RIFT's first State of the Game address floods players with news of the future

""Another cool concept is the idea of solo and small-group instances which will fall under the label "The Chronicles of Telara." These will help players get a quick instance fix if the queue for regular instances is too long, but even more than that, Chronicles instances are designed to give players a much better feel for the game's major characters and stories. Epic settings, places you normally wouldn't get to see, fighting alongside and against key characters are all aspects of these instances.""

I really look forward to the system that allows for experience to be used after level 50 for character growth and customization. The simple fact that experience at max level can still be utilized makes me eager to see what alo they have in store for us. I have to give props to Trion, they are winning with their updates and community openess.

I also attended the State of the Game address with Scott Hartsman: http://rift.zam.com/story.html?story=27030

The Chronicles of Telara instances definitely do sound interesting. Hartsman emphasized they will focus greatly on the game's story. He really just wants them to be a cool addition to the game.

This caught my eye

""It will be a setting you normally won't see,” he said, noting that the first one takes place in Hammerknell.""

1.4?? He did say if you look at the mmorpg.com transcript they had these were on the short to medium time table. I mean we already uncovered two new zones obviously in the works soooo

The solo stuff and dynamic events unfolding sounds so awesome. I've put so much feedback on various forums, blogs, and in-game feedback system about creating more dynamic solo or small party content and I'm so glad Trion is going to give it a shot.

Later.

2 things i'd like to see:

1. opposite to pvp rifts, i would like to see active co-op rifts where both factions could join in for the same goals. or even competitive rifts, both sides fighting a rift(s) and whoever causes more trouble gets a bonus.

2. invasion porting and focal points. watching a boss spawn half way across the map is booty, by the time you get there he's dead. when an invasion happens you could have a pop up to enter one of the public raid groups, then an NPC could port you to the action. or something like that, maybe you click a shard and it brings you somewhere.

I don't love the idea of cross-server LFG, but apart from that this is all great stuff. As someone who can't/won't fit raiding into her schedule, content-on-demand for when and however long I can play is exactly what I want in an MMO. Traditionally that's meant PVP, which I did come to enjoy in WoW but more by necessity than genuine interest. Having other options is the bee's knees. I think they're moving in good directions.

I will find it pretty interesting to see if Trion can bring AA back into the main stream. I mean doing anything like WoW has earned some serious hatred because apparently showing you can do it better then Blizzard is a bad thing to some people.

So why not take the EQ approach. I mean this is where some of that GW2 is from also. Solo/Duo/Party instances in GW2 sound identical to AA.

That interview talked about Planar Attunement. In addition, to quote:

If that's not EQ style AA points, I don't know what else it would be.

Sounds like Merit Points from FFXI too... post cap XP used to make your existing abilities better or something... like maybe an Air attunement bonus would make Path of the Wind do more dmg or w/e.

Basically that's exactly what AA is. FFXI had a version of that system.

In case you are wondering:

http://everquest.allakhazam.com/wiki/eq:AA

The alternative advancement system is a non-level-based advancement options for those level 51 and above. It was originally one of the features of EverQuest: Shadows of Luclin.

http://everquest.allakhazam.com/wiki/EQ:Alternate_Advancement_-_General
http://everquest.allakhazam.com/wiki/EQ:Alternate_Advancement_-_Archetype
http://everquest.allakhazam.com/wiki/EQ:Alternate_Advancement_-_Class

There are a very large number of alternate advancement abilities, which you can buy with AA points. In order to attain these points, you can toggle your experience into the alternative advancement pool. (This can be done by hitting the default of V, or by going into the inventory window and using the 'Alt. Adv' button.) When you do this, your experience will be allocated to this pool in lieu of your "leveling" experience bar. Switching between the two pools will not cause you to lose experience and experience loss due to death suffered by the character will always be taken from the "Leveling" experience pool, and will never impact your alternative advancement pool.

The AA window is reached through the inventory window. Every class has their AA's separated in to three tabs, the general tab that all classes share, the archetype tab which each archetype (fighter, caster, priest, hybrid) shares, and the class AA tab, which is specific to each class and described on their respective pages.

For a general overview on various strategies for developing your character's Alternate Advancement abilities, take a look at this guide on Alternate Advancement leveling.

If I were Trion I would take every dev I could find and put them on this. This would go over SEVERELY well and shut up the WoW clone people overnight

You can see just how major something like this will be.

Everquest 2 also has a fairly similar system of AAs now also.
