I've been looking in to this whole Magian Trials thing lately, and can't figure out what I'm supposed to be aiming for... that is to say, which trial should I do? I've been looking but can't figure out exactly which Dagger is the best one and I don't want to make a mistake... or do all roads lead to Rome, so to speak? I'm a level 75 Thief and I've got the Donto, but am trying to figure out which trials to do... any help would be appreciated.

Non-thief here, but the quick answer to your question is it's situational.

If you play thief a lot you may invest time in a few sets of daggers. Agi/evasion, dex/accuracy, str/attack, occasionally attacks twice or walk of echos gimpyrean weapons tend to be the most popular for dual wielders, but people in the know for thief should be able to answer your question better. Other non magian daggers that seem to be popular with thieves are the Rapidus Sax and Auric daggers.

While there may be a "best" setup I think there's a lot of wiggle room for what's considered a good dagger now then there was at 75.

Already explained how the GKT paths work out, same applies for daggers really, as for "what's best?" little trickier.

Solo: AGI(wind) path x2
DD: STR/DEX path, depending on gear, some up to date thf mains can go into details there.

im not sure how good the WoE/Emp weapons is for THF, but that's probably up there too.

You should be going after this:
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a372/Breaze/Twashtar.jpg

But seriously be realistic and go after what is possible for you. Look at your play time and see what is out there. If I was starting thf from zero I would get Daka+1. If I was starting sam from zero I would get Masamune.

I assume you saw the wiki list already? If not:

Pretty much this. You have all of your bases pretty much covered with these 4 daggers. They're definitely not the absolute best (unless you're counting the best evasion dagger then yes) but you won't be anywhere near gimp or mediocre.

Of magian trials...
I wonder which is better, Mandau(85) or Twatstar(85)... Mandau has 1 more DMG and 30Att against Twatstar's 10Dex. I have no idea what Rudra's Storm is like, but it says Triple Damage, that could just mean it has a 3.00ftp, the same as Mercy Stroke, but a weaker modifier 30% Dex apparantly, vs 60% Str).

Sounds like the WS is like a slightly weaker Mercy Stroke, and I think I'd take 30att over 10Dex/5Acc nowadays, I certainly dont find myself lacking for acc on exp mobs.

Then again Twashtar has a better sounding aftermath, Occ deals Double damage, compared to Mandau's Crit up...

I'd take the Twashter before the Mandau. Occ doing 2x damage beats out 30 attack easily provided the occasionally is the same as usual (I have no reason to doubt it, and that means melee crits as well). There is a lot of information lacking on the Rudra's Storm page on the wiki but it works like Mercy Stroke and I have a feeling it's stronger than mercy, but I'm sitting on 14/30 coins of birth and I can't say for sure without trying it out myself. Fudo is overpowered and I think Rudra's is very strong too.

The difference between GETTING Mandau (85) and Twashter (85) however is huge. Not only do you have to get 18,000 dynamis coins but then you have to deliver the finishing blow with Mercy Stroke to thousands of mobs just to level Mandau to 85. Twashter in comparison is easy with some support (just takes time). The trials leading up to the VNM stage of Twashter are a joke, and the VNm's can be done in a party. All 4 of Glavoid's pop triggers can be farmed from gold pyxides in abyss-tahrongi (I got my first set Sunday this way). Glavoid himself can be taken down with a party of 6 provided you fight him right (Glavoid is only hard if you cure the sh*t out of him, but if you fight him without over curing it he isn't that bad and can easily be done with 10-12). Itzamoth is something that any abyssea linkshell will be doing ANYWAY because he drops stones and cards of vision for AF +2 hats. My linkshell has killed 8 Itza's and I have 13 Itza shells to show for it, so the final stage (currently) is easy enough. The only obstacle to my Twashter is Glavoid, and I'll knock that out slowly over time. I'll just duo or trio for pops when I have some time and try and get a good group for the fight itself. Twashter can be obtained in several months if you zerg it hardcore, or done in more like 6-9 if you do it slower. It's really not that hard if you have some decent friends. The biggest obstacle is getting help (people would often rather farm Masamune than anything else), but with some loyal friends Twashter (85) is easier to get than Mandau (85).

so, a daka+1 is not the way to go, nor say parazonium+1, the occasionally attacks 2-3 times? or is the STR/DEX thing not a good endgame combo, whereas a daka+1 might be? or what..

Can't really say how well RS stacks compared to new Evis' and MS, but if you can get daka you can probably get twast, which is actually good due to the aftermath iirc

So are you giving up on your Mandau then?

Yes, I am. I think the Twashter will be stronger than the Mandau, but that aside I was never able to get linkshell support in dynamis (mainly because I quit after getting my relic armor). I get more satisfaction battling for my stuff than buying it outright and unlike dynamis I enjoy abyssea and I've spent plenty of time at events. I'm just biding my time atm to see what happens in the coming months, but I may end up buying a N Sash or Mars's ring at the very least instead and chip away at Twashter when I get a chance/shell farms nms with upgrades.

The point we are trying to make is that there are a lot of good daggers out there. And depending on your playtime you can pick one or more. One dagger combo will be a few % better then the other dagger combo. There is not a standard way to go.

Do you have 6 or more good in-game friends and do you have lots of playtime? Go Twashtar.
Do you duo/trio a lot and have a medium amount of playtime? Go Daka+1.
Do you solo a lot and is your playtime lowish? Go evasion dagger (wind kila).
ect, ect.

The problem is we don't know you, your playtime, your in-game friends and the events you like. So we can't help you until you give us more information.

I'm going for a Daka just because of its name. You can never have enough of it.
