I recently hit level 99 with my SMN and now working on getting the remaining 4 avatars (Alex, Odin, Fenrir, Diabolos) and AF/RELIC gear.

If someone could, please post what the ideal* endgame gear would be. I've heard different opinions from many different people. I'm not sure what exactly to work towards because i keep getting pulled in all different directions with it.

*Also side note, what is the Pitchfork Trick to get the whispers for Fenrir? Can i solo all the avatars now at level 99 in order to get the Whispers for Fenrir?

Best,
Tim

Here are a few of my main item sets that I use, for reference. They're pretty close to what I'd consider ideal, with exceptions listed at the bottom of the post.

Perpetuation down: http://www.ffxiah.com/item-sets/94444
(Rugged Mantle is from Moogle Add-on, has Pet:Attack+2. Ruby Earring is from ACP7, has Pet:Attack+5)
Edit: Note that I'm using relic+2 body here, but empy+2 is almost as good. However, if you don't need the extra -1 perp from empy, then the relic gives an extra 6% crit rate to the avatar's melee attacks.

Physical BP set: http://www.ffxiah.com/item-sets/94450

Magical BP set: http://www.ffxiah.com/item-sets/124548
(Diamond Earring is from ACP7 and has Pet:MAB+2)

Summoning Skill set: http://www.ffxiah.com/item-sets/255753

As far as things that I'd change if I could, there are really only four items: Nirvana (mythic staff), two items from Legion which are Esper Earring & Ngen Seraweels, and Shedir Crackows from Arch-Ultima. Aside from those four items, I consider my equipment to be ideal. Hope I'm not forgetting anything...

For strict Summoning Magic skill there's the Aptus Earring with skill augments, Anhur Robe (has +2 over Caller's Doublet +2), and a Kirin's Pole with Byakko's Scrap augments for up to +12 skill. That last one is pretty much the most unlikely one to get, since you can't have two staves and if you've already got an Enhancing skill one you'd likely want to keep that.

I currently use the Chatoyant staff full time which is my only staff as of now.

Mainly trying to get free avatars + refresh if possible. I feel SMN is worthless without ATLEAST free avatars due to the amount of MP it takes to keep them out (Currently at 10mp/tick)

Ah, yeah forgot about a couple of summoning skill items, thanks Vlorsutes. I'd always ignored those items but they'll become more important with the Perfect Defense nerf that's coming down the pipeline which will make its duration based on summoning skill.

As a side note... Veiled Ironclad SUCKS. Such a hater. 0/60 or so on Esper Earring. Never even seen one drop. I've seen Ngen Seraweels but not Esper Earring.

Perg, why not use the Summoner's Horn +2 in place of Caller's Horn +2 for magical pacts?

Because I prefer the small chance of a set bonus over the miniscule MAB boost. The math argues in favor of the set bonus if you gain 3% activation from the Caller's Horn +2 and have as much Pet:MAB from other sources as I do, but I'm not sure if you only gain 2%. I believe since I swapped out Caller's Bracers for Auspex Gages, I'm probably only gaining 2% set activation from the Caller's Horn... so maybe I should revisit that math and see if it's still better...

In any event, it's pretty much a toss-up. Both will be roughly equal in the long run, I believe. I pretty much never use magic pacts anymore anyway except in very specific circumstances.

To the op, look into magian staves! Those are fantastic to save on perpetuation. Other than that, af3 body and feet will help you the most with bringng mp cost down. And, in case you have not done it yet, level rdm to use as a sub, the refresh cuts down another 3mp/tick.

If you need more tips on how to get the things i mentioned, feel free to ask!

Can you please tell me the difference between the AF gears and Relic? I believe Relic is Caller's gear? I hate how there are so many acronymns >.<

Af 1 = artifact armor, which is "Evoker's" for summoners, aquired early on between level 50 and 60. Don't bother with it, since it is not really needed. Starting level 50, it would be better to get the Austere set from the auction house.

Af2 = relic armour(level 70-75), aquired in dynamis zones, called "Summoner's". Those pieces are very nice and can be further upgraded to +1/+2 versions.

Af3 = abyssea armour(level 80-90), aquired in abyssea zones, called "Caller's". You want all 5 pieces asap, and i was referring to body and feet earlier regarding perpetuation.

For a new player the different set names are confusing at first, but dont worry, you will know it all eventually! Hope this helps a bit, and dont stop asking questions if you have some.

Here's my max skill set: http://www.ffxiah.com/members/item-sets?id=236715

Didn't know about the Aptus Earring augment, so thanks Vlor. I was fine with my Enhancing +12 Kirin's Pole and Soulscourge for SMN, but with the incoming Embrava nerf and increase to PD duration based on summoning skill, I will probably go for a summoning +12 Kirin's Pole. With full summoning magic merits, capped skill and gear, that would put me at 539 skill. I think that's the max possible skill at this time, but feel free to correct me. I'm all for more +skill.

I've heard that the summoning magian staves are not worth it. I disagree. While the -BP is nice, there are enough other options to reduce BP delay that it is not that big a deal. What I really enjoy is the -perp. With Chatoyant Staff + idle gear, I get back 1-2 MP/tick (sorry I can't remember exactly atm; it's 3AM, I couldn't sleep, and I just got Moonshade Earring w/ Refresh recently). With magian staves, I'm getting back 4-5 MP/tick. The difference in MP drain is noticeable enough to make the inventory +3 worth it for me. I did Garuda, Shiva and Ramuh staves as those are my most frequently used avatars.

Mosel, thank you for this information. That clarifies things so much!

Also i believe i should be able to solo the Prime fights to get Fenrir at 99. I solo'd the Shadow lord in 3minutes, im assuming that the Prime fights will be equally as easy. This will be my project for this weekend.

Thanks again guys,

Question for Perg:

Is your idle set what your avatars tp in? And if so, why idle in Caller's Bracers +2 instead of Summoner's Bracers +2?

Thanks in advance for the reply.
-TA

edit: I'm assuming your "Perp down" set is what you're idling/tping in, and I understand why you would want Caller's on the specific day for which avatar you have out.

Correct that the idle set is what my avatars TP in. No particular reason I use Caller's Bracers over Summoner's. They both enhance avatar accuracy, and nobody knows by how much. I took a random guess that if one of them gives more bonus it's probably Caller's. (I kinda suspect that's what you were fishing for is if anyone knows which accuracy bonus is better, but I'm afraid I haven't seen any such testing.)

I don't wear it for the perp bonus on day, my avatar is free without that. I don't like relying on day/weather bonuses. :)

That makes perfect sense, and I admit that I share your theory/question about the accuracy bonus.

I guess my thought was that the +15 skill on Summoner's +2 would help with the bonuses to accuracy and attack (am I correct on this?) that you get for being so far over the skill cap. I do like macroing in Caller's for the Blood Boon bonus on Blood Pacts, for whatever that's worth.

Random new question: has anyone seen testing on the Esper Earring to determine how much the damage bonus is? The more I think about it though, it seems like an "anything is better than nothing" piece for the slot as opposed to a game-breaker.

Thanks,
-TA

The +15 skill will only give you accuracy on blood pacts, skill doesn't affect regular melee accuracy.

Esper Earring is +5% damage. It's pretty nice. I believe Ngen Seraweels are also 5%.
