While I was looking around for some tips on Botany I happened to come across this guide on the FFXIV Core Site:

For those of us who have experimented with Botany, we all know of the Pacman face where you get to align your chop on a tree. The guide above, displays this Pacman Face with several marks placed on it.
It also offers a program (free download), that when used, will display any image you want, over anything currently on your screen. It's a very simple program, you just tell it what folder to look in for your images, and select an image from the list of images you have in that folder. You can adjust the size of the image, the placement of it on your screen, as well as the opacity level. This program is best used while in Windowed mode, as it would be very difficult to adjust your image otherwise.
I find that chopping between each red mark has resulted in far more successes. I only had a mental image before of where I should chop, and for me it consisted of 3 zones, not 5. Now whenever I see the message, "You are getting closer to the mark," I know to set my chop inside the next notch higher, or lower in regards to the image given. If I get the message "You are getting farther from the mark," I'll typically set my chop 2 notches higher or lower respectfully.
Try it out, you won't be disappointed.
