Honestly, I'm not even sure if I'm going to enjoy D3 much. I'm more or less doing it cause I'm a blizz fanboi and want to sell crap on real money AH:p. Also playing with other people should be fairly entertaining.
What sucks is that they got rid of both the Druid and the Necromancer. :( Yeah, I know the Witch Doctor is kinda fusion of the two, but it's just not the same as having a massive horde of minions.
Also, yeah I was looking for a source. I looked all over the Battle.net site and didn't see anything about beta access, so I was confused.
[EDIT]
I used to be a Blizz fanboi, but they've made more than enough missteps in the past two+ years to really void my confidence in them. There's a good chance I'll play D3, but I have no plans to buy the game. That starter version will probably be important in my decision.

You have no idea how awesome it is sometimes.
And then I go home and become the minion.

At least you're more reasonable than Square fanboys. There's a company that has been abusing their fanbase for decades and still has people frothing at the mouth at pretty much anything they release. I've been clean of my Square fanboyitis for about five years now.

I don't actually have the beta, I played it at a friends house. I kind of wish I could play a bit more, but at the same time, I'm happy that I won't get bored with it.

Diablo 2 is stupidly repetitive yet strangely addicting. If D3 can entertain me for even half the time D2 has it'll be more than worth the 50 bucks. Hours of hacking and slashing through hordes of zombies with The Misfits blaring from the speakers and I'm a happy camper.
Yup. I put a Pandora station on and play. Demon Hunter is a ridiculous amount of fun even at level 9. I have yet to try another class because I'm so enamored with my DH.
Also, there's something hilarious about killing demons and zombies to a Frank Sinatra soundtrack.

I was never an SE fanboy, though I did (and still do) have some FF fanboy issues. But even those are minimal now. I liked FFXIII a fair bit, unlike many other people, but have nearly no interest in playing FFXIII-2, despite hearing nothing but good things about it. Probably will pick it up in the future, once it's cheap.
They DO need to get on top of FFXIII Versus, though. I want my dark mafia action-JPRG, dammit.
And completely random bit of annoyance--they are releasing the sequel to KH2 on the 3DS. And for that, SE can suck my d***.
One of my issues with D3's gameplay is that each class has a "best" ability to use for primary and secondary attack. On every playthrough, I ended up going with something spammable on the primary attack and something ka-blewey for the secondary attack. In the case of the Demon Hunter, I used that ricocheting arrow thing for the primary attack and the machine gun arrow thing for the secondary attack. Spam one button until you can spam the other and done.
Also, and I'm not sure if they've fixed this yet, the click-to-move and click-to-attack mechanics are making me furiously mad at whoever came up with it. If you miss a fast moving target and click right next to it, your character starts moving to that location - right through a horde of baddies and whatnot. Either use the mouse for movement or attacking, not both.

The DRM? You mean because you have to log in to play it? I'm used to that from StarCraft 2 and various Ubisoft games (except Ubisoft went full retard with their DRM).
I think it's stupid that they're starting to demand a constant internet connection for single player games. Especially since the pirates are going to crack the stuff two weeks before launch anyway. I don't imagine the DRM will be my primary concern about this game, though, as I don't imagine I'll be buying it. I don't think I'll be "borrowing" it either, it just felt way too meh for that.

Maz, if you hold down shift, you won't move and just attack. Comes in super handy as a DH (and also you can generate hatred outside of actual combat so you can spam Rapid Fire).
Also, if you don't want to spam abilities, stick to console RPGs. WoW and D3 both spam abilities.

That was really to be expected, it's the exact same thing in D2 (And D1 I imagine but I never played that)

I don't mind spamming multiple abilities, but just two gets boring sorta fast.
Didn't know about Shift, though. That'll make life easier.

Well, took the boyfriend back to his shuttle bus yesterday. We had a lot of fun while he was here, so I'm glad about that. Just wish he could have stayed longer than three nights. Or that I could have gone home with him...
We went out to karaoke at the skeeviest bar in town on Tuesday night, after play practice. A few of our theater friends do that on a pretty regular basis. They swore up and down it would be calm, because nobody goes there on Tuesday. Well, there were two people there with birthdays, and their friends were there with them. There were several fights that almost broke out, one of my friends was nearly accosted by a bunch of dudes sitting outside the bar, trying to tell her that she shouldn't have married her husband, how he was a loser and she would be better off with one of them. So, neither one of them were too thrilled with that lol. Then one of the drunk dudes tried to strip up on the karaoke stage while someone else was singing. But other than that, it was a lot of fun. I hurt my voice though. One of my friends did Pink's song So What, and I got so excited I started yell-singing along with her. My throat still hurts, but I've been trying to help it along with some lemon juice and honey in hot water. Hopefully that helps.

Sigh, D3, sigh... I don't remember any other game that made me so excited then so completely drained that enthusiasm during the "ramp up to release" period. Hell, even SWTOR waited to disappoint until well into the release gameplay. The demo was just so..... meh. Combat in a spammy RPG should feel stompy and fast-paced. My last play of the D3 demo did not feel like that. I even went back to D2 just for comparison and that felt more "action-y". Maybe I'm crazy...
Glad you had a good time PT. Hopefully you two will figure out how to be in the same city at some point =)
In other news, knowing brewers is a good thing. A friend of mine (with whom my lady and I have dinner with about once a week) just put in a Green Flash Stout keg from his new job. Nomnomnom. Getting low-fills and growlers from most of the better brewers in town is making me fat and happy. Huzzah!

wtf... who rates people down in this thread? Seriously?
Oh, and I forgot to mention the funniest part. A few weeks back, a guy I graduated with came into work, and we talked for a bit. He was actually really nice, and friendly. Not that he was ever an outright dick to me in high school, but he wasn't ever nice to me either. Then on Tuesday, he was there at the bar. John had gone into the smoking area to talk to one of the guys, and I was sitting in a booth with a few other people. This guy comes over and sits next to me and starts getting all gabby. Then his friend comes over and he's all "Hey do you know this guy? He's my buddy!" I have no idea who this guy is. After a couple minutes of me and my theater buddies looking at each other awkwardly and trying not to laugh, he and his buddy get up and leave. Then later, he comes back by again to talk to me, but John is sitting with me, and he looks up at the guy and puts his arm around me, and the guy gets a funny look on his face and then walks away. I didn't think anything of it, but John and I talked about it on the ride up yesterday, and he's positive that the guy was coming over to hit on me and that he scared him away. I find that very amusing, lol.

I think we can all agree that the D3 beta isn't enough to decide if all the gameplay is lackluster or not. It's just too short.
I personally like it, though mainly because it's super casual compared to how I play WoW. Pick 6 abilities, spam as needed, kill zombies/demons, profit.
I've been having a blast playing the beta, keeping in mind what the first part of D2 felt like.

I rate down Raw, but that's about it. :P Rated you back up, Pigtails. Happy you had fun, though it sucks he had to leave so soon.
As for D3, from what I've seen in the trailers it is significantly faster-paced then D2 was. Thing is, D2 WAS a fast-paced game for its time. But, due to various factors like computer/internet advances and proliferation, games have definitely gotten faster in pacing as a general rule (with exceptions).
For instance, try playing Ocarina of Time. It's still a great game, but you'll find yourself wondering why it's all so slow. Playing Windwaker isn't nearly so bad (at least where pacing is concerned).
I think that's what's going on here. You are remembering the pace of the game relative to general game pacing of the time. Now, slow games are rare, so the "Average" speed of a game is much, much higher. D3 is definitely quite a bit faster where gameplay is concerned, but it probably hasn't increased as much (due to obvious limitations) as the average pace has.
Plus, remember that your memories of D3 are primarily colored by your play experience in later levels. Even a brand new Assassin was a slow character in D2 compared to one who actually had high resources and ability variance.
Here's a video showing Tristam in all 3 games. Speed in relation to environment has definitely gone up with each game.
Changes to combat speed are less obvious, but combat has definitely become more dynamic. We don't see much running in a combat context in this video where D3 is concerned, where we do see that in D2 (primarily because they are just ignoring the lesser minions). But D3 brings us a far greater variety of ways to move about the field.
Also, @Maz (and people in general), is the beta multiplayer? Because I recall that D2 enemies scaled with the number of people in your world. When solo, killing things was simple, but soloing in a full world required ingenuity.
Like with my Sorceress. I don't remember the spells I used, really, but I remember that all I ever did when solo in a solo world was teleport and use Frost Orb. But if I was solo in a full world, that was not going to cut it--I'd need to play more defensively and tactically.
I think we can all agree that the D3 beta isn't enough to decide if all the gameplay is lackluster or not. It's just too short.
Fair point. Not to mention playing the same short demo several times doesn't help the enthusiasm.
And I'm comparing the D3 demo to my D2 pally in hell-act 3. Also note, that I played hardcore (perma-death) characters in D2 most often, which brings up the stress level significantly. I'm not trying to say that D3 will be a bust, only that this pre-release time frame is surprisingly enthusiasm-sucking time for this title for me disproportionally to other recent titles.
I can only pray that the GW2 demo next weekend doesn't ruin that title for me. The alpha and demo builds I played make me confident but you never know.

You should play Dragon Age.
I tried it, absolutely hate RPG controls and I uninstalled it after an hour or two.

The whole 'pausing every other second to queue up 4 character's abilities' thing still feels awkward to me. I like how you get both a turn-based feel and a live action feel, but it can be pretty clunky at times.

Yeah, see, that makes a game pretty much unplayable for me. Either go turn based OR live action, something in between just frustrates me to no end.

If you set up your tactics properly, and don't mind making some poor decisions, then you won't need to pause.
Meh, screw that. I'll just spam two buttons to turn hordes of zombies into a bloody, gooey mess.

Seriously, the tactics aren't that difficult to set up. And they aren't anywhere near as abusable as they were in FF12.
Though it was infuriating how long you had to wait to get certain important clauses in that game...
Tactics are really dependent on how many abilities you intend to use, your composition, and how many abilities are conditional. Setting up Alistair is fairly simple. As is Wynne, if she's only a healer. But balancing in CC (which I don't recommend doing, because it's so much better to manually choose it, to ensure it's up when you need it), and it gets irritating.
What irritates me, and it totally shouldn't, is that they don't attack your tank's target by default. I know, your tank isn't set. So it's stupid to complain. But I remember getting so annoyed before I really discovered tactics in my first play through.
