Mage Leveling Build (Level 40ish)Follow

My mage is hovering right around level 40 right now, and since I'm fairly new to the game and this is my first toon, I've been playing with one of the pre-packaged roles. I can't recall what it's actually called, but it looks something like this (from pure memory).

Here's the problem: my pet is officially worthless. Not only can he no longer hold agro on a single mob, but if I want to engage multiple mobs, he dies too quickly while I deal with the other one, and I end up tanking. I've taken to using him more as a distraction than as an actual source of damage/tanking. This means that I have had to change up my standard spell rotation and begin combat with an Icicle just to slow the mobs, then move in to the standard building electrified debuffs, Ice Shear, insta-crit Icicle.

While this has generally solved the problem I had due to lack of a pet tank, I still feel like this build has a bunch of wasted points in it, especially in the Pyromancer tree. I haven't figured out yet how to incorporate the Improved Fire Blast into my spell rotation, and I don't really use any of that tree's abilities past Burning Intellect. What I'd really like is a build that focuses more on either the Stormcaller or Pyromancer tree individually (although being able to slow enemies with frost spells is sure handy). Plus, the Elementalist tree is completely wasted without the pet; I'd like to replace that with something else with more utility.

TL:DR: I need a non-pet mage leveling build around level 40, and I'm too dumb to make one on my own.

ok first off, a build like that is more for dungeon runs where ur not gonna be hit at all. when i was lvling i went with something along the lines of this(edit for current lvl, id recommend dropping points in lock first). as for a build with no pet, i have absolutely no clue how good it would be at lower lvls but i use this for soloing. with a healing sigil with healing greaters, and possibly a healing trinket, ur actually quite durable. for that build, id start with the points in chloro so u atleast self heal off of everything u do. it will also force circle of life to stay up constantly so bloom with have a VERY high chance of crit healing u. bloom comes in handy, and in an *************** situation, neddras essence and shadow life can easily save ur ***.

What's the spell rotation for a build like that? From a quick glance, I'd guess something along the lines of Radiant Spores > Wither > Dark Touch > Leech Life > spam Void Bolt.

spell rotation is quite simple. radiant spores(if u even need it), life leech, dark touch, withering vine, defile. then spam a handy macro, see below.

#show void bolt
suppressmacrofailures
cast draining bolt
cast void bolt

the macro will feed u some extra hp every time draining bolt comes up, namely, every half a minute

For the record, I caved on the "no pet" requirement and went with this necro/lock build. It's so much easier than soloing as Stormcaller/Pyro, I almost feel like I'm cheating somehow.

Thanks again for the help!

i used necro/lock myself for a LONG time. i only found one problem with it. if u wanted to pull more than one enemy, u had to hit em all with grave rot, and then manually hit the skel knights aoe taunt, which doesnt work without deathly calling on the enemies. which also means, u have initial aggro. its because of that i then switched to a high point ele build. the tank pet there doesnt need anything to aoe taunt
