I can't wait for the first news story to come out where a kid shot his brother in the face with a Glock because they were playing FFXI and he was trying to use magic bullets to buff his brother lol. Now child shootings are not funny, but come on you know some dumb $#!+ like this is gonna happen! Just a random thought.

Agreed.

This game isn't supposed to be played by kids under 13, but apparently it is, and also is by people who remain at that age mentally. So who knows?

But sadly he has a point. Some activist or politician will take a scenario like this and use it as a boosting agent for money or election respectively. Then FFXI will be either taken off the shelf (which is very unlikely) or slapped with the infamous NC-17 label.

To quote Don King: "Only in America".

When will parents except the fact they MIGHT have to explain to their kids who play video games that there is a difference between fantasy and reality. And if this is the case, then maybe your children should not be playing video games.

I have been playing video games since Sega Master System (go go Alex Kid in Miracle World and the original Shinobi). I never once wanted to chuck ninja stars at my little brother but there was this one time when... Oh wait... That would be detrimental to my argument.

Sorry, this kinda crap upsets me when they try to blame video games and movies for tragedies that happen. I am done with my minirant on the subject.

All in all, it is just a game. Hopefully, this situation never happens but if it does, maybe the politicians and activists should lobby for parenting classes during pregnancy instead of taking games off the shelves. Makes more sense to me. =P

I am addicted to games like no one else could think but I never once thought of doing a fatality or jumping on someones head to get points...Even GTA didn't make me once think I should go jack some cars and shoot some hookers. The kids that do that kind of thing are wrong in the head to start with and would have done it as an adult anyways. I am all for rating systems because I saw way too much violence in my younger years but this game doesn't even have blood! If they put anything over a teen rating on this, they are crazy.

if someone shoots their brother with a glock, it would be because of GTA,Halo 2, or any other one of those ridiculously gorey shooters

Ask a phsyciatrist if FFXI online is for you

Are you in the military or medicine, or are you just a goth? Anyway, I don't see any reason why someone shouldn't be able to laugh at whatever they want.
In any case, it would suck if that actually happened, though I think prosecutors would have a harder time blaming SE than in other cases. Is there any concrete evidence that guns will be used for buffs though, or is that a guess? I haven't seen it anywhere.

I am familiarized with death also, family member, and my very dear orange cat :(, but stuff happens. I too, think death should not be funny, but just sometimes... just sometimes... I can't help myself, espacially if it's in a comedy movie.

"To Live is to Die"

If by that you mean that all who live are inevitably destined to die, then duh.
If that's not the case, then you haven't made yourself very clear.
Regardless, people sometimes attach an unwarranted mysticism to death. It's not some obscure entity for one to revere or fear (though there is reason to avoid it, don't get me wrong), but rather a simple and easily explainable natural process, the ceasing of the body's life functions. At least that's the way I see it.

Good point about swords though Paperbaghobo, though I don't think anyone that crazy or gullible would have lasted only enough to even get to FFXI. People like that can be influenced by anything. I seem to recall a story about a boy's severe injury (he survived though) after jumping off a deck or balcony. His words, after his recovery, "I was pretending to be a pokemon, so I could fly like one".

Look at that, I get rated down for telling people to be parents instead of blaming everyone else for their uncaring attitude towards their kids. Face it, children who have actual parents instead of morons don't do stupid sh*t like that. Well good job moron, you rated me down on a public forum that has no actual bearing on life.

Congradulations, you win no prize, you have learned nothing, and most likely your child will be the next Jeffrey Dahmer.

That folks is exactly how our jacked up politics work, they label these events as "It was the Video Games" or "It has to be the Movies/Music!". Now has anyone ever thought to question that is parents were watching there children and being "parents" this would be reduced if not happen at all.

Now Yes I do agree there are some sick puppies out there however, how many of those people are a result to either lack of "Parental Guidence" or "Parental Abuse"? I am sorry for this rant however this topic is by far the one which really burns my political butt, as you know darn well that a majority of those same poloticians drop there kids off and don't care what they do. Yes I am grouping poloticians and I realize this is the same thing they do however, if this "Grouping" is ok for them to judge the majority of children then the same appiles to there parenting skills.

Sorry to post my opinion's and if you don't agree that is fine, however I think most will agree that most of what I said is true. If the parents were watching that kid he wouldn't have that Glock now would he?

WARNING: Rant ahead. This paragraph stuck out as something that always bothered me about politics in general. Politicians get elected by playing up to the desires of the sheep -- erm... I mean, public. And what is the biggest desire the public has, generally speaking?

People like to be in positions where they won't necessarily have to be held accountable or take responsibility for negative things.

This statement holds true in different ways: people wish for wealth because the responsibilities inflicted upon them by things like debt tend to go away when all the debt is paid off; adulterers try to find the best way to satisfy their extramarital desires without getting caught; underachievers try to find any possible reason to shuttle the blame for their own failures onto other things.

I agree with you wholeheartedly, based on the paragraph quoted.

Wouldn't anyone be happier as a parent if someone in a position of power told them: "It's not your fault that Little Timmy shot someone in the face. Blame what he watches on TV; you shouldn't be expected to keep an eye on him and be a parent."

That's the gag, in a nutshell. As long as the parents are given an out, they will take it. Remember the news stories about parents who were up in arms because of the possibility of being criminally liable for their children's transgressions? I'll bet you if they subscribed to the mindset of taking control of their children's environment (sit with your kids while they watch TV, while they browse the internet, etc.), there'd be no need for such drastic measures, and game designers can go back to doing what they do best... eating pizza (or designing games, I can't remember which).

I invite you to join me as I offer the lead in a collective shout of "What crap."

I blame the video games. It taught me that I can keel animals and steal without penalty.

I was just playing Brenner! They had my Flamme!

Seriously, video games are entertainment. Death has been taught to us to be funny by our society. We are taught to laugh at it.
Especially if it is caused by someone being stupid.

Banning the media because some people die and blame it is like banning dancing cause some idiot was dancing because he was watching music videos and bumps another person into a street where they proceed to be hit by a bus.

I would laugh if that happened, by the way.

reminds me of something i heard about D&D: Apparently, back when it came out, some people would act out the battles with real swords, bows, great axes, and what have you. a bunch of people died.

Another one was a newspaper article about two Star Wars fans trying to make real lightsabers using test tubes and lighter fluid. the tubes exploded, giving the victims puncture wounds along with thrid degree burns

so yea I agree with Madvillany, sh*t like this is @#%^ing funny!

Ok joking aside I agree with you however, from many cases of the past how many politicians are ever true to there word. Yes That is getting off topic but just something to keep in mind.

This somewhat bugged me but sadly it's so true, more so in the newer generation parents. I think the younger generation parents (not all mind you as some make wonderful parents) are just in that "If I won't get in trouble I don't care" state of mind, or as you put it "given an out". Why is it that parents have that convenient out while politicians are fueling there own agenda with "Hostile Media" to make it look like they care about what happens.

I think you explained what I was trying to say a little better then I could. I know when I was growing up parents raised there kids to know the difference between a controller and a AK47. Yes most designers just eat pizza and drink Mountain Dew (I personally use to like Josta better when making a game).

Death is funny as long as it doesn't happen close to you. Although it all depends on how you die or someone else dies. Such as if a clown ran up a wall to try and do a back flip while some kid threw a stick at him and he ended upside down with a broken neck, I would laugh my ass off. Also death can be fun as hell too. Such as I plan that when I am about 65 I'll be jumping butt naked out of an airplane and onto the space needle in Seattle. Free falling to my doom would be so freakin fun. BTW I join the Army at the end of the summer heh so wish me luck lol.

First and foremost, Rant below.
I'm going to be very cruel, any child stupid enough to shoot himself or anyone else with a gun deserves to either die or face the punishment for what he's done to someone else. Blaming video games is the easy way out, and people don't consider just what kinds of things their children will do to imitate, or act upon things they see others, or video game characters do. Trying to sue or blame SE is impossible, they are already covered in this matter, for one it would be the parents who would have to let the child play the game in the first place. Because no child of that mentallity would be able to play the game to get far enough to get corsair. maybe watching mommy or daddy play the game could play a role in what may occur, however parents' should already be aware of the things that children do. After all weren't you a child at one point? You should remember trying to imitate things of this nature and should be prepared already when you have children. (another thing is, that SE allows you to password protect your account, and a parent would most likely do that. Maybe not for the reasons stated above, but to prevent a child from messing up or messing with their character.)
Second of all death is not something to be feared, embrace the fact that you may die one day and accept it as being a fact of life, because you're not going to escape it no matter how immortal you think you may be. (Thats the best way to get through life because being scared of death your whole life will only make it more difficult to move along.) Personally i find death to be hilarious and funny, i laugh everytime i see violent nature because it amuses me personally. People being cruel and evil to each other deserve what they get, thats all there is to it. You wanna be mean, expect to get it back cause eventually someone's gonna push back.
On a more humourous note, you'd have to think how funny it would be to see a child run up to mommy or daddy and say; "Mommy, I tried to buff my friend Bob in time but the monster killed him too quick. Can you raise?" :P
Please understand i'm not cruel hearted i just accept the facts, Humans are violent creatures and its just in their nature to destroy and cause chaos. It's an inescapable destiny. Even with your purest intentions, eventually even the nice ones snap.
Sorry for the rant.

Don't know about the rest of you but a gun is much more easily obtained where I live/grew up than a sword. However, I haven't heard of any knife stabbings due to FFXI either so I guess the point is more or less how you view it.

What's sad is whether it happens or not, there are parents who wouldn't have the slightest clue if their kids were/are capable of such an act. I remember when my parents basically ran background checks on every where I was going and who I was going with. Sure at the time I hated it, but being older and about to be a parent I completely understand.

Seriously, think about it. Almost all of us (guys), played a form of war with our friends when we were little. And there was always the cool kid with the cool toys that did more than everyone elses. Normally, it was a plastic gun that actually shot something and not just the "Bang, Bang" noises the rest of us had to make. I'm betting it wouldn't take too much of a stretch for a politician now-days to attribute that to a) that child wanting to own a real gun b) that child being a threat to society because of a violent nature of wanting to kill. The list could go on and on. And what is really sad, they'd probably be able to get a law passed to take said plastic gun off the shelves.

I miss growing up in the 80s and early 90s (WOW, that is something that I never thought I would say).

Wow this conversation went from talking about kids getting shot in the face to emos cutting them selves with spoons then to quagmire and peter griffon laughing in the face of death and i can actually see that happen because ppl are like if i get in a police chase with the cops and get caught i will get out in about 10 seconds.

You're retarded... go shoot yourself. By the way Corsair doesn't have an E at the end... just like Favorite, Armor, and Color don't have U's.. welcome to America.

Edit: lol.. wow kid.. typing online grammar is really traditional grammar.. what are u in middle school? I'm just trying to explain the difference between French and English. Could tell he's in America.. because either a Canadian or an American types English like that.

When we finish a sentence, we put a period at the end. Welcome to English 101. Spelling mistakes happen. Your parents should know a thing or two about mistakes.

lol favourite, colour do have u's in them, welcome to english as its writen by the rest of the world...and sentences do acutally end in periods. Sorry couldn't resist jumping on this one.

To the OP topic, sucks, people first blamed music for warping kids, then blamed TV, now blame video games...next blame...Christianity? Islam? I am sure these have been blamed at one time or another as well but thought i would toss them in the mix, simply cauz most of the current conflicts (fancy name for war) happen to involve differences of opinions or interpretations of relgious doctorine...anywho...i agree the parents should be held accountable for the kid blowing the face off his brother...if the kid was that dumb, then there are some serious parental screwups there for not indicating/medicating their kid into knowing the difference between FANTASY@DREAMS and the real world where people are not raised back in to existance...as well shouldn't those things be locked up? Or did this happen in a country where there are almost as many guns as there are people? where its easier (and legal) to buy a gun before you can buy a beer? where...i could go on but...like most of this paragraph its moderatly pointless.

Sorry about bring something old up but....

I'll bet if they subscribed to the mindset of taking control of your children's enviroment (sit while your kids watch TV, while they browse the internet, etc.)

I beleave to somepoint this is ok. But browseing the internet part is a bit too much. I respect the parents power over there children, but I also respect the right to keep somthing to yourself. Like, if a 12 year old was playing FFXI, and his mother saw someone type the f word in LS or PT chat, then take away their children's right to play, that would suck. Now if HE said it or he was watching porn or somthing, then OK.

Hey kids, guess what? If you get an AK47 +1, you can cast Haste on your friends. I rest my case

Many kids are seeing unapropriate things in their childhood. For example, a kid called me an ass (believe me, he did not get a dictionary and think he was callin me a donkey.) Another one made sexual jokes and said a gym teacher in middle school was gay. I saw a cowboy bebop once and saw some kids staring at p**n. That episode made me think about this, todays youth are getting to be obnoxious delinquents. I still say games are not the cause for children shooting people but it is making them swear, and talk about adult things they dont understand. In other words, games are the cause of more minor things compared to what the government is saying [red]GTA does
