How excited are you for the Story?Follow

I have to admit, in general I'm not that much into the story aspect of an MMO. I've tried in the past to get into it more with recent titles like WoW and Rift. I know a lot of talented people spend a lot of time writing and rewriting stuff for our enjoyment but aside from the use of a little in-game cut scene or some good voiceover work, I'm really not that interested it blocks of text. I tend to want to get right to the next thing that continues to advance me XP wise.

So I just prefaced all that so you know my stance and also to let the community know that for some reason I'm much more excited about story for SWTOR. I think its because of the active dialog system we are used to with Bioware, taken to another level with party members being able to participate and "direct" the path of the conversation. To me, I will be living the story now and not just needing to click a series of sentences if/when its my turn because the story will be told through me.

How well done will it be? Who knows? And if I find that general paths will take you to the same place over and over again, maybe I won't care as much anymore. But from what I've seen and read so far it looks like it will be important and intriguing... keeping my fingers crossed.

How about you... How excited are you for story elements and the voiced over conversational story telling?

I'll see if I can start a poll.

Later all and welcome!

Very.

I have been waiting for the conclusion of KOTOR for years.

For those who are interested in this game, go and play KOTOR 1 and KOTOR 2. But make sure you have the fan made patch for KOTOR 2, because the original version was released incomplete (the files were on the disk, they just got forced to rush it out in time for Xmas before it was compiled).

Well, the thing is about Rift and WoW, you really have to go out of your way to see the big stories. Sure you can read the quests, but its so easy to simply skip quests and rush things.

This game seems to force you into the story, without much difficulty. Sucks for all those people who play their games with the sound off (I know quite a few to be honest.) The only other game that more often forces you into the story is Final Fantasy 11. That game was too grind heavy, but the story was epic!

but yeah... I cant wait for this game!

I'm very excited as well about the story of SW:ToR. When we are forced to read the same, monotone, boring, quest text for each quest, it really takes gets boring. So far no MMO has been able to tell me a story that I was completely in to. It's an aspect that has been missing since the dawn in the MMO IMO.

Very exciting!

Miric, the problem I find with MMO storylines is that either you have to wait too long to progress to the next section (be it from updates/leveling up/farming items/other), or that you get frustrated because you can't progress because the missions are tough. (FFXI's Chains of Promathia used to be a prime example of this, the missions were at one point VERY hard and a lot of people simply gave up because of it).

Hopefully Bioware will find a happy medium... although I'm not sure how they can do it.

VERY excited. Story is why you play Bioware games--there are plenty of games that do cover-based combat and RPG better (debatable of course), but NOBODY does story better than Bioware.

The simple fact that some (hopefully the majority or all) of the story portions of the game are done with voice acting and dark side/light side conversational options and outcomes will bring a huge change to MMO story telling.

I am very excited about the story in SWTOR. As for me what makes a game fantastic to play has always been the storyline and most BioWare games are built on this and so combining a good story with those all important decisions that you will inevitable face in the game with the ability to play it online as an MMO with your friends etc and it just being Star Wars is by far a fantastic combination and I can’t wait to play.

Furthermore, I will be play all the classes eventually, both republic and empire classes, as that's what BioWare wants its gamers to do and like I’ve said above the best part of a game for me is the story so having the ability to play out all these different stories and situations is a must.

However, I intend to play a Jedi Consular first and max that out before I move on to the next. Why a Jedi Consular? I suppose for me it reflects the kind of story I want to play and the story that you really don’t get to see much which is what’s going behind the curtain to prevent or cause these events while the main characters like you see in the movies are fighting the Sith. By this I mean the diplomacy the espionage etc that the Jedi also do in the name of The Republic and The People, so I want to see where the story behind the curtain will take me and that doesn’t mean it won’t be at the forefront of the battle just knowing what’s going on to cause this.

From the event game plays it seems the Story will be epic. :) I'm really looking forward to rolling all 8 classes, and perhaps reroll them for a different path.

Yeah I totally agree with you there Celwin, I really like the idea of playing both sides and the added bonus of playing the baddies if you will :D. It's going to be certainly epic :).

The different story for each class definitely works for me.

I always like playing alts to do things differently and now that will be the norm....

Smuggler/Gunslinger to start though....

Not very much. I hope that every advancement doesn't involve a story on rails and inescapable cutscenes. I much prefer the open world with options as to where I want to go and how I want to do it. . like WoW pre-cataclysm.

Considering one of the things they're really pushing is exploration, I do think that you have the option of going off the rails whenever you like.

Well so far there are something like 17 worlds and the map making developers blog mentioned that some of these worlds will be near the size of 5-6 modern MMO zones. I imagine that there will be no shortage of exploration material. I hope the include some puzzles and hidden features throughout the game. Granted it's hard to have any hidden material when everyone just looks up the answer to something online :P.

I'm very excited at the possibilities for the story arcs within the game. As far as the over all story, I don't expect to be amazed much. For one thing, we know how it turns out in the end, and for another, MMOs tend to have a long life span, so I imagine that the larger story is going to move quite slowly.

Just the fact that companions will be fleshed out and personal choices will matter years down the road is a very cool (and scary) proposition, however.
