Hello all, I m back to FFXI and i raise my new character in Lakshmi again.
Things changed a lot, no more 6 man party and rarely need to party because solo is very easily now FOV/GOV make level even easier than ever.
I like DRG (and i was working on my poor DRG/DRK @lv59 before i quit) So, I rebuild my DRG again and just pass 2.5 month and my DRG is now woop! lv 83. I mainly /RDM when solo and sometimes /PLD for party (self heal, Multi-purpose Wyvern). When i party with my brother as tank and my sister-in-law as healer, I go /DRK for higher DMG.
I know subjob change a lot and I found that for DRG, different subjobs make DRG play differently.
First of all, I am not saying that /whatever is the best and /whatever sucks. I just like to explore more on how DRG play in different style.
BTW, the following thoughts are what i feel @ lv 80ish and i don't have Myth/Relic/Emp yet.
1. /RDM
I use this to solo a lot, specially great against low dmg mob with AOE skill (before lv 75). The reason is, Spirit Link. In very early level, once my pet has enough TP (somewhere around 200) and got hurt, then i can Skewer -> SL, Penta Spam (self chain). After lv 75, i just spend my first Merit on Empathy and I go and get my Spear of Trial and work on the deadly long 300 WS point quest. Self SC does help a lot and I can always SC to others (whenever possible). I finish the Spear of Trial within 1.5 day (it was around 7-8 hours of killing Bloodsucker intensively in BO). Very impressive.
2. /PLD
I found that /PLD is not bad in GOV/FOV party because, there isn't always a healer there. /PLD is quite handy because u kill faster than /RDM and Element Breath but u also get some self healing spell and fast self target spell (Protect) to trigger HB. After lv70 (and before lv 82), Auto-Refresh (which stack with FOV/GOV support) and Drachen Armet make /PLD even better. The trade off is, if I want to self SC, I have to open the bettle with first WS (before my wyvern attack) or otherwise, it will spend all TP on it's Element Breath. What i think is, after lv 82, I will use /RDM (or /BLU) instead of /PLD.
3. /BLU
I didn't know /BLU much because i m just new returner. But when I work on the 300 WS point quest, I do research on self L2 and Lv 3 SC. Which i found, /BLU with Chain Affair (CA) can do self chain very very easily (i do envy on that ;8^P ). What i understand is:
Impulse Drive > Power Attack > Wheeling Thrust = Light
Skewer > Claw Cyclone > Impulse Drive = Dark
Please correct me if I miss something. I am thinking to get Blue and raise it to lv 49 and see how it works.
4. /DRK
One of my dream build (ar... 6 years ago), but Soul Eater is gimp on sub and the dmg I saw in later level shows that: SE does not worth anymore. The Attack Bonus II is still good, but a lot of other sub can do better. The only thing that blink my eyes is Absorb-TP. Does it work on a DRG/DRK? How often it will be resisted? What if I pump Merits to +16 on Dark Magic? Will it help? Does it worth?
I was thinking if it start the battle with a WS1 (so that no Element Breath) -> SL, WS2 -> Absorb-TP, 2 Jumps, WS3 work? Can someone give me a hint?
5. /SAM
Ah... That is what I see in my server, when the DRG is not /Mage, that is the only sub i seen. I never play as /SAM and i want to know, How /SAM work and what will be the benifit for /SAM?
6. /THF
Is there anyone still /THF other than Treasure Hunter bonus on farming? 6 years before I left, I heard that SATA is gimp as /THF, how it is now? since no more "standard" 1 Tank 2 Support 3DD (6 ppl Standard) party is no more, does Hate control still worth?
I did play DRG long time ago but when I came back again, I found myself looks like a newbie at all. Still need some time to learn the "new world" and now, there are 2 more questions:
1. Is relic weapon still very hard to get? I heard that to gain the first Gungnir(75) takes over a year even u play every day (and u need party to do it together).
2. Is it possible to Unlocking a Myth (Dragoon) solo? I heard that no one playing Nyzul Isle anymore, Does it mean it will be hard to gain Drakesbane?

1) I will often use /Rdm if I'm doing Dragoon/mage because it offers a series of very fast casting and low mp cost spells to trigger Healing Breath (besides Dia, it also offers the Bar-spells).
2) Subbing Paladin is not advisable, because while it does offer the ability to have both elemental and healing breaths for your Dragoon, because it gives the Wyvern hybrid abilities, your healing breaths are less effective. For /mage, your base HP needs to be at or below 33% its maximum to trigger Healing Breath (or 50% with the AF helmet), whereas with a hybrid wyvern, your base HP needs to be 25% or lower, or 33% or lower with the AF helmet. That means that you need to be far closer to dying to trigger HB, thus making it a less effective healer.
3) The real appeal that /Blu has is that, besides having fast casting and low mp cost spells to trigger HB, it also offers Cocoon, which is a 50% Defense boost, which easily beats any sort of Protect you could get from /Rdm, /Whm, or /Pld. Skillchaining isn't really possible because you won't be able to build up enough TP after the first weaponskill to be able to skillchain, especially since Chain Affinity will use up any remaining TP you have.
4) On anything of any real value, Absorb-TP won't work because of the significant difference between your enemy's level and the skill level you'd have. Anything that was EP or higher to you at level 90+ would outright resist Absorb-TP 95% of the time. Even with capped Dark Skill merits, you'd still not raise your magic accuracy enough to land it with any reliable rate.
5) Samurai as a sub not only cuts down on the number of melee swings you need to get enough TP to weaponskill, but also offers Meditate (even though it's only 60 TP and not 100 TP as it would with Samurai main), as well as Hasso (which offers job ability Haste, accuracy, and Strength) and Seigan + Third Eye (which offers great defensive capabilities, as it cuts Third Eye's recast to 30 seconds and allows it to potentially block multiple attacks). It doesn't necessarily offer as much offensive strength as /Warrior would, but it offers a nice blend of defense and offense that you can't get with any other subjob.
6) With most things nowadays, Hate control is out the window, because with the offensive strength of most jobs, they're going to reach the enmity cap very easy, so traditional tanking is pretty much gone nowadays in favor of players just bouncing hate off one another (jobs like Monk have an easier time keeping hate because of their high attack speed). All /Thf would really offer is, as you said, Treasure Hunter, and the ability to force your next hit to critical with Sneak Attack. Given though that Dragoon's best weaponskill right now is a critical hit weaponskill anyway (Drakesbane), forcing a crit is generally unnecessary, and you'd be losing out on a lot of offensive and defensive abilities by going /Thf over /Sam.
A Gungnir is a lot easier to obtain nowadays given the revamps they've done to Dynamis. I'll personally pull in 300+ coins on decent runs as a Thf/Dnc duoing with a Rdm/Whm (Though I can still get a decent amount of currency if I go alone), and being able to do that on a daily basis means that it won't take nearly as long as it used to. For the Attestations and the Fragments you'll still need a group, but given that those fights have been made far easier as well (can attempt multiple in a single run, and the Animated Weapons do not warp anymore), even they are nowhere near as difficult as they used to be.
As long as you have the Radiant Lance, you have the ability to acquire Drakesbane on your own, but with no floors cleared and saved on your Runic Disc, it will take you several thousand points worth of weaponskills to acquire it. On Lakshmi people still shout for the older Nyzul areas on occasion, so getting into those shout groups would be your best bet to obtain the Radiant Lance to unlock the quest.

I read a lot of Forum and says /SAM for self chain. How does it setup? is that for 2 WS chain or 3 WS chain?
Also, for /BLU, if I do the follow:
my TP: 100%+, Pet's TP: 200%+
Chain Affinity, First WS -> Blue Magic -> Spirit Link and 2nd WS
Does Chain Affinity need to have TP 100%+ to activate? What will happened if the CA + Blue Magic with low TP(like 14~20%TP)? Does the Blue Magic being resisted as a /BLU?
Since I have Spirit Link and /BLU won't trigger Elemental Breath, I don't really worry about the TP for the 2nd WS (of course, my HP must be high enough so that HB won't trigger. Also, no under effect that WS will trigger Cure Breath)

Hee hee, I sound like a lot of questions, one last question, after the first WS, can Spirit Jump and Soul Jumps can gain enough TP for 2nd WS (not counting Conserve TP)? How much time does SC allow between 2 WSs? Like First WS (14%+TP), then 2 jumps (70%+TP) and 1 more hit (14%+TP) = 98%+ TP. So, does some +StoreTP gear add up that can make 2 WS chain with 2 jumps and an extra hit in between?

1. Drakebane : Thats not true, atleast on my server there are tons who want to do Nyzul. I do runs twice a week and there are my people in my ls who wants to go, then there are actual slots.
2. As stated, its stupidly easy to farm currancy for relic. Alot of jobs can get up to 150 coins a day solo.
2. Subjobs. As you list drg has a huge possibilities when it comes to subjobs. Another sub not to overlook is /dnc. With a decent multi-hit magian weapon you can generate 100 tp every 10 seconds or so, not to mention the instant 100 tp you get from jumps. Overall its a amazing sub for survivability and utility.

If i manage an extra hit between 2 WS, then i can proc 2nd WS for 7-hit built. Otherwise, i need to build a 6-hit built.
For Delay 480 weapon, 7-hit build need StoreTP+10, 6-hit need StoreTP+29
For Delay 492 weapon, 7-hit build need StoreTP+8, 6-hit need StoreTP+25
For Delay 507 weapon, 7-hit build need StoreTP+4, 6-hit need StoreTP+22

Ok, Lastnite i tried to get a 7-hit build withteh following poor man gear:
Bushido Cape +1
Chivalrous Chain +1
Ecphoria Ring +1
Oneiros Rope +2
Tournament Lance +3 (Delay 492)
And swapping Draca Couse (Delay 480) and Hoard Ring +4
and some other gear with Instant Noodle (food, +5)
The goal is to keep StoreTP +8 for Delay 492 or +10 for Delay 480
What i tried is as follow:
after a hit, around 4-5 seconds (I am not quite sure the exact time, but that's what i feel)

/ja "Spirit Jump" <t> <wait 1>

The reason is, Miss! Miss! Miss! Skewer is ok because it is very accurate, but 2 Jumps and the extra hit got miss sometimes. Also. If the first hit from Skewer miss, i will not gain enough TP for the WS.
My conclusion is, 7-hit build do SC, but not solid. If i want to ensure the WS chain, it is better to get 6-hit build or heavy +ACC gear.
BTW, Defensive Wyvern's Spirit Link + 2nd WS + SC is consider even more powerful than Elemental Breath (IMHO). Currently, I use /RDM

The addition 50% from SC after my Penta Thrust is pretty sweet.
I just got my BLU and raise it to Lv10. Meanwhile switching to level from an exciting high dmg 90+ DRG to a weak green 10 BLU (notice, i didn't have chance to learn any Blue magic yet), it is quite boring >_<
My goal is to level both RDM and BLU to Lv 49, then see how Defensive Wyvern work.
After that, i will work on SAM and DNC. I think that will be a lot fun.
Also, I will try "G-Impulse Drive > Jumps + 1 hit > Vorpal Thrust > SL > Wheeling Thrust" tonight. I am not sure if anyone try before, but it will be my first time to get Lv3 SC. Wish me luck.... or, tell me if it is Mission Impossible.

In that case, it is very easy to get Compression SC
The addition 50% from SC after my Penta Thrust is pretty sweet.
I just got my BLU and raise it to Lv10. Meanwhile switching to level from an exciting high dmg 90+ DRG to a weak green 10 BLU (notice, i didn't have chance to learn any Blue magic yet), it is quite boring >_<
My goal is to level both RDM and BLU to Lv 49, then see how Defensive Wyvern work.
After that, i will work on SAM and DNC. I think that will be a lot fun.
Also, I will try "G-Impulse Drive > Jumps + 1 hit > Vorpal Thrust > SL > Wheeling Thrust" tonight. I am not sure if anyone try before, but it will be my first time to get Lv3 SC. Wish me luck.... or, tell me if it is Mission Impossible.
My thought is, separate it in 2 or 3 Macro

No luck to trigger 3 WS last few days. Either not enough TP from jump or miss some hits... T_T
I bet that my casual gear aren't good enough to do so yet.
Anyways, I am currently working on my Stingray (StoreTP) and Langdebeve (+STR and ATT)
and because of that, i went to do tons of solo to perform WS (i am focusing on Stingray ATM). Which help me to raise my WS to 300+ and obtain my Sonic Thrust.
Sonic Thrust is very good SC WS. It can self chain (Distortion) and open SC for Darkness. Against bird/bats, it is very effective.
I do got Distortion from Sonic Thrust > Sonic Thrust, but it seems that the SC only proc on the target mob. Is that normal or should I get proc on all hit mobs?. Does anyone has experience on AoE WS SC?
Also, for the polearm trial, Stingray (StoreTP) is for the self skillchain. Other than that, what trials are better? Langdebeve (+STR/ATT)? Corsesca (OAT/OA2-4/Double Attack+)? or, Rhongomiant to get Camlann's Torment and Aftermath?
I know Relic and Myth are somehow better choice, but i don't think it can be obtain as a casual player (ATM). Any thought?

If you're going to make a Magian lance, the best one is the OaT Corsesca, since with it and a five-hit TP setup, you'll be weaponskilling often. Rhongomiant as far as an Empyrean is rather lackluster (the weaponskill isn't worth the TP in terms of damage), the delay on the Langdebeve makes it a bit harder to get a solid 5-hit setup (which is what you want to aim for), and the Stingray line of lances just isn't that great (Store TP one won't really do you much to help you self skillchain).
