I've been posting personal blogs on a gaming site about the games that had the biggest impact on me. Seeing as FFXI was definitely one of those, I thought I would link that entry here as well if anyone is interested.

Gotta say, that 5-box setup is badass, even if it was a sign of an unhealthy addiction.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Three and a half years ago I'd probably say Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 6 were the best/most important games of my life. Now it's Hide and Seek with my three year old and those two games don't even register.

Good read, made me think back over the years of all the people I knew who took this game a little too far. I think If I was older when I started playing this game, my life would've spiraled down more than what it did. Luckily I didn't have the resources or quite honestly the determination to make a multi boxing setup like yours.

That's a really awesome 5-box setup. I think FFXI is the only thing in my life besides fast food (thank god my metabolism was good) I ever got addicted to.

I played FFXI off and on for about six years. I was addicted to FFXI for about the first two years. I ended up dropping out of school and for a year I did absolutely nothing but play. I don't think I tasted the cold winter air once. It happened to be my first MMO. I never got addicted to WoW, even though I ended up playing that for about two years as well. I don't regret dropping out of school though, I doubt I missed anything useful from 12th grade. GED was easy enough to get.

MMO's have a tendency to make you less motivated to do other things even if you aren't addicted (at least for me), which is why I'm hesitant to pick one back up now that my life is right where I want it.

Thanks for sharing, it was a good read. I'm glad to hear your addiction didn't ruin anything in your life.

Good read and can also relate to it like I'm sure many people can. I started XI when I was 14 and, like you, didn't know what an MMO had to offer as it was my first one and I purely bought it on the Final Fantasy name it held. Oh, boy... was that ever a mistake. I don't know if it was because I was 14 years old or what, but damn, I got addicted hard. I started faking illness to get the day off school to play, then outright just stating that I wasn't going. After a while I realised I'd got so far behind my school work that every time I attempted to actually go I had some form of panic attack outside the gates. Long and similar story short; I love FFXI (still) but if I could go back... I would burn it.

Thankfully, I'm typing this in the 2nd year of my Computer Science degree so it didn't turn out too bad in the end. This is always where I wanted to end up and, although I'm performing rather poorly, it's due to my lack of enjoyment of the course rather than an MMO lol.
