The only thread on DNC tanking on here is fairly old, I'm looking for a little information since new merits, gear etc. Some basics questions I have are:

1) How to prioritize gear? I'd assume Acc and Haste towards the top, follow by Evasion, and then what?

2) Which sub: Ninja or Warrior? Shadows with our natural evasion seem appropriate, but how well can we maintain hate at 75 with only Steps and Waltzes? Can we do without Provoke? Animated Flourish seems a waste of Finishing Moves that we want to save for Reverse Flourish.

My DNC is still too low to test this stuff, but my friends and ls have agreed to let me mess around as DNC tank when I get up there, and I'm looking for some more information along the way.

At 75, sub /NIN and use a cure cheat macro to let you heal yourself even when you're not hurt. As long as you can keep the tp coming in, you can build considerable hate with cures alone (which is mostly how a PLD/NIN does it).

Evasion is circumstantially useful depending on a mob's accuracy. Generally, if a mob is tough enough that it needs a tank, it's going to be too tough for evasion to bring its hit rate meaningfully below 95% unless you devote your entire gearset to evasion, which would leave you without the ACC and haste necessary to keep tp flowing. As such, evasion gear is extremely circumstantial.

Yeah I know Waltzes can generate a ton of Enmity, especially if I wear +enmity gear. As /NIN, would I be able to use Reverse Flourish 100% of the time, or will I need to occasionally Animated Flourish?

This post covers what gear and merits that I use for DNC tank :

I find myself using Animated Flourish very rarely ... it's basically a judgment call. If you feel that the next BLM nuke or the next WS one of the melee does is going to take the mob off of you, use it. In my post above I go over the different hate tools a Dancer tank has at their disposal, so check that out if you're interested.

How to "tank" in an xp party on the way to 75? Grab a RDM and 4 DD tell the RDM to haste/dia with backup cures while you spam the sh*t out of your own on the melee that are going nuts.

This also works at 75 but good luck getting a party to party without a BRD. I did it and was able to pull an infini-chain meripo easily with just myself and a RDM as backup.

"Infini-chain" isn't exactly a measure of EXPing success, since people can duo infinite chains, and a perpetual chain with 6 can still make a fair bit less EXP than a successful party might aim for.

Also, why not just replace the RDM with a BRD at 75 if everyone wants a BRD? You really shouldn't need a backup healer against many merit mobs, and even if you did a BLU or PLD (or DRG, or another DNC, or whatever) would do just as well.

Haste, Dia2/3.

I can't pull a BRD out of my ass for meripo while RDM are more common. Preemptive strike on COR: they're just as rare as BRD.

Have the RDM melee while casting Dia and haste.

Duo infini-chain sounds gravy to me. How do I do it?
