There's a timer at http://ffxi.lokyst.net/timer/crafttimer.html which can help you figure these things out. This is a controversial topic among crafters, though. I think many (perhaps most) folks accept that day of the week affects things, but the precise amount is not certain (the timer link suggests 1 point either way). Facing a particular direction might or might not help (+/-1), and the same with moon phase (+/-1). Also, you can get basic (free) or advanced (paid) support, which the FFXIclopedia suggests adds +1 or +2 skill, respectively. Of course, the same wiki also states that it's actually +1/+3 - go figure.

Bottom line, nobody knows for sure, but lots of folks have their superstitions. Most of the crafters I personally know, including myself, will face the "right" direction in case it helps, but don't really expect it to make a difference. Guild support definitely makes a difference, and is cheap, so don't forget to use it if you need the boost. Also, remember that you can start skilling up 10 levels below the recipe cap, but can't skill up on a break until 5 levels below the cap (which doesn't appear to be affected by anything other than the cold hard true difference between the cap and your level).

I have never seen any clear testing to validate the claim of direction, moon phase, and day of the week affecting the results of my synthesis.

The only factor that I have ever seen to be true is the crafting tiers.

It's all superstition. If facing a direction, watching the moon phase, or waiting for a specific day affects your results, no one has been able to figure out the correct relationship. You're just as likely to be hurting your results as helping them by following this religion.

As per skill up rate, yeah I have never seen a difference. As for moon phase and day of the week, it certainly makes a difference... and here is the kicker... what your trying to craft. In my own experience, 99 cooking and atm 84 fishing the best results have always been near full moon. I never try to craft the item on the same day as the crystal I'm about to use. Don't ask me why, but I always have horrid success rate on the same days. As for facing what direction, in 7 years of crafting I've never seen a direction that favors another. But as everyone else said, nobody really have any solid proof. It just takes too dang long to level a craft and time is always and issue. I have to go to bed in an hour, am I going to wait 4 just so I can get a good day... Probably not. Do what the rest of us do, hit the crystal, hit the mats, cross your fingers and count it lucky you got a skill up.
