Where did you get that they are meant to be able to dual wield?
This is from the description on the offical site.
Quote:
As such, there are practitioners who marry sword with shield, seeking to defend their fellow companions. Others opt for an empty off hand, choosing instead to focus entirely on their sword arm.

Dual wielding will probably be class specific to newer classes later on.
They may even do it like the PGL, where it is a set of 2 1hand weapons, rather than 2 individual ones.

Thanks Azimov, that is something I read months ago so now wonder I forgot. Reason I believed they did as the game told me I "cant yet" so of coarse I came up with the conclusion that they can dual wield. A friend of mine wanted to play a traditional rogue type class so I can tell him he just can do it without the 2nd dagger.

When you are on the offhand slot daggers show up as equippable. when you try to equip them you get a message saying you can't do that because you don't have the appropriate skill or are on the wrong job.

Whether that's for another class later on, or for gladiator, the coding is there.

The thing that got me first trying was that the Weathered Gladius and Bronze Dagger both display a note at the top of their item details page that it is for main hand or off hand.

So, repeating what the above poster said, the coding is already there. Also, the items are already flagged as main/off.

Don't glads get an ambidexterity skill? Maybe you need that to equip an offhand weapon.

Ambidexterity lowers the TP required for your shield skills.

The class is a gladiator, obviously taken from the Roman days of dueling and fighting in an arena. Look at the quests we do for our class ...

I wouldn't doubt to see 2H and Dual Wield skills at some point on this class. It wouldn't be a stretch in the slightest. As for when, or if it happens, who knows.

Gladiator simply means Swordsman.

And,

No, it's nothing like a "Roman Gladiator", Roman Gladiators didn't specialize in the sword, they specialized in any combat they were forced to use which generally equated picking up a gladius (only to be mowed down quickly in most cases) as it was the favored arm of the era.

Originally, SE wanted to release the class 'Fencer' but decided to go with Gladiator, to me they just miffed up by not simply doing Knight or Paladin.

Gladiator is bleh.

Ambidexterity lowers the TP required for second hand skills, it's not shield specific.

Well dual wielding still seems like a possible alternative to shield for Gladiator.. since shield doesn't provide the player a full class when equipped but a sub-class..

Equipping a shield gives access to the "Sentinel" sub-class..
A sword on offhand would then give access and ability to gain SP for a say.. "Swordmaster" sub-class..

It does make sense, doesn't it..?

I had a similar question a few days ago but doing a little searching found the answer readily enough... there is no dual-wield currently available in the game.

You are able to select certain weapons off of the menu for the off-hand slot (as it was recently patched that only items equippable in that slot would show up when choosing an item off the list) and if you look at the top of the inventory window it will say either [main hand], [off-hand], or [main hand * off-hand] at the top when looking at certain weapons.

Obviously the intention for there to be off-hand weapons is there. There just isn't a class/class ability in the game that allows for it yet. Whether this will be implemented later under Gladiator (as they are the sword/dagger class and the other DoW classes all use two-handed weapons it would make sense) or if it's something that they're saving for the Jobs that are being implemented for high level players (possibly seeing NIN come out again) is up in the air.

The facts are: it's not in the game -at the moment- and the distinction of what is a main hand and what is an off-hand weapon is already there in the game. We're just waiting for the feature to be implemented.

It'd certainly be nice for Gladiators to have an option other than just sword and shield, considering that there is literally NO drawback to not using a shield and one of the most useful abilities Gladiators have (phalanx) relies on it.

WAR in FFXI could be either a dps or a tanking class. GLA in FFXIV is either a tank or a... well, an off-tank.

They have intentions of introducing a "Scout"-style class, and it has been said they are considering removing daggers from Gladiators.

So no, Gladiators won't be able to dual-wield, but eventually someone will. You'll all get your THFs & NINs.
