Today I was fighting Armed Gears. With a melee setup: thf, bst, whm. When Armed Gears loses one gear its defense is suppose to drop but that did not happen. At 24% HP Armed Gears lost his second gear which is suppose to make him super weak to melee but that did not happen either. I was doing crits for 25-28dmg normal hits were doing 12-18 dmg. Dia 2 was on Armed Gears the whole time. The bst was using turtle pet defence down attack (tortoise stomp) but that did not seem to help either.
Did we glitch Armed Gears? We fought him 3 times in a row and the same thing happend each time. We killed Armed Gears in 20-25 min each time so it was not raged. Did this happen to anybody else?

Killed him twice about a month ago, and did not experience this problem. In three-gear mode, Chaotic Strike would do maybe 120-150 damage tops. When he was down to single gear mode, Chaotic Strike was doing like 4000 damage to him.
One thought is... were you using the corresponding element nukes? Or were you just powering through the high defense over a long battle? I've never EVER killed this without exploiting elemental weaknesses. Perhaps that is a vital component to weakening it as the gears drop? Only thing I can think of. At 75 I don't think it was feasible to power through the defense, but at 99 it might be.

He's one of the few old NMs that I personally have still not figured out.
I've noticed sometimes that the defense drops and sometimes it does not. I don't know if it's just random or if something is happening to cause it.
Considering he said their setup was THF BST WHM, I'm betting not.

Doe the Thf have Aura Steal? If he removed the enspell from Armed gears weird stuff happens. Dispel does the same thing.
Otherwise it's the Dia that put him into the wierd mode.

We did not use nukes. Melee only. Like I said setup was thf, bst, whm. We did use dispel since Armed gears puts up regen, protect, stoneskin ect.
I guess I have to level drk for this then? I read Twilight Scythe will ignore its defence.

If you have to use a melee approach, yes, Twilight Scythe is pretty much the best thing to use on it. Don't even bother with WS (they don't get the special effect on that scythe), just keep swinging.
SMN with all six merit BPs unlocked is really the best DD on that NM that I've found. Avatars can tank it pretty well at 99, too. BLMs can do a ton of damage but just end up kiting.
