I only have 3 problems with Apple, and none are enough for me to hate them.
1. I don't like the fact that they release a new version of their products every damn year. It actively repels me from buying, because I can't afford to upgrade that often and don't like feeling like waiting will always be better. I much prefer systems designed to be updated via software, with more comprehensive upgrades released every few years. I don't think it's a bad business practice, per se, but it makes me uninterested in their products.

2. I don't like the fact that they are definitely overpriced based on their specs. This is not limited to them by any means, with Sony being a good PC counterpart.

3. The only legitimate gripe I have with them as a company is the way they've changed with regards to IP. Now, they sue everyone who gets remotely close to theirs (like a Korean company because their logo was an apple that looked, in no way, like their own). To be clear, yes--every company does this nowadays. The reason I consider Apple worse above those is because they made their fame shamelessly using the ideas of others, which I actually don't have a problem with. They never outright stole IP, to the best of my knowledge, but they were definitely cutting it closer than any other company--Steve Jobs was quite open about that, because he considered it (and I agree) part of the creative process.

Which is why I dislike them as hypocrites nowadays.

None of this would be enough to convince me, if they released a product I really wanted. I use an iPod (granted, it's one of the earliest Nano models I've had for 7-8 years now). If I get a job in NYC, I'll probably buy a tablet to help pass time when commuting (though I'd look seriously at the Kindle Fire as well).

As for laptops, I'll never buy Apple. Not for any moral reason, but because I abhor having to use the Fn key to right click.

I just inserted MQM there - MQM being the extremely volatile political party representing the muhajireen (Indian origin Pakistanis) around here. They do a lot of good, like help the poor and kick the Taliban's asses, but then they go around shooting random people for their ethnicity. I talked to an MQM supporter who didn't deny that was messed up last night. Very good. Smiley: smile

Edit: Fun fact, I said something like "at least there's no MQM in the UK", just to have to correct myself because their leader (as about half of Pakistan's political/religious leaders) is in exile in London.

I have a 4th generation ipod nano, that thing is as good as indestructible.
Also, you can set up the right and left clicking and whatever else you want in any way you like on a macbook so your reason is rather moot.

Yeah I think I have a 4th or 5th gen one. It's purple, and I <3 it. My sister had a second gen classic I think, and it just recently died after 7 years because she dropped it in a bucket of water while she was washing her car. It lasted a good amount of time for how much she abused it, lol.

If I was going to get a tablet, I'd probably get a kindle fire. I've played with an ipad, but I just don't see the point in spending $500 on one.

I have the 120 160gb iPod classic, and I'm pretty sure it'd take the fires of Mordor to destroy so I'm good with that. I won't get a macbook because it's much more expensive and less useful than what I'd use a portable computer for.

Mine was once black/dark grey, it's scratch coloured now.
It's survived snow, rain, my cat playing with it, being dragged behind my bicycle when it fell out of my pocket (My old headphones had a rather long cord), being dropped down stairs and a plethora of other things that would normally kill an mp3 player. It's like the Toyota pickup truck of mp3 players.

1. Dell/HP/Alienware/Motorola/HTC upgrade far more often than Apple, actually. There's a new Android phone every other month and Dell/HP seem to upgrade as often as Apple if not more frequently.

2. Sony doesn't have the same software capabilities as an out-of-the-box Mac. Sorry, just truth. You pay an extra couple hundred bucks for the creativity software you get with a Mac.

3. Apple does everything they (we) can to protect what we believe is ours within the law and if others care enough, they can do the same. Every massively successful company does the exact same thing, so it baffles me that you refuse to buy Apple products based on this when every PC maker (hell, every major corporation) does the same.

You can enable right click by tapping on the bottom-right corner of the trackpad. Apple laptops are the best in the business. Towers and all-in-ones Apple may be a little pricey, but their laptops are much better quality. I've owned one laptop that wasn't an Apple, and I'll never own one again because the build quality was sh*t (it was a $2000 Alienware, BTW).

PigtailsOfDoom wrote:
The only objection I have to apple products is that it seems like you can get a similar product from Windows for cheaper that works just as well. At least when it comes to PC's. You can pry my ipod from my cold dead hands. I've tried using other MP3 players with WMP, and blech.

Most of what Apple does is about software integration. For instance, I can click a time/date in my email app and it automatically pulls all of the relevant info from that email and makes a calendar event for me, with zero effort from me. I can then send that calendar event to anyone in my address book with a couple clicks (or taps if on my phone).

I can also put a schedule in my computer (or my phone/tablet) and it's automatically pushed to my other devices. Change it and that gets pushed as well.

It's a small thing, but it makes a pretty big difference. I freak out when I don't have any of my devices around to check weather, schedule, email, etc.

Of course you can get something cheaper from Dell or HP, but for comparable software solutions you're going to be spending as much as an Apple product. The only true way to get something much cheaper than an Apple is to build it yourself, which 90% of the population isn't comfortable/capable of doing. That's what I did with my current gaming PC, but I also have a dual-monitor iMac for work and basically everything but gaming.

Also, there's nothing that compares to an iPad in the tablet market. If there was, the iPad wouldn't have the colossal market share that it does.

From an objective point of view, no one device really compares to the iPhone/iPad/iPod. CPUs Apple will obviously not be a leader in market share for a long time (if ever), but in mobile computing/entertainment it's really hard to say any other company does it better.

Hackintoshes are actually a lot of fun. I got a cheap netbook from a friend and put OS X on it. It runs like sh*t because netbooks are stupid and have no resources, but it's fun to confuse people.

Really the three options when buying a tablet right now:

1. New iPad ($500-$830; best tablet on the market by a healthy margin)

2. iPad 2 ($400-$530; if you want the capabilities of the iPad but don't care about an upgraded camera or retina display)

3. Kindle Fire ($200; if you want a tablet but want to do it on a budget and don't care if you're locked into Amazon's system)

Anything else is generally not going to be great because developers only see these two platforms (Kindle Fire and iPad) as worthy of developing software for (time vs money kind of thing).

Most Android apps won't be developed for the tablet you get, if you can even find an Android app that does what you want.

"The International Bittering Units scale, or simply IBU scale, provides a measure of the bitterness of beer, which is provided by the hops used during brewing. Bittering units are measured through the use of a spectrophotometer and solvent extraction. [14]

This technique was adopted at the same time as another method based on measuring the concentration (in milligrams per liter; parts per million w/v) of isomerized α acids in a beer, causing some confusion among small-scale brewers.[15] The American Society of Brewing Chemists, in the introduction to its methods on measuring bitterness, points out some differences between the results of the two methods:

While the results of the IAA [isomerized α acids] methods are practically identical to those obtained by the [I]BU method for beer brewed with fresh hops, the IAAs of beer brewed with old or poorly stored hops, and with certain special hop extracts, can be significantly lower than the [I]BU figure.[14]

The bittering effect is less noticeable in beers with a high quantity of malt, so a higher IBU is needed in heavier beers to balance the flavor. For example, an Imperial Stout may have an IBU of 50, but will taste less bitter than an English Bitter with an IBU of 30, because the latter beer uses much less malt than the former. The technical limit for IBU's is around 100; some have tried to surpass this number, but there is no real gauge after 100 IBUs when it comes to taste threshold. Light lagers without much bitterness will generally have 5 IBUs, while an India Pale Ale may have 100 IBUs or more.[16]"

I have a bottle of Lagunitas Hop Stoopid for tomorrow, it claims to have 102 IBU.
And right now I'm drinking a 3 Fonteinen Oude Kriek which has a lovely sour cherry and lemon flavour.

Got to love the diversity in taste of beers <3

I honestly can't stand the "hop bombs" that we have on the West coast.

Also Aeth, have you ever seen a show called "Drinking Made Easy"? Seems like it would be right up your alley.

Hop bombs are an acquired taste, try some Left Hand 400 Pound Monkey or Anderson Valley Hop Ottin' IPA before going for the hop bombs. At some point the taste will click and you'll be wanting more of that delicious hoppy bitterness. I'd also advise trying some of De Molen's IPA's but those are likely to be unavailable for you.

Also, I @#%^ing hate you for not appreciating beer while you live close to the holy land of beers.

And that site is praising Pauwel Kwak which, although it has an amazing glass, is a really mediocre beer. And I've read half the articles through Reddit anyway. Smiley: tongue

I really need to follow my own advice sometimes. Terra Nova wasn't the greatest show out there, but one season with no closure? This one even turned a profit, so what the hell?

They need to start making multi-season deals, or make separate story arcs for each season, because this is getting ridiculous.

It only got something like 3.0 ratings points at it's high point. To compare, I Love Lucy (Highest Nielsen rated show) got 67 points average during it's run.

I Love Lucy ran during the 50's. A couple of years before cable TV hit the streets, if you know what I mean.

As long as a high-cost show like that turns a profit, enough people were watching it (7.5 million US on average). They cancelled it because, well, they're FOX, but also because they estimated a drop in viewers which would turn the profit into, at best, less of a profit. They're trying to sell the show to other networks now.

Money is a hell of a thing, right?

Depends on what you like. The West coast is where most of the innovation is happening, France is still a lot of traditional winemaking. Blends and experimentation make wine more fun (and more affordable), similar to what's happening to beer.

If you want a more modern comparison, CSI used to get 16s and American Idol 17s. 3.0 at it's height is abysmal no matter which way you look at it. That was the first episode. The rest of the episodes got like 2.2. Though the biggest explanation is that "It's Fox." They've canceled better shows. Trying to make sense out of it is like trying to figure out why a naked three year old puts a bucket on her head and runs through the living room chasing a dog.

Which is my cue to investigate.

I love my iPad and used to love my iPhone. I loved the iPhone right up to the point Apple released a new iPhone and forced my older phone to use the new software which makes it now run like a dog. Swiping between screens now pauses a second each time and the battery now only lasts 24hrs (with bluetooth off!). At the time, there was a lot of people complaining and even talk of a class action but I don't think anything happened. Damned if i'm going to upgrade my phone though - that is like rewarding Apple for screwing me over.

My favourite device in the world is my Kindle though :) When I go on holidays for 3 weeks I used to take a dozen or so novels - my suitcase is so much lighter now (or would be without all the extra baby stuff in there now!)

Speaking of which, I just woke up after three hours of sleep in which I had the most surreal (in the sense that it seemed too real) experience of being a father and a federal agent. The memories are fading now, but I'm pretty sure all the conversation took place in English.

So you're using a 3GS? A 3 year-old phone?

Because that's not normal behavior for a 4. I had a 4 up until my contract renewal was up in November and I was beta testing iOS 5 for about six months before it came out and never had any problems.

Expecting a smart phone to go more than a day and a half or so on a charge with normal, regular usage is unreasonable. You do realize that you're using a miniature computer and it still fits in your front pocket, right? It's not an iPad where 70% of the device can be battery space.

Some things that will likely help with your battery life, though: turn off all notifications that you don't absolutely need. Close apps in the multitasking tray if you're not using them. Don't use location services often. Don't watch movies on your phone. Use WiFi when possible. Turn your brightness down. Turn push off in your mail, and set it to only retrieve every hour.

I've had my phone on all day and I still have 77% battery BTW. 2 hours of use, 9 hours of standby (yes, I woke up at noon today).

EDIT: Oh, and Apple doesn't care if you buy a phone. The company sells so many phones every day it's actually pretty comical.

Honestly, forcing all iPhone users to upgrade to the newest firmware was stupid and a bit of a dick move on Apple's part. They knew the older generations (and 3G) couldn't handle the updates. Yes, they're old phones, but some people don't go out and buy a $1000 phone (yes, that's what a new iPhone costs here) every year.

I like Apple's products, but I've no doubt that they want to pump their customers for every last penny. Most companies want to do that, but Apple seems to be pretty open about it. Unless it's not intentional, in which case they should hire a spin doctor or something.

I like Apple computers.

I like my Android phone.

I love my iPod.

I hate Windows, I spent half a day making win7 run fast and it still seems more sluggish than my 4 year old mac book pro that has half the ram.

Windows 7 is gorgeous. Absolutely love this operating system. Never had any issues with it either. I did tweak it a bit to make it boot faster, but ultimately found out that the real culprit was the Steam client. That ancient crap will slow down anything.

Without carrier subsidies, that's comparable to my iPhone.

Apple charges what they charge because people have no problem paying it. It's like owning a Rolex or a Mercedes/BMW/Audi. Quality products that are also somewhat status symbols for people that are concerned about that.

And no one is ever forced to upgrade their OS. People still come into Apple stores using iOS 4 and OSX 10.4 (10.5 came out in 2007). Some features may not be there, but the functionality is still the same.

Try compiling with netbeans on win 7 then get back to me.

Aero, the main visual upgrade, had to die so I could work. UAC also was a killer ad needed to die.

Win 7 sucks for a development machine. Of course I'm fairly certain me n maz are doin way different sh*t on our windows boxes.

This is with 8 gigs of ram mind you. I get better speeds via RDP on my 2008 server client or old mac laptop.

UAC is easy to kill. Much less intrusive in 7 than it was in Vista.

And Java just sucks in general. But we gotta use it. Smiley: frown

Been listening to this song a lot: from Scott Pilgrim vs the World. Emily Haines' voice is awesome.

Edit: Red Hot Chili Peppers announced that they'll be releasing 18 new songs over the next six months asdjfdhbkhaefbk vewfv

Blarf they made me learn Java cause it is what they use at work.

Amazingly, with minimal proper Java earning I understand it well. You know one language you know them all, well maybe at least enough to use it. Programming is not a specific syntax it is a ___. With the ____ being something wiser people fill in.

Logic and math is universal. I learned them in skool.

I located your problem, Horse. Don't use Win7 for compiling/rendering. Use it for gaming, surfing the web and whatever else you do. You'd be able to turn Aero back on as well.

Or get Win8 when it comes out. I heard it's faster than Win95, lul.

I think I've met a someone that could potentially be a special someone while I'm down here. Well, I didn't just meet him. He's in Grease with me, but we've been hanging out a fair amount and flirting quite a bit. Tonight he played with my hair and made me make happy noises. Smiley: grin So I returned the favor and couldn't resist pulling on his hair and he made some really happy noises, lol. I get the feeling that if I want to pursue this though, that I'm going to have to make the first move, because he's pretty inexperienced. I hate making the first move. Smiley: glare

I have a Win8 beta DVD flying around somewhere. From what I've heard, it works pretty well (apart from the app store, which is not even there at all in Win 7, so no big change there).

Damn crackers.

They always seem to break in the tea, leaving one fumbling with one's spoon in a futile attempt to get the bits up, don't you agree?

Maz, that's why you get stroopwafels and just put them on top of the cup to let them get soft a bit. Much better than other cookies.

My only reaction to that is an overwhelming "eh, whatever". The last things they've done bored me so much I've pretty much lost all interest in the band.

Haven't had a good spot of tea since I gave up my archaic beliefs for the more hedonistic Rubiaceae treat. Pardon the pseudo-British typing. Just finished Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. It was quite an exhilarating endeavour!

Okay, scrap it, I don't even think endeavor is the correct word. And something just dawned on me. Endeavor is the American spelling while endeavour is the British spelling. How come the NASA space shuttle was named Endeavour and not Endeavor?

via Wiki wrote:
Endeavour was named through a national competition involving students in elementary and secondary schools. Entries included an essay about the name, the story behind it and why it was appropriate for a NASA shuttle, and the project that supported the name. Endeavour was the most popular entry, accounting for almost one-third of the state-level winners. The national winners were Senatobia Middle School in Senatobia, Mississippi, in the elementary division and Tallulah Falls School in Tallulah Falls, Georgia, in the upper school division. They were honored at several ceremonies in Washington, D.C., including a White House ceremony where then-President George H.W. Bush presented awards to each school.[7]
Southerners. George Bush. Probably couldn't tell the difference between American and British spellings.

Tea is just coffee without winnage.

It can offer me nothing I do not already receive tenfold from coffee.

Edit: Something else just dawned on me. The thing that makes soda and beer all bubbly. Carbon dioxide. CO2. We call carbon dioxide, when dissolved in liquid, kulsyre, carbon acid, which is something entirely different in English, isn't it?

I put 5 Hour Energy Drink in my coffee this morning. Its the first time in years (if not decades) I've felt jittery.

It tasted horrible.

Yeah, I prefer to have my energy drinks before or after the coffee. Preferably, I skip the energy drink and go with an extra cup of coffee or three.
