Hello all, I'm returning again (for the 5th time I think?) and I had a question that I haven't seen addressed in any "returning players" stickies. Background info: I used to play on PS2 and had a security token so I never worried much about account security. Now I will be playing on a PC and I no longer have a security token (lost and deactivated).

My question: I remember a few years back when I last played (2008 or 2009) I used to frequent a certain website to view maps of FFXI zones. I really liked going to the site because the maps were very helpful. I remember hearing that that site was suspected of giving people spyware (keyloggers to be specific) for account information to be stolen. Since I played on PS2 I never really paid much attention to what was being said or the eventual verdict on whether the site was the source of the spyware. What I am wondering is whether or not there are any sites that I should avoid now that security is a much more pressing concern for me than it was as a PS2 player.

Bonus Question: (This is addressed in the stickies, but any extra info is helpful because I really don't know much on the topic at all...) Since I am kind of a n00b when it comes to computers in general, what are the most important things I should be doing to keep my account safe? I never worried about it on PS2. I honestly didn't know you could get a keylogger just by going to a website. I have a free virus scan and my internet access comes through a router which I believe gives me a firewall. Like I said, I really don't know much about computers...

Thank you for the replies and Sorry in advance for my ignorance.

The site with viruses was ffxi-atlas.com.

You can get perfectly good maps at wiki.ffxiclopedia.org which is safe.

Thanks for the help. Was that the only site to be avoided or are there any other reference sites that are bad news?

For the most part, if you stay with zam, ffxiclopedia, and bgwiki, you should be fine. With that said, I strongly suggest using a web browser other than internet explorer. If you choose to use firefox, ad block and no script are bare minimum add-ons that should help keep your computer safer. With both of those add-ons, you will want to white list sites that you explicitly trust.
