I've stated this a number of times on the general forum, but I plan on starting as Fisher in FFXIV. One of the first things I want to do when I get off the boat in Limsa Lominsa is find a good spot to sit and catch a few fish. That is, assuming I already start with a fishing rod. A well-worn hat full of lures like my grandfather used to wear would be a nice touch, too.

Who's with me?

I've been really tempted to start as either a fisher or a crafter. I think I'm actually going to be going Conjurer, but it is tempting. I hope you enjoy your open coasts and struggles against the fish.

I am also extremely tempted to start right off as a Fisher. The only thing holding me back is that I'm sure my friends would rather me play a combat class so its easier to play together.

If anything I'll work on fishing whenever I'm on alone.

I really do not plan on grouping, or killing mobs at all. Fishing is where it is at man. The only killing I will be doing is in the marketplace, and if I happen to catch a monster or something.

I will probably also be starting in Limsa and finding my way to the fishing guild. I just hope whatever the new mechanics are don't suck. I also hope fishing has the same economic value it did in ffxi.

yes, same value of fish in ffxi, but more. It would be sweet if they threw in some "Legendary" fish. Like in some games they have super rare resources, they could have a few super rare fish.

And when you catch said fish, it would become your permanent pet. Doing everything you command it to do. And not just the usual lame pet commands like follow/attack. I'm talking commands like "massage", which would give you a "relaxed" buff, making your fishing much more fruitful. Or "sing", where your fish would sing to you giving you the buff "at ease", making your fishing even better. And it doesn't stop at just self buffs. You can command Rufus(you can name your fish) to buff your friends too. "Foot Massage" would buff your friends speed.

Or how about breeding fish? You could catch a few fish and make them breed, thus producing infinite amounts of fish. And after a few hundred fish, you could buy your own pond, toss them in, and charge people to fish there. Profit!

I am going to do a lot of fishing. I plan on doing cooking and woodworking as well as this will complement nicely (if anything like XI of course).

I am planning to start as a Conjurer and maybe later work on Fisherman. My question is what exactly is the benefit of fishing? Just to catch fish and level up this skill? If you get some type of rare fish what is going to be special? I don't want to say certain classes are not as fun or not useful, just that I want to get a feeling out here.

In FFXI, certain alchemy recipes required fish, in addition to being able to cook most of the fish you found. On the official FFXIV site, it is mentioned that goldsmiths use certain fish as well.

I once had a friend in FFXI (my static's WHM, in fact) who financed most of her level 70 Blessed set by fishing. Once she got a high enough skill, she fished up a particular squid in Qufim almost nonstop for months.

I am definitely starting as a fisherman. I really enjoyed fishing in FFXI, mostly because of how relaxed it was. Fishing was also one of the more profitable crafts in FFXI so that's another reason I'm gonna go with it. I'll stick with the three consumable tradeskills; fishing, cooking, and alchemy. =P

Now that the NDA has been relaxed, I believe I can safely say that I'm in the beta, and I did start a Fisher in phase 3. You start with a fishing rod, 99 bloodworms, and a fishing hat. However, the hat comes at the expense of having no body piece.

The fishing minigame is a bit more complicated than FFXI. You choose the depth you want to cast in, cast your line, then have the option of Wait, Jig, or Cancel. You need to use Jig to catch fish, and there's a moving indicator when you're using Jig. It's a tad hard to explain without pictures, but I don't have Fraps or anything like that.

I average about 100 class points if I get a bite but don't reel anything in, and around 200 if I do actually catch something. Once they reactivate the beta (it's been temporarily suspended due to technical issues), I'll try some different baits and lures to see what else I can catch.

Wow that fishing system seem way more complicated but all for the better I think. I wish I could log on and try it out but maintenance is up today ):

I'm pretty excited to be a fisher and like most of you, I enjoyed it a lot in XI. Best part of fishing in XI was living visiting a lot of secluded places. I do plan on having a combat or magic as another main but fishing would also be great especially since my play time varies.

I think I am going to be a fisher and culinarian. There seems to be demand for raw fish in several different trades which is good news for us. Also, fishing looks to support several cooking recipes. Hopefully taking up business in consumables will be profitable. People need to eat, right? = p

Fishing is fun! I do more of that than fighting recently in the beta. Got the hang of it pretty quickly...not taking long to go from 1-8...I may have to consider rethinking my starting strategy now...
