So I was playing ffxi on my windows 7 ths week. The playonnline crashed.

Unpon reloading every time i would try logging in with that charater, it would crash right as it loads the charater up to log on. It doesn't ban the account as I can log the mule on with that account. In addition I can log my other account in.

This account that won't load up right will load up on my notebook.

Things I have done. I did disinstall playonline and reinstall and reregistered this account. But tht doesn't seem to help.

SE even gave a memo to write playonline support for some reason even though I didn't ask them for help at the time.

It crashed like if you tried to log n test server without installing t correctly.

Any help be helpful

Thanks

Since you can access the account on your netbook, it sounds like the zone your character logged out in got corrupted.

Steps to take:
- Log in on the other system and move your character from the zone you logged them out in
- Run a file check on the system causing the crashes

This is a problem which has existed for years and hits people from time to time it seems, and as Cat says is most likely fixed by moving the character on another PC. I did this for a shellmate years ago, he was stuck just outside the MH in Bastok, as well as having to fix one of my own characters once.

You still have to actually run the FFXI installation again first if you completely uninstalled it. Windows programs usually aren't stand alone executables; they have to have an installer run the build to tell Windows where all the files are that it needs and to create registry settings and stuff.

Depending on the age of your system, the initial FFXI and 4 expansion installation only takes about 20 minutes. Reinstall it, then copy over the folder from your notebook and paste it into the folder you just installed. When you boot up POL the first time, it will grumble and run a file check, which will take 5-10 minutes, and then you're good to go. This avoids the 6+ hour download you'd be facing otherwise.

If you uninstalled it then yes, you will have to install again.

but the laptop was never uninstalled, only the desktop. So I took a USB drive, and moved to to the USB then the PC.

andit says not installed.

When i transfered over it was 50,000 files 11 gigs. So thats crazy if the game didn't move over with it.

Yes, but if you uninstalled it on the desktop, then you have to reinstall it on the desktop.

Your laptop and your desktop are two different computers. Windows programs are not drag and drop; there is a formal "build" process called an installer that has to run. Even if you have all the files available in a directory, the Windows operating system on your desktop has no clue that they are there.

Now, it's possible to install FFXI directly to the USB drive or a flash drive. I've done it. But you still have to have the original installation file or CDs and run them, and then manually change the directory over to the external drive you're installing the game to. Why? because the installer file is what tells the Windows operating system where the actual game is located.

Copying the files from an installed system to a system where it was uninstalled or never installed is like handing someone a map with all the streets and buildings, but no numbers or labels. Windows looks at the folder you're asking it to run and says "I don't know what any of this stuff is called or where it is so I can't help you."

Thanks for the clearification. I had to end up buying a new copy of ffxi. I bought the digital download awhile back on www.direct2drive.com. So I tossed my cd's. Then the website goes out of business. So now steam gets my money.

But I would like to know how to select or move the gave now fro one hard drive on the PC to another as it is full.

If the PC has two hard drives. How can i locate where steam put my games and move them? I do have a few.

Just like moving games from one computer to another requires a re-installation, so does moving games from one hard drive to another. You can hand-hack it in the registry but that will take you hours for each game. Or you can copy your saved game files to the external drive, un-install the game, re-install to the directory you want it on, and then copy your saved game back over to the file it came from, in about thirty minutes per game.

Edit: If your hard drive is also containing videos and movies, it's a heck of a lot easier to move those over to a secondary drive.

I'm pretty sure Steam installs games to the same drive where steam is installed.

the default path is:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common
