Do you guys think that in order to be a successful culinarian in FFXIV you will need to lvl up fishing as well like in FFXI? If so i might be rethinking taking up cooking :P unless skill-ups are more frequent than they were in FFXI.

I would think being a Botanist would help too, since you'd probably be able to grow foods and things. That's definitely something I'm looking forward to!

I'm pretty sure most cooking recipes will include items crafted from skills that are in a nearby area. After all, mostly the density of a recipe's ingredients would require skills that may be found in locations nearby. Unlike the Optical Hat run in Final Fantasy Eleven, I'd think that most recipe's ingredients would be found in and or around the Aetheryte crystal that houses the cooking guild and/or cottage or whathaveyou. There may be recipes that require rare ingredients, but at a beginner's level, on the onset of production there wouldn't be too many hard to find or difficult to combine ingredients that I could think of. Most guilds don't usually require cross-guild crafting until later levels, such as post-teen levels, taking a bit from FFXI. I'm kinda curious though, about the amount of availability there will be around Aetheryte crystals and what options are available to crafters, if there is are advantages to crafting at Aetheryte, and where the different guilds are situated around the Aetheryte locations.

I plan on doing both. I've mentioned numerous times already that I plan on starting as Fisherman for a steady, long-term source of income. Culinarian just seems natural from there.

Sign me up as a fisherman too, assuming it makes it in to the game, Square's site, I couldn't find it. Maybe I have FFXIV overload having just started to get acquainted with the info released so far.

Kadin, there's now a Fisher class forum, thanks to Pikko. I already made the first post there. Drop by and leave a comment or two.

I don't think that it will be required to be a fisherman in order to succeed with cooking, however it would be incredibly valuable to also become a fisherman. Why? Because fishing is super-boring and hardly anyone wants to do it. In FFXI, it was said to take at least a year of straight fishing to get Lv.100 in that craft.

If you combine cooking and fishing, you will be able to make expensive fish platters (like the sushi in FFXI) without having to spend buttloads of moola on the fish (which is usually the most expensive part.)

Also adding botany and alchemy to your list of disciplines will prove to be further beneficial to you if you are already a fishing cook. With botany, you can get herbs and veggies and fruit and grains. Alchemy also uses botany and fishing; for example, certain harvested items like roots are used in certain potions, and some fish are used for their ink or their poisonous qualities etc.

It sounds like a lot of people wanna be mainly fisherman and are taking culinarian as just a supplement to that, but I'm the other way around. I wanna be a culinarian first and foremost, and am interested in both fishing and botany to supplement my cooking. Fishing moreso than botany, since I'm sure botany will produce a lot of stuff for other professions such as Weaving, whereas I feel Fishing will primarily supplement cooking.

They both seem like cool Disciplines of the Land, but fishing probably a bit moreso to me. I love the idea of just sitting next to a nice cozy stream anywhere in the lush world of FFXIV and fishing for awhile, lol.

I'll take up Botanist if I find it necessary, otherwise I plan to stick to one class from each discipline.

I'm hoping that my income will come from those Alchemists, Goldsmiths, and Culinarians who want/need certain fish for ingredients, but don't have the time or inclination to fish themselves. You could do the same thing with your Botanist - provide materials to Weavers and Carpenters.

I agree with most here. Fishing and Botanist seem the most logical at this point. I am aiming for this order of crafting 1.Culinary 2.Fishing 3.Botanist. Like most say it seems like the "natural" thing to do. In FFXI I did Fishing, Carpentry (to fix rods) and Alchemist. This round I really want to focus on Cooking the goods. I really hope they have the craft boosting gear at later levels like the Apron and Waders from Fishing in XI. That would make for even more reason to get that crafting level higher :)

Another thing I thought of: take up Culinarian to make some of your bait. FFXI had insect balls that required a certain level of cooking skill. All the more reason to use both classes.

I'll keep that in mind for when they add Mog Houses. Right now, there aren't any.

I am currently Culinarian, Fisherman and Alchemist. All around level 13. It works very nicely since Alchemist provides so many ingredients for cooking and is also able to split or combine crystals.

Fishing is, once you learned the signs and messages, very enjoyable and not as difficult as you think when you first cast your line.
The only problem i have is that depth does nothing except give you a "clean slate" of possible hookable targets. You can get clams at the water surface for example. I would hope this will get fixed in the final.
There is also no way to target specific fish as of now. You get everything from the available pool. There are 2 fishing pools though, regular and schools of fish you found using the skills. Some fish you can only hook in schools. Unlike FFXI there is no way to tell what you get when you hook it.

Botany i have tested and to be honest i would stay away from it if possible. It's not very rewarding for a Culinarian. There are simply too many Weaver and Carpenter items mixed into the loot pool that already consists of Alchemy and Culinarian drops. Sure, you could argue that 50% would be interesting for you, but i found it to be very random and getting a stack of olives, beehive chips or Oranges just takes way too long.
Also, in this stage, harvesting with your scythe is like harvesting in FFXI. Hit or Miss and a random drop. No mini game like for logging.

For the final i will stick to Fisherman, Culinarian and Alchemist and do Botanist on the side when i don't have much time.

PS: As soon as you can grow your own stuff, i am with you Pikko. Then you also might be able to influence what you can harvest.

Thank you for the information KindjalFerrer. I got into the fishing job late in Beta3 and found it very frustrating at first until I earned a few levels with spearfishing. By the time they closed the servers, I got my fishing to L.15 and my cooking to L.8. I was having a lot of trouble with Alchemy for some reason. Any tips on raising Alchemy from what I catch from fishing? I also have a few more questions.

* Did you find enough variety of crystals and shards from just fishing alone?
* Did you find any Tier-2 spearfishing areas?
* How many Tier-1 spearfishing spots did you find? I only found three.
* Were you able to get a upgrade to your fishing pole? Did you notice a difference in fishing with it?
* Did you use the same type of bait or a variety of types?
* Do you have some additional information of "schools of fish"?

I'm planning on going Fisherman, Culinarian, CONJ and THM. But I don't want to start the mages until I reach L.10 in fishing and cooking. But I am interested in Alchemy. Any tips would be greatly treasured.
