Well... I'm having a little trouble.

Right now I'm level 31 and I'm having a tough time with subjob choices. I have /whm /dnc and /nin all available.

I tried /whm for a while. Either I was playing wrong or something but it just didn't seem good. Curing myself was kind of pointless, either I would pull hate or run out of MP quickly. I spent most of my time resting. Charming mobs in the middle of a fight also got me hit 1-3 times and a miss charm was almost always death or close to it cause i'd just get beat on. And if I cured myself to keep myself alive, it would take forever for my new pet to get aggro cause of all the enmity I had built up.

I tried /dnc at 30 for a little bit. Had the same issues as whm. Couldn't attack much or i'd pull hate, and when I would go to charm mid fight, because of weapon swap I would lose all tp and if I got a failed charm I was toast. If I don't weapon swap I run into the same problems as whm with curing during a failed charm and end up having too much hate.

/nin has been going pretty well and I like it better than the other 2. The main problems I am running in to with /nin could be my camp atm. I'm in Carpenter's Landing and the flytraps and tigers both cause paralysis pretty often and it causes a lot of problems with charming and recasting utsusemi.

Maybe I am just playing wrong? Typically I will charm an EM flytrap and fight dc-t beetles, flytraps, and tigers and let my pet fight most of the time while I rest or chill then jump in towards the end and help finish it off.

Any suggestions?

Also while I'm posting this I was curious if I should go to Western Altepa Desert at 32? i've heard this is an awesome place for bst but I wonder if 32 is too low? Use spiders as pets fighting beetles and spiders right?

All help is greatly appreciated/

I didn't do carpenter's landing at those levels, so I'm not well informed on that camp. However, you DO walk the line of hate. That IS how the solo game works.

Here's a tip: Don't cure near the mob. If you need to cure, and you know you'll take hate from it, you need to run out of hate range (30'). This is the range where you character will disengage. Turn around for a hit or 2 so your pet has hate, run 30' out, cure yourself up, run back and keep hacking at the mob.

Save your tp/mp for curing till mob is dead and right before you go for a new pet. Frankly, I often did not use staff for charming when I /dnc. (I had an evil time trying to get monster signa back in the day, but I had pretty much all the other chr+ gear for my set. I learned to kite on the mischarms. And yes, this is exactly why every BST knows the taste of dirt all across Vana'diel. Pay attention to how mobs run around objects. Often they use terrrible paths, take advantage of that while you get your 12seconds back.

Altepa is great at level 32. I leveled there as bst and a bit as... something /bst, but I was working so well in Quifim from 28 up that I often stayed until level 33. (I've leveled several other jobs as /bst). At level 34 however, my favorite camp was efts in Bibiki bay. I tried the bombs in Gusgen, but the camp was just such a pain to get to and the aggro was problematic. Great exp though. You almost have Leave. The job is about to change. (it changes again at level 75+ as you no longer use charm anymore)

With the Fields of Valor update (that you can do as many pages as you want instead of being limited to one per game-day), it's often better to have EM-DC pet murder easy preys. Batallia downs might be a good choice (tiger vs. whichever lower page).

With EM-DC pet against EP, the pet will hold hate a lot better too. But there's a trick to healing yourself. If you can't see the mob on the little radar (compass), you won't get hate from curing. Or sic or heel or stay or anything else. :) They have pretty limited range that they "notice" you're doing anything.

Thank you for the helpful tips.

I realized the problem was mainly the camp. I was mainly fighting fly traps, and they pretty much sleep or paralyze every fight. So it's almost impossible to melee them.

I gave up on Carp landing now after getting slept with my pet, and my pet proceeding to sleep for a good 2 minutes or more while I went through 12 shadows and full health. So "F" that place.

I'm gonna try out Bat Downs idea. I just need about 3k more till I hit 32 and I'll prob go play in the sandbox for a while after that.

Whenever I hit a wall while I was soloing BST, changing camps usually fixed my problems. I think I did Korroloka during that stretch. A 2 houred Jelly pet would rock the house.

Worth seeing if you can hit up a duo with another BST - reduces the mid-fight recharm factor a bit.

Other than that - at that level and with native pets it really is a hate tightrope. You can do things like engaging later (I quite often only engaged with the second pet on the mob after I petswapped), you can gimp your melee gear back a bit (let's face it - a crab's not going to check you, decide you're gimpzors and kick you from party with a screenshot on Blue Gartr), and you can do things like running out of range to cure like someone described before. Also making sure you've got a running distance when you're going to petswap helps a lot as well, so your new pet gets a couple of hits in before the angry mob gets to chomping distance of you.

Carpenter's Landing I found (vague memory here) to be quite a tough spot (and I duoed to 75), it's quite a confined area so your working space is limited, and tigers seem to have superhero vision at times anyway (and hurt). It is where we went though - because it was easily accessible and no one goes there so no idiots to annoy me.

If you're really struggling it might be worth dropping back a camp and just FOVing EPs to get over a "bump" level (and there are a few on BST if you're levelling it old school as opposed to the "naked with a bunch of keys" method everyone seems to be doing now). You do develop a wide ranging repertoire of amusing ways to die on BST though.

I'd guess that using them as your pets is also part of the problem. Flytraps are known to be one of the more charm resistant mobs around. You'll probably have less problems elsewhere.

Yes obviously FoV is nice but the majority of camps 30+ don't have them.

So an update:

I hit 36 last night. Did qufim Island from 31-34 pretty successfully. Was slow but little chance of dying. At 34 I went to Bibiki Bay. I had heard a lot of good things about Bibiki Bay at 34 but I didn't find it that outstanding. It was hard to find EM pets sometimes, but the fact that there were no aggro mobs was nice. There was actually one point when I was about 1k from 35 that literally... not kidding.. every single mob in the entire area con'd as T. I was baffled especially since the Efts can con as DC-T at 34 and yet every single one popped as T. I had to squeeze out the last 1k by charming Ts and using funguar jugs.

Then I hit 35... and OH MY GOD is leave AWESOME. Holy crap it is like night and day playing Bst before leave. I really like Bst before... but after getting Leave I LOVE IT. Exp was so smooth... Charm an EM... fight with it... Mob dies... release pet... ring repeat. Was getting Chain 3-4 for 350+ Exp without Band. Was great fun.

Now I'm 36 and Gonna grind out to 37 in Bibiki Bay Still. Anyone have tips on where to go at 37? I've been following the Solo Bst guide on Wiki but not many of the camps at 37 seem that promising. Any preferences?

*EDIT*
Also I should add I have been using /Dnc with great success. I do use a weapon swap Macro and lose all My TP everytime I charm but I really haven't found it to be that big of a problem. I've found it most helpful when I am fighting alongside my pet and the mob and my pet are both under 10% Hps. If I'm not sure my pet will survive the fight, or long enough for me to release and finish the mob, I will use Waltz to pull hate and soak up a few hits. With Dnc +evasion bonus, as well as having about +10 evasion in gear It is not uncommon for the mob to swing and miss me 2-4 times. This allows my pet to do enough damage that my pet can finish it off.

Yep! /dnc on bst you can tank when you need pet to survive just a little bit longer to contribute damage. Its even better at level 40 when you get your first flourish to use for a provoke. I emergency tanked in a few party situations as well around level 50ish when I could divince waltz, floursh>>> snarl.

It was alot of fun being able to switch the hate to me or pet at will so to speak.

After bibiki, I went to yuhtunga and sea serpent's grotto. I didn't like Yhoator, goblin aggro/linking was just too problematic and slowed things down. The desert is very nice also. If you can find a duo partner its alot easier and faster. Most my favorite camps came from duo's. (Onzozo at level 47, or Ronfaure S you can start djinn hunting at this level, though I didn't love this camp).

We were duo but I think we did a LOT in Sea Serpent's Grotto at that level. Rather than follow one "guide" as such we used a lot of the now sadly departed hunting grounds anthology.

Yuhtunga jungle down at the outpost doing FoV page 3 worked great for me at these levels. Opo's can be a pain to charm sometimes, but with a good charm setup it works well. I went /dnc and didn't change weapons so I could save tp in case of a mischarm, I could still heal myself while waiting on timers. If I remember right, golbins were easily handled with an opo and made waiting for repops easy. Also, if you head down where the sahugin (sp) are you can do page 4 or 5 (can't remember) and run back for a new page. Set your HP at the outpost and your right there if you bite it.
