Your DVD burner should be fine for FFXIV, but your Blu-ray reader might not be powerful enough.

I find it hard to believe you have DDR2 RAM with an i7 CPU.

You didn't even list your GPU model.

somehow i doubt he even knows the model number :p

on a serious note theres no point of giving us useless information for the game, like the people that list their case model, power supply model (maybe useful if you seek upgrades), cd drive, keyboard and mice models =.= just keep it clean and simple, cpu, gpu, ram is all you need to figure out how well it runs generally

So I want a PC for the main intention of playing FFXIV, everything else comes 2nd. I know I have hundreds of options but I am not educated enough to know what I want. Long story short I decided to walk into best buy and ask around. I grabbed a copy of the game, told them to show me a computer that would run it at a better than average level and that I would be able to easily upgrade in the future. They showed me this:

It is clear you didn't even read the original post of this thread. If you had read it, or read any single page of this entire thread, you would know that PC is at minimum going to need a GPU upgrade.

Because the HD 4200 is significantly inferior to the HD 2900. Higher model number doesn't necessarily mean better.

Don't believe sales reps at Bestbuy for giving you recommendations for this game. Unless they play this game themselves, they don't know jack squat about it.

Also, pre-built computers tend to have very iffy power supplies. It's not even listed in the specifications of the computer you linked to. That's one of the first things they cut costs from without letting you know.

Also, you don't need 6Gb of RAM. 4gb is enough.

At least the CPU isn't bad though.

In short...don't buy a prebuilt computer from a real store. You will invariably be unable to play high end video games at better than the absolute lowest settings, if even that.

If you must buy a pre-built computer and want it to handle this game well look for

Graphics: radeon HD 5830 (in my opinion bare minimum for this game), 6850, 5850, 6870, 5870, 5970 (these are listed in order of their true game play abilities in most games, rather than in order of their model numbers)

or from Nvidia, GTX 285, GTX 465, GTX 460 768MB version, GTX 460 1GB version, GTX 470, GTX 480, GTX 580 (again these are listed in order of their actual graphics power)

For ram anything 4GB or more is fine in either dual or triple channel ddr3 type. If they don't tell you if it is single, dual, or triple channel it usually means they don't know or are hiding the fact that the motherboard is crappy and can't handle dual/triple channel configurations. Also make sure it is at least 1066MHz DDR3 ram or higher, which may also be called PC3-8500 or higher.

For the CPU I recommend: from Intel: i5 760, i7 870, or any i7 with a number higher than 870. The higher the better.

or from AMD: Phenom II x4 or x6 945 or higher.

Lower processors will play the game, but not the way you'd probably like it to. Even the fastest monster cpu out there tends to limit the framerate in this game. It's really not worth the money to buy anything less than this if you want the computer to last at all for video games.

Thanks a bunch for the info guys. I just started at bestbuy since I needed a place to start. Gonna take these recommendations and read threw a buncha old posts and try to build one most likely. I'll be posting what I'm getting before I actually make a purchase to let ppl look at and make comments/suggestions on. Again, thanks Threx and haydyn323!

Installed the game couple of days ago, tried many type of configurations but even with the lowest settings the game is quite slow and laggy, in cities NPCs take 30-60sec to appear.

PC:

Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate Edition 32bit
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q8400 @ 2.66GHz
4 GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 5400 Series 1GB

Game settings are:

"Display Mode" Full Screen
"Window Size" 1280x800
"Multisampling" No AA
"Buffer Size" Resolution
"Shadow Detail" Lowest
"Ambient Occlusion" off
"Depth of Field" off
"Texture Quality" low
"Texture Filtering" Lowest

"Character Shadows" OFF
"Dust Effects" OFF
"Extended Drawing" OFF
"Physics" OFF

Is there anything I could try to improve performance? or should I upgrade something on my pc?

You can try running the game in windowed mode at a lower resolution than your Windows resolution.

You can also upgrade your video card. That looks like it's the bottleneck in your system right now.

You can try adding a second GTX 460 for a bit of an improvement when you have the money for it. Otherwise ya... a gtx 580 is your best bet for the best fps and least lag if money is not a problem. A gtx 580 would give you almost double the responsiveness and framerate of a GTX 460, but for more than double the cost of a GTX 460. This game is still better at running smoothly with single powerful cards vs multiple weaker cards though unfortunately.

I'm almost offended by this. I used to work at Best Buy because I was really into computers and wanted to work at an electronics store, and I know my hardware.

Well, conversely, my closest friend that got me the job (who worked at the computer department) knew next to nothing about computers and used to just ask me what I thought about a customer's request, even when I worked in the camera department before being transferred to computers. Ironically, I knew next to nothing about digital cameras outside of pointing and clicking.

Hello Everyone, this is my first post and I just recently got FFXIV yesterday.

I run it on an Asus laptop with these specs:

CPU:Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8700 @ 2.53GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.5GHz
OS:Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
GPU:NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M

The performace is lacking (which I expected based on my benchmark results) but the thing that really annoys me is the mouse lag. I can't stand it. It makes simple tasks a pain.

So I've been wanting to buy a desktop computer for some time now, and now I think its time. I checked out the initial post but honestly I don't trust myself enought to build my own computer.

I instead checked out the site www.cyberpowerpc.com and have some questions. First off is this site legit? And second what is the best value PC you see on there that could run this game at Standard-High setting very stable? I thought the Gamer Dragon 8000 seemed like the best deal but I'm not too much of a computer wiz. I want to spend around $1000-1100 on the computer as I still have to buy a monitor and keyboard.

That's a legit site, although I've heard a few people say that they had to return a few things that came damaged.

The Dragon 8000 system you mentioned is a pretty good PC. It will run this game fine. :)

Why would you "upgrade" from a 6850 to a 5870? The 6850 is cheaper and performs marginally better. Both HD 6xxx cards are very solid cards at very competitive prices, I wouldn't recommend a 5xxx series ATI at all anymore.

The 6850 is an inferior card to the 5870. It's closer to the performance of a GTX 460. AMD pretty much released it as a direct competition to the GTX 460. It's a mid-upper tier card, not an upper tier card like the 5870.

Passmark results can be a bit misleading at times. According actual reviews from various sites, the 6850 shouldn't be ranked as high as Passmark has it.

Even if it's artificially high... it can't be that huge of a discrepancy, can it? So instead of being a hair better, it's slightly worse. You're still paying another $300 for a small increase in performance. I don't see the value, especially seeing that even the 6870 is still cheaper than the 5870. If anything, why not make that jump and crossfire it?

The huge price difference that comes with a small increase in performance holds true to pretty much everything in this world. It's the price you pay for that "status item".

It's like...a +1 item in XI can be insanely more expensive than a NQ while only being a bit better. Yet people pay through their noses for it simply because "it's the best."

I wouldn't go for the top items irl personally, since like you said, you pay much more for a slight increase in performance, and I don't have money to throw around.

But if I'm rich, sure, I'd buy the very best without the slightest hesitation.

But again, if you really have the money to throw around, why not get a 6870 so you can crossfire the two cards for a very large increase in performance?

Because if you really have money to throw around, you would crossfire 5870s which is better than 6870s.

If you had the money to throw around, you'd SLI GTX 470's, maybe 480's if you're swimming in cash.

Really though, any card from the 5850 and GTX 460 or better in SLI/XFire is going to give you an amazing amount of gameplay. Considering 5850/GTX 460 SLI/XFire will play almost any game currently available above 50 FPS, the 3-8 FPS switching to a better card in SLI/XFire isn't even noticeable at those framerates, even at max settings.

Well, this goes back to what I've said before about old chipsets being upgraded. It depends on what the person is upgrading from, or their budget. It's not really worth the price to go from a Fermi to another Fermi, just like it wasn't worth the price to go from a G92 to a G92b (8800GT to 9800GTX or equivalent).

I see several scenarios:

1. Person has a Fermi card (GTX 400 series) - Not worth it.
2. Person doesn't have a Fermi card and is on a budget ($250-350) - Better to get a GTX 500 series card.
3. Person doesn't have a Fermi card but has a mid-line budget ($350-450) - Better to get two GTX 400 series cards for SLI, which will run better than a single GTX 500.
4. Person doesn't have a Fermi card but has a large budget ($500+) - Might as well get Tri-SLI and any card he wants.

in the OP for the easy prey system build it comes up with around $550 and says something about the OS. does that mean you will have to buy windows? if so isnt that like another $500 or something? i really want to play this game but can not afford to spend 800-1000 on a pc just to play.

Windows 7 isn't remotely that expensive. Even a full install for Ultimate is only $320. Home premium full install is $200, upgrade is $120. Those are also retail prices, I guarantee newegg.com or some other online store will have them for sale even cheaper. You could also pirate it and pay zero, or do the intermediary, pirate vista, then upgrade with a legit 7 copy. I don't really care which.

Just don't be surprised if you're disappointed with the lack of polish on the game though.

An HD 5770 should run your game "fine" on standard game settings.

A few weeks ago I posted on these forums asking about my computer specs, and what I would need to upgrade. I knew almost nothing about computers or how they worked, and thought I only needed a GPU. I have been working hard researching everything and understanding how everything works together. I just recieved a 550W PSU from my brother and installed it, which included multiple connectors so I am pretty sure that is good enough for most motherboards/GPUs.

From what I have researched, I was thinking I should replace my CPU as well, however I am not sure whether it is completely compatible with my current motherboard. Therefor I figured I could just replace all 3, my CPU/motherboard/GPU.

I am on ~$500 budget and was curious if someone could list a CPU/motherboard compatible combo, and a GPU that total would be within my budget. I am hoping I can just play the game decently on medium settings.

Comes out pretty close to $500 and will run this game pretty well on decent settings. I included RAM as I'm guessing your old ram is not dual channel DDR3 240 pin, which is what this, and most, new motherboards require. The 6850 would allow you to eventually use 2 video cards for increased performance with this motherboard. The motherboard does not support dual video card setup with GeForce cards though. If you intend to use only one, the GTX 460 is probably slightly faster.

Also as far as the PSU is concerned, make sure it has:
at least 2x 6-pin connectors
at least 1x 8-pin or 2x 4-pin motherboard/cpu connectors (this is not the same as an 8-pin video card power connector)
1x 24-pin motherboard power connector

I recently, over the course of 2 months built my computer. I lucked out on the CPU because a friend at work gets the Intel Retail Edge Discount :) Here's what I got, at max settings and no Ambient Occlusion/Depth of field im around 50-60fps constant. At standard settings it's constantly 60fps, and with Amb.Occ and DoF turned on its a constant 30fps.

My world isn't populated as much anymore but around crystals and town I have no lag. The only bug I might see and I don't know if it's my computer or the game is when walking up/down hills the character bounces up and down like it's hitting geometry the wrong way.

One other though I was thinking about also, I currently have windows vista on my desktop, if i were to replace the cpu/motherboard/gpu, would I still have the OS? Or will i have to reinstall all that and buy a new one. I am asking this because it was installed back at my parents house before I went to college, now that I am here, I dont have access to any of the CD's I would need to install it.
