I'm working through my quest log at the moment, and regretfully I started the Lu Shangs quest several years back, so now I'm fishing like mad to get my moats to finish the quest. However, I figure since I'll end up with the second best fishing rod in the game, I might as well start working on fishing again!
However, I'm trying to find somewhere what happens if you release a catch when using a lure. Do you lose the lure? I know you do with bait, I assume the same is true with a lure, but can't find it explicitly stated anywhere. Figured whilst I'm just fishing up moats and this isn't a major problem yet I'll try and get the answer to save myself losing a lure later on!

Using bait, if you get a bite, you will always lose it.
Using a lure, you only lose it if your rode/line breaks.
When fishing for moat carp, insect paste is far and away your best option.

Yup, well aware of that, I've been using a Hume rod with insect paste in Knightswell for my moats. I used to fish them up for cash (sold them at the AH), so I'm already fairly familiar with where to get them.
However if I do get my Lu Shang's rod, I won't be fishing up moats anymore, I'll be working my way up to bigger fish, so needed to understand the mechanics of how a lure works for that point in time.
