Honestly, I'm with KK and preludes. I tried Welcome Back and couldn't muster any enthusiasm for a game that superficially looked somewhat different, but was still fundamentally broken to me. So now I'm in a holding pattern of checking the boards every few days and watching the 2.0 rollout, but honestly, it's mostly morbid curiosity at this point.
I looked at that, out of curiosity. It seems you just did some leves and got level 5 archer and didn't really do any of the new content. Unless you re-rolled on a different character that is in your signature.
But if you didn't, seems to me you didn't give the game a fair chance with the changes. You chose Archer, which doesn't benefit too much from the new battle system at lower levels. And you ended right below the minimum level needed to join a grand company, which is where 90% of the new content is centered.
Edited, Jul 11th 2012 9:51am by UltKnightGrover You're absolutely right. But that's part of the problem, you see. Why should I have to grind anything to get to interesting, meaningful content 20 levels from the beginning of the game? I've said this before and I'll say it again. The starting process in XIV is atrocious. A good impression it has never made. Levequests are the absolutely laziest filler for content I've ever seen. If I take a leve from a farmer who wants moles removed from his fields because they are eating his crops, I expect to see a farmer, a farm, crop fields where I will then remove the moles. I expect there to be an actual in-game-world reflection of what is allegedly going on. But that's not what we got. We got endlessly-go-to-the-crystal-and-kill-mobs-outside-the-camp ad infinitum. Now, if you go to the crystal, start the leve, and the whole scenario is generated with the farmer, farm, fields, etc... that'd be a different issue entirely. But it's not.
So, I can do these lazy placeholders, behests no one do anymore in the early levels, or I can just go grinding thousands of mobs to get to a point where the game says "Oh, well, here's something else you can try
now" -- Sorry, but no. That is the farthest possible opposite of interesting and engaging to me for fun in a game. I have no interest in sitting at my computer and grinding endlessly like some sort of lab rat hitting the pellet pedal for another crumb of food or opiate. I want to be engaged, not anesthetized. And really, FFXIV can't even anesthetize because of its ham-fisted controls, busted operations, and ridiculous UI. So, right now, it's the perfect storm of maddening and completely non-descript.
So, while you're right in what you say, I think the fact that new players have to just suck it up for 20 levels to get to something interesting is unforgivable.
