Hey all,
I haven't unlocked Scholar yet (31 BLM highest job so don't know how soloable the quest is, but doesn't look terrible). I'm just wondering what subs I should definitely have leveled, I started leveling NIN for BLM soloing (only 10 now and still not enough norg fame for Ichi) but it seems like RDM is almost definitely needed as well. I have WHM somewhat leveled (20) and will get that to 37 after I get either RDM or NIN to the same level.
I guess I'm just wondering more than one thing, is it necessary to have /NIN for scholar in your opinion or should I just focus on leveling the main mage jobs first and then backtrack to /NIN as it poses more uses? And should I definitely have /RDM leveled.

I would say that /rdm is deffinitely a must. This is only because of the pure all around usefulness of the sub. Not only does it have buffing spells for light arts ( stoneskin, blink, enspells ) but when you switch to dark arts you also have a MAB trait.
/blm and /whm are both very good but imo /rdm will win out based on having to change to meet the current situation. If you will only be nuking ever at an event, feel free to /blm.
I dont see /nin as necessary for sch main unless you plan on soloing or doing events. Even then sch will have access to sleep from a sub /addendum point of view.
During campaign, events, exp I usually strictly /rdm and I have the ability to nuke enfeeb or heal and buff. I hope thats helpful.

Great, that actually does help tremendously, makes me want to switch my efforts from leveling NIN to RDM for the time being. Thanks again.

I would, at bear minimum, get RDM to 37 (this is obvious), but I would strongly recommend getting WHM to 33 for Stoneskin-ga at SCH 56. BLM to 17 is pretty much standard procedure for Warp.
SCH/BLM to lvl 37 is fine, but from then on SCH/WHM for Blink-ga and other benefits will far out way your "Ghetto" BLM or WHM status.
SCH/BLM at 75 is pretty useless (i.e very situational) as you have no defense mechanisms (Cover FTW? ...)
Party leaders, generally WILL demand (this if from experience) you to go /WHM for Stoneskin-ga until you get it from /RDM at 68. (Yes, you get Enthunder-ga way before that but sadly the safety of SS-ga outweighs this ; ; )
Yeah, it sucks, but the benefits to the party (esp if you fight Puks) are so great that you may see invites tail wa-aay off if you dont have whm to 33.

I rarely ever leave the MH as SCH without /RDM. Even if I am running somewhere random just to warp back. After playing SCH/RDM, using a different sub feels too much like a different job imho. You lose so much utility, and can't rest with Sublimation active.
Most of my time raising SCH I was requested to main heal. My /sub progression went 1-56/BLM, 56-68/WHM, and 68-75/RDM. Addendums/Sublimation didn't come out till I was mid-60s, so I don't know if that would have influenced me differently. I do know that Sublimation had a huge impact on sub choice just for Stoneskin.
[Side Note] I was kicked out of a party in Garliage while leveling for not /WHM because I wouldn't have any cure spells. >.>

I used /BLM a lot from 20-40 for Magic Attack Bonus I. That's MAB+20 for those levels. At 40 RDM gets it, and I see almost 0 benefit for /BLM after that.
From 40-75 I did 95% /RDM. There was an odd party in the middle where I /WHM'd for the stoneskin, but generally I didn't find it necessary.
I solo'd about half of my xp, and I think the fast cast, magic attack and Gravity far out weigh the defense of stoneskin in that situation.
Once you get Stoneskin from /RDM, there's not much reason left to sub anything else(In my opinion)

I can only think of one thing to add. If you level /nin to 12 and get utsu now then it's always available for solo/duo while you are doing the xp grind. It's by no means necessary but is nice to have. If you get your sch to or very near 75 before getting nin to 12 then realy don't bother with it. You won't need /nin endgame.
