OK, I could pretend that I have some questions about Abyssea (I left before it was around), higher level limits, casual/solo-friendliness, etc. But to be honest, I'm sure I can find that out with a minimum of Googling and looking at stickies. I mostly just want to brag/confess that I actually think I'm going to log back in. Oh, and who's on Leviathan?

I miss the content, the battles, the people... But darn it hurts my eyes. If they ever did update it I would be back to start over in an instant. I would do Zilart, CoP, ToAU, WotG... All of it again.

Is that a less than subtle way of saying you only play games that use the latest graphics? Personally, I don't find the game to be ugly in the least bit, despite its age. The devs have proven they still have a few visual surprises up their sleeves, despite the apparent limitations of the system, and everything is presented in a manner which works well.

Maybe it doesn't quite compare to the visual feast that is Final Fantasy XIV, but at least it trumps it hand over foot for gameplay. Though I hope that one day, FFXIV becomes as strong a contender as its predecessor.

I still have a blast playing Pong on an Atari, while drunk with my friends. Just goes to show you that graphics aren't everything.

I got to level 99 and quit again just this month. XD At least I got un-rusted for not having played for so long.

FFXI is a classic case of good aesthetic design overcoming low-quality graphics. The engine certainly isn't cutting-edge (it doesn't even use DX9(!), last I checked), but the whatever else you can say about the game, the art direction is consistent and deliberate. This is a running thread through Square's games. WoW, on the other hand, keeps on top of the graphics game, but it still looks like crap from an artistic perspective. Blizzard obviously put more thought into SC2, which is quite nice looking.

Other games that exemplify aesthetics > graphics:

Katamari Damacy
The Wind Waker / Skyward Sword
Okami
Persona 3 / 4

All of the above were released on graphically sub-par platforms (Yes, the PS2 was atrocious graphically, even for its time. It made up for it with the strength of its massive library), but have a striking look you can easily remember envision years after playing them. Compare that to the latest CoDs/Battlefields (with the exclusion of Bad Company), where everything is same-y in the name of "realism".

I think XI with the registry tweaked looks pretty good. Not ideal, but nice enough to be playable. I wish we had XIV's looks (not graphics engine) over the original XI game.
