Right now the devs are probably hard at work squeezing the very best out of the UI. To whit, I would like to offer my humble suggestion. It is a bit of an import from FFXI, but as they say if it isn't broken why fix it?
The suggestion is to include stat increases from gear as a green +X beside your stats in the stats window. For example, if I have 50 base INT and items to the value of 4 INT, I want to see 'INT 50 +4' in the stats window. It's a simple way of seeing, at a glance, exactly what your equipment is doing for you at any given time.
Additionally, it would be beneficial to see what equipping items do for particular stats. So, for example, if I were to highlight a new body piece while switching gears it would display the stats I would have with that gear. Red for lower stats, green for increases.
It's a simple addition, but it can make a huge difference in playability when you can see at a glance what equipment gear will do for you.
Edit: I realise that currently the system highlights stats in red if they're increases or decreases, but it only compares direct stats on items rather than the end-result when equipped. When equipping items of higher rank, for example, the stats are almost always shown in green because of their increased bonus. Equipping them, however, shows that you often get a reduced benefit.
