Dude AO doesnt even work.. And DOF doesnt exactly make the game look nicer anyways:P it just blurs backgrounds. I said max settings because textures and shadows are maxed, which really make the game look great!

Yeah well even a q6600 would do if you you OC it a little. Mines running at 2.8 GHz

I get like 40-50 fps in the forest and like 20-40 fps in Gridania running with max settings including buffer set to double at 1920x1080 (so that's 3840x2160 ppl) no AO, no DOF. 3x Temporal AA.

My graphics cards are two Radeon HD 5770 1GBs and I have 8GB DDR2 RAM

The Q6600 is good too, but the 9550/9650's are a lot better. Even the Q6600 bottlenecks the GPU at 3.0GHz. I found I had to run my game double buffered (or turn DoF on) for the GPU to be utilized at 90-95% instead of the normal 40-60% that made the game run like crap. That netted me 15-20 FPS in town and 30-40 FPS in the field with a GTX480.

On my PC with an i7 930 (roughly equivalent to a 9550/9650 in this game), the GPU would be fully utilized even without double buffering, which allowed me to run at 30-40 FPS in town, and 50-60 FPS in the field.

haha well i needed a sata cable! best buy is the only store that sells computer related stuff in my area, but after i saw the price i walked out and waited til the weekend to go to frys to pick up the cable

Maybe it's because my FSB is running at 1600Mhz and I've timed my RAM 1:1 with the FSB (800Mhz). It makes the overclock more effective.

It's entirely possible that you are being limited by your ram. DDR2 800MHz is way behind the times for speed. If you had faster ram, you would likely see a bottleneck at your CPU, but as you can't transfer instructions to and from the ram fast enough, your cpu is waiting around for information.

This is all just a possibility, but if you are not seeing 100% gpu or cpu, ram is likely your reason.

Hi all,

saw this thread and figured someone might help as well.

I have an Alienware Aurora with the below main specs:
Intel® Core™i7-930 Processor (2.8GHz, 8MB)
6GB (3X2GB) DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz Memory
1GB NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 460
1TB-7,200RPM Hard Drive

And on high settings, I'm getting a score of 800+ on the benchmark. What would the issue be?

is this the case? cause im feeling kinda disappointed with my machine, ive spent around 1.5k making her all that she can be. plus i can play every other game on max settings and resolution and not have so much as a glitch out of her.

make sure there aren't much background app to suck the power? the game does support sli and crossfire but you should still be able to get more than that, i get around 4500 with my pc that i spent less than half the price you paid... i did notice a bump in performance after a fresh win7 install

That is indeed odd.

Try downloading CPU-Z and GPU-Z and check the stats of your CPU and GPU.

Is that 3950 score on low or high?

If high, then that's already a very good score for an HD 5850.

If low, then it's because your CPU is the bottleneck. AMD CPUs perform inferior to Intel ones for this game's benchmark. My Phenom II 955 3.2Ghz scored just a bit over 4k before overclocking, so your score is fine.

Exactly. You can try overclocking to 3.5 GHz if you have a good enough cpu heatsink to remove some of the bottleneck. Also...did you say DDR2 ram? Should really be using DDR3 ram these days. You could have a ram bottleneck.

Hey guys, here I am with yet another question.

When I built my rig I had in mid to go for crossfire in the future, maybe around black friday sales. But now, I see that newegg is not selling the gpu I had got, which is a HIS HD5850. Now, to cross fire do I need two identically cards (Same model/brand/speed) or I can do it with any two cards that belong to the same notch (HIS & Saphire) or maybe same brand different notch (HD5850 & HD5870)

Agh, with new prices in envidia cards, I wish I had gone for SLI.

As long as both are 5850s, it totally doesn't matter. Now if one is clocked to run faster than the other, both will run at the lower clock speed, so take that into account and try not to get one clocked lower than your current one. Also, no, you cannot combine a 5850 with anything other than a 5850 for crossfire.

Im not sure how to check my cpu or gpu usage if alt+tab causes crash. But, RAM speed isnt really a factor for performance in games. DDR2 is good RAM regardless of speed unless maybe it was running at a measley 533.

Actually, for Radeon cards it only needs to be the same generation cards to be able to crossfire. It doesn't have to be the same type of card. As long as the first two numbers are the same, they are the same generation.

5830
5850
5870

The above three can be mixed and matched any way you want for crossfire.

A 5830 + a 5770, though, will not work, as they are different generation cards.

For nVidia, it needs to be the same type of card to work in SLI. Two 480s, two 460s, etc. No 480 + 470 combos. Doesn't need to be the same brand though.

Play the game windowed. And RAM can affect framerate (though only about 5% or so unless you have some really slow stuff I suppose). In any case, play the game windowed and watch the meters if you have them.

that score is definitely off, i would double check if you plugged the GPU in correctly and see if somehow you are running the onboard graphics rather than the GTX, theres no reason to have a benchmark score lower than 4k with your setup, so check your hardware connections, if thats fine then check your system, maybe do a clean reinstall of windows (complete reformat to get rid of everything that might linger around) i remember my benchmark went up 500-800 points after a clean reinstall

Ah, yes, I totally forgot about the integrated GPU. That could be the case.

Quick question guys;

Would a gtx480 (1536mb) be better than 2 gtx 460 (2gb) in SLI? In terms of playing this game.

That is a tough one to answer. SLI has recently been made workable in FFXIV and there aren't a lot of people who have posted their newly working settings comparing the two. For one, SLI will work best with a 900 series i7 or a phenom II. If you are planning to use anything else, a single powerful card like a 480 will do you better.

If you have the money and the power supply to handle it, I'd get the 480 just so you have the option of getting another 480 in the future for some serious power.

If you are looking for power per dollar, 2x 460s will likely win out.

My guess is that 2x 460s (assuming they are the 1gb version) are going to get a little bit better fps than a single 480.

What Power supply should i aim for if getting a Single 480?
Or for 2 460s?

The 460s are 2 gb each

i would get at least 850w if not 1kw no matter which you choose, also i would wait and see if you can get a good deal on 460s, from the benchmarks i seen the 1gb and 2 gb versions of 460 are virtually similar (with an average difference of less than 2fps on most tests) so better off getting 2 cheaper 1 gb than going full price on 2 2gb

Hey guys I am going to be buying parts to assemble a new gaming rig with my friend this next coming up week and i have a power supply (psu) question for my build

I have researched and saw that the gtx 480 under load consumes 450 watts on full load and about 200ish on idle and i was thinking that i might get 2x gtx 480 within a couple months just to boost performance. And the CPU consumes roughly 130 Watts. So should i be getting a 1200 watt psu bc 2x 480 gtx + I7-960 will be roughly 1030 watts under full load plus the misc other power demands which is about 100 more. So total of 1130 under full stress with 2 cards.

My friend tells me that i just need a 850 watt psu and that will support both cards fine but i just want a second opinion bc i dont want to be wasting money if i get the wrong psu. This is a 1 time build that i dont plan on changing for a few years at least. Plz help

well depending on what type of person you are: there are people that'll build a system that'll last them a few years 3-4+, and there are people that upgrade gradually. the 460x2 will be the first type where it'll last you a solid 3-4 years playing games on highest settings but will probably need 2 new cards if you want to stick to the highest settings for the years to come, a 480 would be the second type where we can get another 480 next year or the year after and still have top of the line system for years to come...
at this point both sets will be able to run ffxiv with no problem what so ever (probably can't got 8xAA and probably need to take off AO and Depth of field, don't actually know what they do, haven't noticed any difference after i turned them off (running 460 on highest for everything detail-wise, constant 55+ fps in the field))

personally i like to gradually upgrade my system picking up parts whenever they are on sale and sticking them in, rather than dumping all my savings at one go to build a pc that i hope to last me for a few years (like the guy above us, minus the dumpling all the savings part)

So many choices to choose from lol! I think I'm going to aim for getting a single 480 for now and leave 2 empty pci slots on my motherboard free so that if i find a good deal on another 480 in like a year or something i can fill that slot up with it, i think it's better than having to replace two new cards, as i belive the 480s will last longer than the 460s.

Gonna aim for a 1000W psu. Think it should suffice for the 480 and future upgrades to RAM/GPU.

Ok thnx. It will look like i am going to get the Corsair AX 1200 Watt psu then since its the highest rated on power efficiency (90% efficiency at 50% demand and it will dial up or down the watt consumption when needed) , allow for future modifications, and plus only costs $70 more than a 1000 watt psu.

Yea pretty much what i am going to do. Also since Black Friday is coming around by the end of this month i might hold out and buy everything then. I heard that Newegg.com gets some major deals on that day and i am waiting to see what exactly is going to go on sale from Bestbuy.

haha only 70 dollars more :p my whole psu is less than that price

but yeah good idea to wait for black friday, check newegg, frys, microcenter and tigerdirect... bestbuy generally don't have good deals on computer parts (do they have any at all?) and you probably won't find anything there unless you are looking for a prebuilt computer, plus all their exponents are hella expensive ($20 dollars for a sata cable for reference)

I havent gone into Bestbuy yet to see what the store exactly has but according to online they have all the parts needed and are equal prices to Newegg.com Some are parts are $10 more and some are $10 less or so etc. But I would have the convenience of a store i can return the parts to instead of having to mail in everything if anything was damaged. Plus i wouldnt have to pay for shipping and sales tax on top of everything. But of course if Newegg or any of the other places have a far better deals where there will be a noticeable price difference i will take the risk with USPS (which has lost 2 packages and accidentally mailed to the wrong address a 2.5k money order that i was supposed to get)

Also Corsair's PSU's (and everything else) tend to be more on the pricy side of things but their quality and reputation are outstanding. So since i had the extra cash i decided to go the more expensive way but it feels safer when i plan on really tryn to OC my computer and its parts. I have heard horror stories on some other parts specially from cyberpower who make some of their own products but they are a piece of garbage and break down really fast or cause damage/problems to other components.

i see, bestbuy normally don't carry their component parts in stores so everything will be online anyway, not sure how the returning process works, if you live near microcenter i strongly encourage you to check it out and see their sales, i haven't seen anyone else beat their price on cpus and bundles, frys has good deals too (at least better than newegg most of the time, not a fan of them advertising a bundle thats "saving" you 20 dollars when their parts start off more expensive the MC and frys) since you plan on getting an expensive mobo that would eliminate a lot of CPU deals since they generally comes in bundles that give you free mobo after buying the processor

but yeah picking up a good PSU is important especially if you are gonna be running expensive parts, definitely don't want to burn out the 2 480s because of a power failure... plus you want to do heavy OCing to your parts, keep in mind if you don't need it, don't OC, it'll shorten the lifetime on the parts as it'll run hot most of the time, so if you are already getting great fps, no point to push the GPU and CPU for no gain at all

and looking at your builds, wow definitely wish i can shell out that kind of money on a pc for a game, just couldn't justify upgrading more after seeing my pc can handle revit and autocad 3D :) definitely gonna try to get parts like yours when i get out of college and land the 60k+ job, super jealous haha

I will def. look into if there is a microcenter anywhere near me. And i am not just getting this to play FF thought i am just tired of tryn to do too many things on my laptop and the constant lag. And the way i was figuring my bro just spent 2.8k on a macbook pro and here i can build a beast PC for less than that and it will out perform his macbook pro 3x over lol. Also i am a college student as well but i do work everyday with no days off and make a decent amount of money to put myself through school, pay the bills and to save up a little at a time. Now when i get into grad school next year that will be a different story lol

I absolutely agree with your view on Corsair PSUs, and they are the only brand I will ever buy.

First reason is the outstanding quality.

Second reason is their top notch customer service. I am an idiot and lost my extra modular cables for my PSU I bought 3 years ago. A simple email and they sent me new 6 pin modular PCI power cables completely free. I was having the hardest time even finding any for sale and I would have gladly paid $20 or so, but they just stuck some in an envelope and mailed them to me with no questions asked.

Because of that, Corsair has a customer for life.

Corsair PSU's quality and reputation are excellent because they are just badging Seasonic internals. If you like Corsair - you like Seasonic - and vice versa. What can sometimes be different is the options at a certain wattage level. Seasonic has modular on some models, Corsair does it on a different set of wattages, etc. But they are the same on the inside...

I'm also using a Corsair PSU, the HX 750 Modular. :)

Would have gone with an 850 for future proof (to add a second GTX 460) but I was already over budget. :(

Thanks all. Computer is up and running. Only had a few problems too wasn't too difficult.

1.) While installing optical drive i dented the heatsink fan plugs on the mother board.
2.) Couldn't figure out which skrews went where.
3.) Wasn't sure if the Power Supply fan should face up or down. Its facing up mounted on the bottom but the writing and plug is upside down.
4.) Think my heatsink is upside down.... and extremely hard to latch into place.
5.) After hardware I went to install windows 7 and it asked for a disk for my hard drive. Fixed after I rebooted.

Thanks again every one who helped. I'm really happy I'm finally in the game.

Yeah its my first. thanks for the congrats. Only thing I've done before is ram(A LONG LONG time ago) and helped a friend put a dvd drive also a long time ago so this was pretty intense for me.

In the end I came up with 4 extra SATA cables(something came with 4 and I baught two) and tons of molex cables. How do I find out what kind of fans I can put into my antec 300 case? i've been looking in the manual and I cant find the size fan I need. I wanted to put two led fans in the front as intake and the two in the back and top for exhaust.

Yeah its my first. thanks for the congrats. Only thing I've done before is ram(A LONG LONG time ago) and helped a friend put a dvd drive also a long time ago so this was pretty intense for me.

use a ruler to measure the diameter :) who needs a manual when its that easy :)

Is this the exact model of your case? If so, in the description you will see:

• 1 rear 120 x 25 mm TriCool™ Fan with 3-speed switch control.
• 1 top special 140 x 25 mm TriCool™ Fan with 3-speed switch control
• 2 front (optional) 120 mm fans to cool the hard drives
• 1 side (Optional) 120 x 25 mm Fan to cool graphic

So the back of the case supports a 120mm fan, which already comes with the case.
The top supports a 140mm fan, which also comes with the case.
The front supports TWO 120mm fans, which you have to buy yourself.
The side supports a 120mm fan, which you have to buy yourself.

Threx I'm not sure if you like me or not... but I LOVE you. I guess it would have been smarter to look at the company site instead of newegg. I sometimes have a problem thinking outside the case... box.

Damn, I hope you have an air conditioner in that room. That setup is going to run at like 800 watts idle, 1200 or so at max load. Kind of like being in the room with a clothes dryer that doesn't have an exhaust vent.

Nice fps though.

Your DVD burner should be fine for FFXIV, but your Blu-ray reader might not be powerful enough.

I find it hard to believe you have DDR2 RAM with an i7 CPU.

You didn't even list your GPU model.
