That folks is exactly how our jacked up politics work, they label these events as "It was the Video Games" or "It has to be the Movies/Music!". Now has anyone ever thought to question that is parents were watching there children and being "parents" this would be reduced if not happen at all.
WARNING: Rant ahead. This paragraph stuck out as something that always bothered me about politics in general. Politicians get elected by playing up to the desires of the sheep -- erm... I mean, public. And what is the biggest desire the public has, generally speaking?
People like to be in positions where they won't necessarily have to be held accountable or take responsibility for negative things.
This statement holds true in different ways: people wish for wealth because the responsibilities inflicted upon them by things like debt tend to go away when all the debt is paid off; adulterers try to find the best way to satisfy their extramarital desires without getting caught; underachievers try to find any possible reason to shuttle the blame for their own failures onto other things.
I agree with you wholeheartedly, based on the paragraph quoted.
Wouldn't anyone be happier as a parent if someone in a position of power told them: "It's not
your fault that Little Timmy shot someone in the face. Blame what he watches on TV;
you shouldn't be expected to keep an eye on him and be a parent."
That's the gag, in a nutshell. As long as the parents are given an out, they will take it. Remember the news stories about parents who were up in arms because of the possibility of being criminally liable for their children's transgressions? I'll bet you if they subscribed to the mindset of taking control of their children's environment (sit with your kids while they watch TV, while they browse the internet, etc.), there'd be no need for such drastic measures, and game designers can go back to doing what they do best... eating pizza (or designing games, I can't remember which).
I invite you to join me as I offer the lead in a collective shout of "What crap."
