Best way forward?Follow

Basically looking for a rough roadmap of the way forward on this game having just started. I'm level 28 war and just got support job. Most guides i've read though kind of suggest partying at various locations which i believe from lack of activity are now outdated. I've had a few invites for parties in the mines of which i've heard are people boosting xp of which i've no interest in doing. No point paying for the game if i'm not gonna play it properly imo.
So yes generally just looking for hints and tips as to what i should be looking to do at certain levels.

It's really not hard at all!

So what you do is this. (if you like to plan ahead like me)
1. Start out the game as Warrior in Sandy or Bastok.
2. Do your normal quests in the city that give you stupidly good rewards for running around the starting zones.
3. Level up to 13 (I think) and go to Gusgen Mines. You will find people spamming pages here on skeletons. Do this to level 30.
4.Unlock sub job.
5. Go to Jeuno start your Abyssea quest to begin acrueing time stones. (unlock a advanced job with help if you like )
6. Repeat this process with all possible sub jobs you will be using for your main job.
7. Once you have every sub job and main job you want to level 30, go to Crawler's Nest and do pages for bees and crawlers till about 50.
8. Finish out all of your sub jobs (feel content that you will not be gimp!) and head over to the dungeon under Sandy. I believe you can get up to lvl 70 here on bats.
9. You can get 70-75 any number of ways. I recommend leeching in Abyssea or soloing pages in Kuftal tunnel or Cape Teriggan.
10. From 75 - 99 do worms in Abyssea-Latheine. The reason I say this place is because I think it's the best place to get skill-ups when your under-skilled.
After you hit 99, enjoy doing all the other wonderful things (honestly too many things are in this game) in the game. If you focus on really maybe 1 main job and three sub jobs you could probably accomplish all of this in a weekend, maybe two if your not as driven or have as much free time.

He states that he has no interest in "boosting xp"

Unfortunately Corsairu is correct, Finding an XP party these days is nigh on impossible. You will likely get invited to a book burn if you put your flag up but never know.

The only other option will be to grind solo using books anyway since you need Tabs earned for the various buffs available, not to mention the gil obtained once game day from them. Reraise and Reperation is worth doing books for Tabs at the very least. Doing this will allow you to explore more areas and keep you from falling too far behind on skills. Keep your flag up anyway never know might get lucky on an actual XP group or at the very least Team Up w/ a couple players working the same page. Wiki still has a fairly comprehensive guide on the various FOV's and the levels at which you would want to attempt them. If you still intent on not using books the FoV guide will at least guide you in the where and what level you can effectively fight mobs.

Good Luck

Just wondering what do you mean by "boosting xp"? Do you mean "gaining exp using a method unintended by the developers"? That's kind of the sense I got from your post. If so, those parties you read about in the Mines are perfectly fine to join. In one of their few-and-far-between moments of clarity, SE added the Field Manuals and Ground Tomes used to boost exp, and are an excellent way to supplement your standard per-kill exp gained. Not only that, but it provides a great opportunity to meet other players and socialize. The way to exp "properly" seems to change every 2-3 years, so it's nothing to concern yourself with. Get exp, make some gil, find a couple friends, and just enjoy the ride.

Old school partys are pretty much obsolete I doubt you could realistically find 5 other people with the right jobs to exp with you like that now. The only other option is to solo your way up which in all honesty I'd recommend if you've never played before because it will give you a chance to see and explore a lot more than you would only doing gov in three different zones then abyssea the rest of the way. It would probably be boring to solo the whole time so I would do both.

Can you not level sync anymore? We used to do that, although most jobs I argue can easily be solo'd past 20 now with recent additions.

It's been a while but are page burn parties no longer done? I wouldn't consider those to be cheating either.

You can still level sync and GoV groups are still being done. The OP has even been invited to them. But he wants to party the old way (tank, healer, support, puller, 2x dd) or none at all.

I feel the same way when I see people up to level 40 without a subjob. My first thought is of RMT alliances in the old days but then its like "No, just a new player"

With the recent ??? quest added for G1 items, it should be possible to solo all the way to 95 with no need for a subjob, depending on your main job. Some jobs do better with no subjob than others. Trying to solo missions on a no subjob mule can give you a taste of "hard mode", if you're tired of your 99 rolling over everything.

Durn whippersnappers...

Back in my day we ain't have no fancy Grounds of Valor, we had to go to the Valkurm Dunes and kill crabs, lizards, and goblins for 150 exp a kill, and we ain't have no refresh, or power leveler, or nothin', we had to wait HOURS for a party sometimes, and if one person left, that was it, we had to replace him, or that was the end of the exp!

New Player: Yeah sure Grandpa... That doesn't make sense, it would take you days to level up like that...

And furthermore! Go get your subjob at 18 like a self-respecting whippersnapper! In the old days if someone got to level 30 without a subjob, we labeled him a good-fer-nothin gimp!

New Player: That's not effiicient at all grandpa... I'll be level 30 in about an hour. In the time it would take me to go get the items, do the quest, and level up a second job. I could have already unlocked my new job and taken it to level 15.

YOU DURN YOUNGUNS WITH YER ROCK MUSIC AND IPHONES!
You need to go kite Kirin! Level up on Spartois! Set up skillchains and magic bursts! Back when the level cap were 75 we did things the right way! You can take yer Embrava, and yer Abyssea, and yer Blue Mages! I'LL HAVE NONE OF IT!

New Player: Haha, you're so weird grandpa...

Thanks for the above tips, seem muddling my way through. Have now unlocked DRK, got a choco license and expect i will be staying around for a while come the end of my trial.
Little question though, i read i need to do quests/missions at certain levels to unlock the ability to go past a certain level @ level 50. Simply is there a preferred job class to make this process easier?

You have to complete a quest to go past level 50, then another to pass 55, then another to pass 60, etc, etc.. Every five levels until cap.

Having White Mage, Scholar, Red Mage, or Ninja leveled helps simply because a few of the quests involve exploring areas full of aggressive enemies, and the aforementioned jobs have spells that allow them to traverse undetected by monsters. Although, there are items that any job can use to get these same effects.

Also, a few of the quests require certain items that drop from monsters, so if you have a class that can handle itself without needing much support or resting, that part will be easier. The job Thief gets a trait that makes items drops more often, which is quite helpful in that situation as well.

well, no... but you'll eventually want to get that airship pass... but with how easy gil is to come by at cap these days it would actually probably take less time to farm the gil than to bother with the keys

Really? Thats cool. Considering I had 230 days playtime on my last account, using 39493292 hours grinding gil and crafting materials doesn't seem so appealing starting over again. :p

I sort of suck but just playing around for two days (basically someone playing a weekend) I pulled in about a million gil or so, just from doing dynamis once with some friends and stuff I got from chests while soloing

heck someone even gave me a 100K to open a gate for them in The Eldieme Necropolis... that took me like 6 mins.
