone else. They have been accepted. Just like so many BST wanted for so long.
For those people who regret the changes in BST, I guess it's true what they say - the second worst thing in the world is not getting what you want...
