Can you do well as a casual DRG?Follow

I come back to this game often and almost always get burned out by hearing an seeing the same 3 things.

Drg is for procs

Subpar DD

Drg mage still has no place in parties

Has the situation improved, or gotten worse since the level 99 update? Do I need the Mythic polearm to do well? I always wanted Gungnir more :( . I doubt I ever get either because I will mostly be doing everything solo. If I want to get seals should I be leveling another job to get into parties to get said seals? Is maining any single job even possible, or are my hopes of being a DRG all for not D: ?

If the hard news is just level WAR if you want to melee DD, or level WHM/BLM if you want to be desirable, please say so, I always knew I was taking a hard path only taking DRG past 50, but its time to actualy get into parties an see some of the game this time >.>

kind of old post but no one ever replied so here goes.

DRG is just fine, get yourself a Chauve-Souris, and you'll be competitive with the heavy hitters. Takes some work, but it's well worth it.

Only bad part of Chauve-Souris(Occasionnaly Attacks Twice = OaT) is the 10x Blob items from Orange abyssite T3 VNM, rest is pretty easy to get and it ranks up there with the best weapons (Ryunohige 99,Gungnir 99,Herja's Fork).

sure, thats the bottleneck. recommend shouting in jeuno to buy orange abbyssites. Then you'll need a friend or two, including one with TH. BST is very helpful, as it is with like, everything.

Thanks for the reply's guys, so Chauve is comparable eh?

Well I'm in a pretty solid LS atm, an I have a bit of gil so that helps. Any good pieces of gear that are must haves? I recently got my brutal earring, Chemcac or w/e their called pants and a windlash belt cause I really like multi hit things ^^. I have 0 +2 's or +1's atm, and I have no idea what goals I should be going for.

Are there reasons to do WoTG or the expansions? Reading up on things almost never gives you a good answer an its really hard to find gear you don't know exists ; ;

calmecac trousers are a great piece. AF3+2 Head, Body, Feet all kind of must-haves for where you're at. Hands are WS only, and spirit link macro. Timarli Jawshan is a nice little haste body piece that you can get fairly easily from Iratham in Aby-tahrongi while you work on AF3. Ace's mufflers/boots also good interim pieces until AF3 is +2'd.

Brutal earring, must have, so you're good there.

Rajas ring if you dont already have.

WoTG is mostly worthless, but if you can manage to slog through all the 50+ missions and quests (they're actually quite fun, ive been slowly soloing my way through) the moonshade earring (with +25 TP bonus) is nice for Stardiver.

Fully merit Stardiver if you haven't yet.

For waist, Goading or Bullwhip will do more for you than windbuffet, as far as TP phase. Can use windbuffet for WS and jump macros.

It might be because you did say OAT makes you competitive with the heavy hitters, which isn't really true. It's a good polearm for DRG though, and everyone should make it.

I meant that you can go to most events and fight side-by-side with relic/emp DRK/SAM/WAR and not feel totally gimp due to your weapon choice, that's all. They will still outparse you, despite your increased WS frequency.

"Competitive" was a misleading choice of words, you are absolutely correct.

I'd like to tag on here asking more closely to the OP question, specificaly about time commitment. Right now I can dedicate one set hour per week with 30 minutes here and there. Once per month I can be online for about 3-4 hours. Is playing this casually worth it? Or it will just take that long to get something started?

While it depends on your goals and what you want to get out of this game, I think it's really difficult to get things done in such a small window unless you could coordinate with others to be online at the same time.

XP is probably your best bet because there's always something going on in Abyssea and even if there wasn't you could solo your XP.

But if your goal was to improve your gear, I think it would be troublesome. As an example, if you wanted to do seal farming, you'd probably want at least one other person. And the entire process from shouting to fighting would very likely take longer than your window of time. Something like Dynamis would be tough too because it takes 2 hours, although it does have the advantage of being a solo or very low-man event.

If you have the flexibility it may be preferable to play less frequently but for larger chunks of time. Whatever you decide to do, best of luck.

I agree. While the game is far more accessible than it used to be for the casual player who can't devote a lot of time to playing each day, I'm afraid that one hour a week is probably not enough time to really get much done. Exping you'd be able to make progress fairly well given how Abyssea works (especially if you can get into an already existing party), but as far as gearing yourself, like detlef said, you'd be hard pressed for time.
