I still need contributions when you guys can get em to me!

Edit: Update 04/04/05
-Fixed up some sections with better synths.
-Added Adept Rank (80-90) synths.

Edit: Update 4/4/05 Updated again 4/4/05
-Fixed the sections i said i fixed but weren't up.
-Added a few more synths.

Edit: Update 5/9/05
- re-wrote 80-90 and added a few synths here and there
- Darksteel picks reccomended up to lvl 70, rather than 73
- Start Karimata Arrowheads at 68 w/ GP items, 70 w/o.

Can someone please add this to the list of Tradeskill Guides?

Hey, great guide for the most part!! It's nice to finally see a NEW guide to smithing, since things have changed sooo much Definately rate ups, but I just wanted to give my 2 cents without creating my own guide so here goes:

1. Juji Shuriken should definately be made from 40-44, NOT iron subligars. Juji shuriken should sell regularly( they did for me, even though there weren't any for sale up for about a week, the ninjas and such must be checking, because mine sold fairly quickly) and even if it's a 2k loss per stack, (I made a 3k profit per stack on Bismarck), you should be doing better than the subligars. They are about a 1k loss per synth.

12 synths with Shuriken yields 4 stacks, 4x2k loss = 8k loss
12 synths with subligar is 12x1k loss = 12k loss. That's a worst case scenario with the shuriken too.

AND their STACKABLE, who doesn't love stackable items?? They're rare in smithing ><

Good luck!! again, great guide, I will be using it for the higher levels.

I'll change the Reccommendation from Subligar to Juji Shuriken though. Thanks.

Well, I concur with that guide for the most part, with a few notes. 1stly, 55 to Nodowa (depends on your risk taking) can be done with Darksteel Bolt Heads. Less loss than breastplate on my server. Also, as a 81.1+1 smith, I feel compelled to add a bit more.
On my server, Bastard Swords are sold for profit, so use them to level instead of Karimata Arrowheads when you can, but do NOT flood the market or youll lose money. For 79+, it hurts... so bad... I am currently doing Darksteel Nodowa. I used a few Zweihandlers to get to 81, theyre slight profit on my server instead of the loss of DS nodowa. The DS nodowa sell for 3k to NPC...owies. I desynth and hope to get lucky. After DS nodowa I plan diversify my leveling and use about five different synths (mainly Thick Set) to level further since theyre all decent weapons/armor that sell for about breakeven on AH, though quite slowly. So I wont be getting past the 80s for a while... I also suggest getting the mitts and apron by the time you finish your Karimata Arrowheads. I have my mitts, and wish I had apron (45k/100k) Good luck.

ok, I will add my personal experience to this. As to 22-26, Spathas are a good alternate. 3 bronze ingots + lizard skin + fire, if you buy the bronze at the guild or make it these are cheap to synth.

For 26-33, I would recommend doing war picks earlier. They sell for 3.5K each to the Sandoria smithing guild(note only the one in Sandoria).

For 52-57 if darksteel sheets are not an option, or 55-57 I would recommend gauntlets over breastplates. the recipe is 2 iron sheets + 2 leather gloves(cheap from armor NPC in South Sandy) and they sell for 3K+ to the Bastok Smithing guild(again note, bastok guild only).

I would recommend getting the apron and gloves as soon as possible. I find it is much easier to bazaar items wearing them, and they come in a lot of use. I started karimata arrowheads at 72.1, and with my guild gear and advanced support I had maybe 2 breaks and it is much easier to do then darksteel picks. Darksteel picks have a much higher resell cost but they require a lot more capital to do a stack of synths. karimata arrowheads cost little to make but have a low resell cost.

Either way, not a bad guide.

Excellent guide. I especially like the section on desynthesis. I didn't know about the claymore desynthesis. I may have to try that in about 15 levels or so.

Woot! I got from level 3-10 smithing last night on a whim (costing me 60-70k...). I'm planning on taking it to 100. On my server though, unlike what your guide says, tin ingots are a big loss since they sell to the AH for 1k a stack, not sure how much to npc, can't be much.

4000 Crystal + 12x4x30 gil Ore = 5440
                            -1000
                               4440 gil loss :(

I'll go check if there's anything better, but actually, it's not that bad. It's just working it out which is depressing.

Interesting. I might be able to get smithing past 25 now.

I made Makibishi from 22-23 because Iron Ingots are 30k-32k/stack while Iron Scales were selling at 23k/stack. To get from 23-25 I synthed Iron Swords and sold them in Bastok for 7-8k/each. It took a while to sell, but Alchemists use Iron Swords to make Fire Swords which is a guild test item. It is alot higher risk than making Spathas though.

You math is slightly off though.

48 Iron Ore * 500gil (from AH) = 24k.
If like on my server fire crystals = 4k then Iron Ingots are 28k to make.

However,
48 Iron Ore * 675 (from guild) = 32.4k then Iron Ingots cost 36.4k to make.

So how do you make Iron Ingots for 20k cost?

Probably desynthing leather belts. Personally, I hate doing this because it takes FOREVER to get enough iron ingots to do anything. The sheep leather pays for the belts, sure, but in my case, I'd rather make something else I can sell for like 30k profit and just buy the ingots. Sometimes it's taken me 2-3 stacks of lightning crystals just to get 10 iron ingots. Desynthing can be very fickle. :(

I, personally, Mine for my Iron Ores when I'm doing Ingots.
Yeah, it can take a while sometimes, but if there's people in Zeruhn mining for Zinc (like the last time I was in there) It can be...beneficial to offer trades (I usually went one for one). The tin and copper I'd synth into Bronze and the Zinc I didn't trade away went into levelling up my Goldsmithing (with the copper I was mining up). Pebble's, of course, get tossed.

Basically - you can either shell out for the ores to make ingots, or shell out for ingots, or spend the time mining. I'm mining. That may change if/when I hit Darksteel (I don't know if I want to fight the gilsellers in Gusgen...) but hell, that'll be a bit yet, I think :)

This is one of the best smithing guide's I've seen.

I also do a lot of my own mining. Zeruhn seems far too crowded on my server. I tend to hit Yughott Grotto a lot. It truly helps to also have goldsmithing leveled up to about lvl 20. Making your own iron and silver ingots while out mining helps a bunch.

On a side note, I made Bilbo's much earlier than 28 (I think I started around 24-25, of course using adv. synth support). Turns out Bilbo's took me all the way up from there, and I was actually able to turn around a very slight profit. I had grown a couple stacks of fire crystals, mined for all of my iron and the majority of my silver ore's, then sold the Bilbo's for 5-6k in either San D'Oria or Bastok's Auction House.

I'll be updating it and probably writing the next section (80-90) tommorow or friday.

Thanks for all the info of different synths, i wrote this from 5pm -> 11pm in one night all from memory and just looking at the list at mystery tour.

Remember i'm on ASURA, so chances are you probably have a better economy. If you want me to add synthes in place of others i'll look into it.

Thanks for the rateups ^^.

Put me in the list of usefull threads! :D

Any other better routes from 52-56 other than breastplates?

Iron Sheetx4
Sheep leatherx2

per synth is not my idea of fun :)

I'm doing darksteel sheets to 55 whenever my buyer has enough room to actually buy them from me.

EDIT:

Darksteel Bolt Heads look like a possible profit synth on my server. I'll check - thanks

Edit 2:

DST Bolt heads cap at 62 -- so it might be a bad idea to start them at 52. Although Kyofu looks like a pretty good alternative to Breastplates.

Tin Ingot
Iron Sheet
Shinobi-Gatana

This is a far cheaper synth on my server than Breastplates - although desynthing leather belts could work - this is more for the power leveler. Shinobi-Gatana's are only 3100 at the Tenshendo in bastok and 2500-3000 in Norg. Not too shabby if you ask me, especially if you just need a bridge synth. (Tin ingots are cheap as hell and Iron Sheet (1) is better than burning 4 per synth)

I posted a fair alternative 52-57 higher in the thread Reft:

For 52-57 if darksteel sheets are not an option, or 55-57 I would recommend gauntlets over breastplates. the recipe is 2 iron sheets + 2 leather gloves(cheap from armor NPC in South Sandy) and they sell for 3K+ to the Bastok Smithing guild (bastok guild only).

Well I started levelling smithing by this guide so far, and I'm only 15 at the moment, but when I finish levelling my monk subjob to level 20 I'm going to pour about a million gil into smithing, hopefully I'll get to a point after 1-2 million where I'm making more with it than the 100k I can make a day with cooking.
I plan to just make ingots into sheets from 15-22 as I don't like the idea of camping the AH and Guild for ore. Should make even more money that way since ingot stacks are about 33k and the sheets are about 44k.

0_o i think i screwed up when i updated, i'm looking at the .txt and its radically different than the .html >_>

the 79->90 path i actually went online and looked at each synth, how available the ingredients were, and how much they sell for.

Note how in the guide and in this post i'm asking for alterative suggestions to anything you guys don't like or i don't have listed.

So if you're gonna complain about my guide have the decency to suggest something else, like a few others in this post.

Btw- i'm updating the guide again right now.

Quote:
For 52-57 if darksteel sheets are not an option

you'd figure at lvl 52 people would have the resources needed to do darksteel sheets 1 stack at a time... otherwise they're mindlessly powerlvling, and this guide isn't for mindless power lvlers.

Gourry -

Darksteel sheets are certainly an option - selling them is what I fear. Since I burn about 240K in actually making the ingots, making them into sheets and not having them sell would hurt. So, I patiently wait for my buyer to keep synthing them until I can re-sell him some more.

But I will try gauntlets and Kyofu.

Thank You :)

Reft they sell a few stacks per day on asura >_>

Like i said, if you don't powerlvl mindlessly 45->55 is an *insanely* easy step. Its possible to do it all in one day if you have the resources, but that would be incredibly stupid as you'd never pwn them all off at once.

Alot of people do what you do, make stacks 1 or 2 at a time, and do another synth on the side (or they should)

I did what you did, i found someone who needed an assload of sheets and met his demands. Took me about 2 weeks to do 52->55.

for 79-90 I also disagree with the path, but maybe our server prices are different.

On my server, absolutely everything is a ridiculous unbelievable disgusting painful gut wrenching heartbreaking soul shattering loss.

Yesterday I bought 1 stack of Darksteel Sheets (250k) 1 stack of Silk Threads (21k) and 1 stack of Fire Crystals (4k). Total 275k.

I made 12 Darksteel Nodowa. Got 0.2 total, sold results back to NPC for 36k total.

Yes! Only 1.2 million per level at this rate!

Seriosuly, there's nothing better using the traditional route. Darksteel Nodowa give awful skillup rate. I found that Thick Sollerets tend to give quick skillups, but they're still a loss of about 35k / synth at my level. Rising Sun is about break even but it doesn't sell so often.

Right now I'm sitting at 81+2. With advanced support that puts me at 86, 4 away from cap of Adaman Ingots. Ingots tend to give pretty quick skillups, let's say I need to make 3 stacks of Adaman Ingots per level. And being 4 under cap, let's say I lose about 8% of all Adaman Ores I use (reasonable estimate. Not conservative, but definitely reasonable). 3 stacks of ingots is 36 ingots which requires 108 ores. If I lose 8% of those, that's about 8.64 Adaman Ores lost. They go about 70k / ore on my server, so that's about 604,800G / level lost. WAAAAYYY better than anything else.

Keep in mind, however, that this is only a worst case scenario. After just 1 level, my break rate would decrease. After 1 more level, it would decrease more. Just me, but i'll probably be starting Adaman Ingots way sooner than suggested.

When I said "if darksteel sheets are not an option", I meant if they sell for less then the ingot or if they sell slowly. Darksteel sheets are used less and generally sell slower, particularly if the person is not power lvling and doesn't have the capital to do a stack and is selling them singlely. However keep in mind servers vary, and it is possible that the sheets sell lower then the ingots on some servers.

Also keep in mind, the gauntlets are cheap if you make or desynth the iron and they sell for around 3K(been a while) to the Bastok smithing guild, but only Bastok not the Sandoria one. So either way they are better then breastplates for 55-57.

As to 79-90, I agree and disagree with the guide. On Ragnorak the base darksteel leggins and mufflers are never available. So If I decide to do the thick armor(which i will probably will) I will have to make my own or contract a smith at that stage to do it for skill then sell it directly to me. With guild gear and advanced support, I have seen people start adaman as early as 83, so it is really not unreasonable if you are willing to take the risk.

There are a few other options. Colossal Axe comes to mind, if you camp the AH and buy all the gigant axes you can get your hands on this could be a viable synth. it is simply Gigant axe + steel ingot + fire, caps at 88. On my server the NQ is about breakeven or 1-2 profit/loss(it flucuates, a lot) while the HQ sells for 160K(odds of HQ while skiling are low but hey i've done it twice with karimata arrowheads). The gigant axe also isn't impossible to get if you have a high lvl job. It comes from the Crawlers nest chest, and chest keys are very easy to get.

edit: spelling

The only thing i can see you have added on top of my FAQ is the calculations if you brought the raw materials, the items you need to hand it to lvl rank and the Guild Point info...

When using other ppl hard work.. Please ask!!!!!

To be honest... I looked at the 2 guides, and I see similarities... but at the same time, he has added -MANY- different synths.

i added quite a few synths... and 4/5 times i got the synths from my guide DIRECTLY from FFRecipe and Mystery tour, and then checked online. Like WHOAMG! SIMILARITIES! Because that is the best way to lvl... however i offered MANY MANY different paths to lvling up rather than yours (which i see is updated).

I added the guild section and the desynth section just because i wanted my guide to have as much stuff in it as possible.

If you'll notice, i added credit for all the guides on allakazham because i refernced them a few times, however if you yourself want SPECIAL recognition, then no.

Seriously though, if you want credit get the hell outta my thread. Read my ENTIRE guide. i'll post some similarities right here if you want.

your guide:
Lvl 20 Iron Ingots
Lvl 22 Iron Sheet
Lvl 25 Spatha
Lvl 28 Bilbo
Lvl 29 Iron Mask

my guide:
Paktong Ingot (15-20)
Iron Ingot(15-20
Iron Sheet(20-22)
Makibishi(22-23)- with added info on how to not lose money
Iron Scales(22-26) - with added info on how to not lose money
Bilbo(23/24-28)
Iron Mask(26-29)
Iron Chain(26-30) - info, lose money, not, etc

AND THAT IS ONLY ONE STAGE

jesus christ man, i'm not gonna copy paste sh*t, hell i BARELY ever looked at your guide because frankly its not that good. Why do you think i wrote a new one? Yours gives ONE route and like 1 alternative for 1 stage. I however give alternatives for almost EVERY stage past 20.

Look at the darksteel stage, 2 COMPLETELY different routes for two COMPLETELY different mindsets.

However i have to admit my 66-73 stage is the same, i mean otherwise i'd have to put synths in that cost 3x as much for the same skillup. how stupid am i! </sarcasm>

and seriously if you're gonna comment after about the similarities in 79-90, go look at the recipe list, i offered alternatives as i saw them AND its still a work in progress.

Hm :S I'd levelled on Iron Subligar to 45. Didn't want to skill up on Darksteel Ingots because that's an 18k+ synth in Pandemonium ><

So what I did was set HP in Norg.

Teleport-Altep, run to Korroloka, Escape unto Bastok. Bought a 6 stacks of Bomb Ash and 2 stacks of Fire Crystals, got Advanced smithing support. Warped back to Norg, bought Iron Sand from the NPC, and synthed Steel Ingots o.o which caps at 54

Sure I broke a ton of synths with a 9-level gap, but... at least didn't have to play the AH game on anything other than the crystals^^;

Just an FYI from a woodworker's perspective. Elm Logs sell for 7k each since that is slightly under the NPC price of Tavnazia. The price of Elm Logs is set by the demand in Bast Parchment not Elm Lumber. If your Woodworker friend can HQ3 with Lumberjack then it is about 1800 each which is about 100 less than the Woodworking guild sells sometimes.

If you do have a high level Woodworking friend though you might get them to desynth some Fastwater Rods or Elm Staffs if you can get them for about 1k each or less. Not sure about the break figures on this though. Fastwater Rods will net you either Elm Lumber or Wool Thread which on my server is 20-22k/stack.

I'd like to say that ToanP is full of bulvine fecies and this is one of the best guides I've seen for blacksmithing. There are quite a few alternatives that I wish I had thaught of when I was lvling. I would have saved a ton following this guide. ToanP also has not updated his guide very well... It still states rusty "caps can be sold back at 2.6k making you a small profit" hahaha

A tip for desynthers you might want to add: with 5 Tsahyan Masks, 42 Tarutaru stools (Overwhelming desynth/lightning energy), and 67 skill, I can desynth darksteel quite reliably to lvl with, thus averting the huge loss that Darksteel picks would run with the prices of darksteel these days. (estimated 2 mil+ for 66-73)

you can also get tons of iron this way, so for those who are making Nodawa, you can save some gil with desynthing as well.

Keep up the good work Gourry!

Although I appreciate people who take the time to gather the info for a guide....really what 2 guides aren't very similar? Usually there are only certain synths at any given stage that are worth doing for skill ups. It's not hard to look at a recipe list and see what those synths are. All these "guides" provide is some feedback and promote discusson, which is a good thing. I hardly see these "guides" as anything more than a consolodated place to put synthing recipes for skill, editing out those synths that are not worthwhile doing. Not very hard to do.

Just a note regarding Tama-Hagane (for Karimata Arrowheads): Tenshodo shops work as guilds, i.e. the prices are not based on fame, but rather stock and demand. So, if noone else is working on those arrowheads, you'll probably find them for 4k.

At least, as far as I can tell the prices are like guilds - my Tenshodo fame is 4, and the price is the same as it was when I checked a long time ago with lower Tenshodo fame.

My experience today. After leveling to 44 off of Iron Uglygar, that was about 3-3.5k lost a syth not that bad. I can sell with max fame to Blacksmith in Bastok for 3.5k. Thinking it wouldn’t make that much a difference I sent some to my mule to sell but he was getting the price of 2.5. of course I shipped them back to my main.

At 44 started Claymores on my server they do at least 5k loss per syth no way around it. All NP’c I checked buy for 2k.

Here is an alternate that may work from 45-53.

Gorget – Fire + Leather Sheet(1.5k each[max]) + Iron Sheet(3.7k each[max]) = 5.5k per syth.

Was running late for work, my main still in the mighty nation of San D’oria so I shipped a Gorget to see the cost my mule with no fame. The guild would buy the Gorget for 2.5k. That would only be 3k lost on my server with MAX cost of materials. If the patter holds like the Iron Subligar, I could sell for 3.5k with 2k Max lost.

So ideally if you bought the materials for minimum price or farmed the sheep skin to make the leather your self you can possibly go this route for almost no lost.

WARNING: Long post.

Just to warn you Gourry, your guide is pretty solid, but I'm gonna be pretty blunt in my post. Hope you don't take offense, that's just how I am.

The adept 80-90 section really depends on server.

Also if you take ANY craft past 60 you will realize just how BAD it is to synthesize armor.

I mean, it takes 36-48 synths for ONE freaking level. Now imagine how long it will take to sell 36-48 pieces of Thick mufflers. (How many lv69+ WAR/DRK/BST are on *your* server?)

Now multiply that by 7 levels.

Thick mufflers are about 30k loss on my server.

Celata's even worse, maybe 50k loss. Each.

I guess much of your guide assumes time isn't as important as gil. I mean, who the hell synths Bastard swords? I mean you can lose 75k in one synth fail. then try making 36 of these and waiting for them to AH. lol. One sells once a week on my server. Sure it might be profit, but who the hell can wait that long? It is my honest opinion that the best route is through NPCable goods, cutting your losses because you WILL make the money back later on. Honest to god truth. However you are still in the 60s so maybe you don't understand how it works.

I am definately not an advocate of Darksteel Nodowa, but in reality, there simply isn't much better.

Darksteel Nodowa (83) --- Earth Crystal + Darksteel Sheet + Silk Thread --- Vendor for 4,000G norg guild

Darksteel Sheet 26,000G + Silk thread 2,000G = 28,000G - 4,000G = 24,000G loss each x 36 - 48 = 864,000G - 1,152,000G loss per level. However, (following some goldsmithing routes) you CAN desynth these. It's not *that* great but it does beat vendoring them. the problem is you need a HQ2 to get the Darksteel ingot back. HQ1 is still silk thread >< In about 12 Nodowas I can get maybe 2 or 3 darksteel (if im lucky) so that beats vendoring them.

83+ I am still keeping to myself until i get there :P

Some other things to add to the guide:

Tama-gahane is 4690G in Norg. They stock 100 each. (8 stacks + 4) at the max. I know because I did a sh*tLOAD of karimata arrowheads. (lol)

Steel Ingots are 3,590G in Mhaura at the lowest.

Nodowas vendor to Norg guilds.

Iron subligars vendor to Bastokan Guild for more than NPC price.
Iron mittens and padded armor also vendor to bastok guild.

War picks vendor to Sandoria guild for 3,510G at the lowest. I've seen almost 5k right after a server maintenance.

Guild prices depend on stock, the more they have the cheaper they will sell AND buy from you. So if you want to make the MOST money, sell right after a maintenance.

Kunai (Jeuno tenshodo) desynths to Steel ingot. Good way to get lizard skins, if you need them.

Mastersmith anvil gives Moghancement: Smithing.

It would also help if you made Guides for cloth, leather, wood, gold, and alchemy (as smithing uses all of these) with a smithing background in mind (changes some things). If you want my help (i already have all of this written up) hit me a line @ dokihara@gmail.com

cheers.

I can see your point, yeah i'm still trying to figure out the best approach to my 66-73 leap so i'm not quite up as high as you.

However i can see where you're coming from, the guide will be updated and i'll throw Darksteel Nodowa and Adaman in there for the full step more or less. After 90 x.x that might take some time and looking into, probably after i get to around 80.

but yeah thanks for the perspective, now THAT post helps, unlike your earlier post which said "I highly highly disagree with your 79+ path." which tells me absolutely nothing about the mindset of a higher lvl crafter.

ANYWAY, yeah, i thank you again. I may do a Jack-of-all-trades guide eventually. Not alot of time to do much now with school, drama, job, friends, >_> just got my license. I actually haven't played FFXI in a week or so.

anyway i'll catch you all latars.

With Max fame in Sandy, it sells back to the NPC for ~1500. ><

currently at a little above 44 smithing, so I will try either the steel finger guantlets, or the gorget. DS scares me right now >.>

bump and suggestion for addition:

for those as scared as DS as I am, or if it is not a profit on your server

48-54: Steel Ingots
Fire Crystal + Bomb Ash x4, Iron Sand x4
Bomb Ash can be obtained from Olaf in Bastok Metalworks (Smithing Guild).
Iron Sand can be obtained from Vuliaie in Norg (Sitting on a barge near the HP Crystal)

The Iron sand is not stackable, so I took a few (6-10) stacks of Bomb Ash, and traveled to Norg. Crafting on Firesday and setting HP in Norg (warping once you get Guild Support) helped this be a profitable synth.

Cost to make a Steel Ingot is ~4k, not including crystal and travel.

Maybe you could add that it is possible to start Karimata arrowheads at 70, that's what I did, Synthed on Full moon lights/wind day and advanced support(no smithing gear), worked out better than the picks all the way to 73..
