AF1 (or is it 2?)Follow
My main is WHM and I never got the AF for it but I am now going back to the original job I started FFXI with, WAR and I am enjoying the heck out of it. My question is about the AF for WAR. Now, I never figured out the naming scheme for AF and having taken a 4 year break, that has only gotten more confusing. AF1, AF2, AF3, AF3+2... I feel like I am in college algebra. Anywho, I was wondering if the first set of AF (the set called Fighters Whatever) is worth getting. I'm just level 47 now and I got the AF weapon already but once I hit 50 I was going to get all the rest of the AF if it's worth having. Well, I'll probably get it anyway but is it worth wearing until 75 when I can get the Perle gear and eventually the Ravagers set?
The quick answer is no AF is generally not worth it for War. The 50's see you getting access to Scorpion Harness and Hauby. Then the 70's give you dirt cheap dusk hands/feet until Perle at 78.
If this is just your 2nd job you may want to do the quests. I just quit doing af after getting my 3rd job to 75 and now that I have 9 - 90+ jobs AF is just not something I consider doing anymore.

Thank you. I thought since the Scorpion Harness was so much cheaper that might be a way to go, but I didn't know about the other pieces. I guess the best question to ask is, in this age of GoV burns and quick EXP, are the old gear guides still good til 75 (or 78 for Perle)?

Yep, but in all honesty, I didn't know how to spell it so I didn't put it in. Also, before I quit, that stuff (Scorp, Haubergoen) was millions of gil so I put it out of my mind as a posibility and never checked the price. I think I can handle 30k. Wow, that's a huge, huge drop...

"AF1", "AF2" and "AF3" used to refer to the Artifact Armor quest line. So AFX used to refer to either the quest itself or the piece of Artifact gear you received from it.
These days, AF1 (or just AF) is more likely to refer to the Artifact armor line that every job gets in the 50s (along with the Artifact weapon they get in the early 40s). AF2 likely refers to Relic gear, which is obtained in Dynamis and can be equipped in the 70s. AF3 is the Empyrean line, which can be obtained through Abyssea and can be equipped in the 80s.
The original Artifact armor sets can be upgraded to +1 versions through Limbus. That would be AF1+1 (or maybe just AF+1). Relic gear can also be upgraded to +1, and now +2 versions (AF2+1/2). Empyrean can be upgraded to +1 and +2 versions (AF3+1/2).
I prefer to type a few extra letters for nomenclature that's easier to identify when reading, such as Relic +1/+2 or Empy +1/+2.

Well for the record, I skipped AF1 and got high enough to wear the Perle set so i have that on. Now I need to research back pieces, rings, earrings etc, and what to macro in for whatever situations call for.
