Hey everyone!

Thanks for all the feedback regarding the F8 key! Since it seems like a majority of the opinions we received were asking for separate functions to target only players or only monsters, we will begin testing whether or not we can make this happen.

If everything goes smoothly and the results of the tests are good, we will begin looking into what keys to utilize.

There were some suggestions to use a combination of the F8 with either Ctrl or Alt, but since these keys are used to bring up the macro palette, every time you want to target something, the palettes would appear and disappear. We are just concerned that it might be difficult to see and it might take some time to operate due to the keys being far apart on the keyboard.

As we continue to improve the current system, please feel free to let us know if you have any additional feedback or suggestions regarding key binds for separating these functions.

i'd just be happy if they made it so f8 would only target VW mobs when you are in a vw fight.

also would be happy if it made it target the box right in front of your feet instead of a mob 45 yalms away in abyssea.

F8 is currently based on the distance from a lateral plane of your character's position instead of a proper vector, so if your character was on the origin and facing directly up the Y axis the distance to something is only calculated as directly vertical from the X axis, so something that is 'closer' to an imaginary line going through your shoulders but fifteen feet to the left than something ten feet directly in front of you gets priority. At least that's how I've always noticed it to work. This is why people might complain about it not handling quite right. I remember them 'screwing it up' at least once though and it started like... working right? Like they fixed their vector math or something. I don't use F8 as religiously anymore, instead using F1-Tab to pick targets even in a crowd, so it might have stayed 'fixed'.

I believe the 'first' target when you press Tab or Num-0 is picked the same way, but I've learned to align my camera with what I want to target quickly, hit F1 to target myself, then Tab or Shift-Tab to get to it.

But like everything in this game, once you know how to utilize it, nothing could fathomably work better, so people like me who have been playing with the same interface for 8+ years might be the wrong people to talk to about changing it.

F8 does have some weird categorization though. Sometimes it will target only mobs (like in Abyssea I think) and sometimes it will always target non-mobs (any quest-related point, most doors).

This is a major problem and I'm glad they've decided to do something about it.

F8 is completely useless in Besieged and Campaign Battle, because in a big battle scrum you don't want to target a random NPC or player, you want another enemy. But it's still useful at other times to target NPCs. (I can't remember really wanting to target a player with F8.)

So if they can't use ctrl or alt, how about just making Shift-F8 only target enemy mobs? Really, the only time I have a problem is when there are a lot of enemies around and I want to target one of them. Even better would have further Shift-F8 keys tab through enemy mobs.

I use f8 and find it very useful. I would hate to see it go by the wayside.
Making /target "Bubbling Bernie" actually work would be handy as well .

I'd like to see a /ta <at> so you can quickly target a mob your alliance is fighting.

An alliance could be fighting multiple mobs per party or even per person depending on the event. So how would it even begin to prioritize, and if you want it to prioritize a specific person then boom .assist "person name."

Rocking Phantasy star online 2. And loving it! Hopefully sega get's it right this time. They are having a much better start this go around then Universe but still a ways off calling it a hot contender in today's MMO market.

that logic can be applied to <bt> also but it still works

<bt> is handy, I think <ht> also works if you're CFH'ing links in any situation.

Personally, and call me old fashioned, I'd just like them to reinstate the old /ma "Spell" to cast whatever spell on your current target. The older commands didn't require you to actually specify a target, and if one was omitted the currently selected target was assumed. They then removed this for some crazy reason, forcing you to use <t>.

It sounds like a minor thing, but when soloing as a mage you have to bear in mind we can have a LOT of spells. Often times there are some we've omitted from our macro palettes due to space constraints because they're not as widely used. Being able to cast quickly on the spur of the moment can make all the difference between winning and taking a dirt nap when those lesser used spells become vital.

Weird thing is, we never did get a reason as to why they changed it in the first place.

Most of us just type //spell. We've long abandoned the idea that SE will do anything for the better in this case.
