It's been two years since Devin and Matt from the North American Community Team set out on their adventure to Tokyo to cover VanaFest 2010 for the community. They were able to bring all of the hottest news straight from the development team to the adventurers around the world. In the two years since then, FINAL FANTASY XI has evolved by leaps and bounds and the level cap was raised to 99. Well, they too have leveled up to the max to bring you even bigger and better coverage this year.
Yes, the intrepid duo plan to set out once again on a quest to bring everyone the hottest news, craziest revelations, jaw-dropping-est... things that happen at VanaFest 2012! You better believe that there will be tweets. You can guarantee that there will be videos. And you can bet that there will be contests!
Stay tuned for all of the details as we unravel their plans for the future!
What this didn’t mention is that we will actually be live streaming the whole thing and giving Community Team digests covering the information and exciting things taking place at the event!
Hope you are all looking forward to this and we will be giving you updates as the event draws near! ------------------------------------------------------------------- Also one other thing I would like to add!
VanaFest 2012 will be taking place (in JST) from 9:00AM-5:00PM on 6/23 (Saturday) and 9:00AM-6:00PM on 6/24 (Sunday), which means that for our North American audience, the event will be starting on Friday, June 22 at 5PM and on Saturday, June 23 at 5PM (PST). Hopefully this will be a convenient time for our players to tune-in to the live stream and check out the event!
To whet your appetite a bit on this lovely Tuesday, I have two things to share with you.
In case you are planning to tune in to the VanaFest 2012 live stream, I figured it might be a good idea to give you all a nice schedule so you can plan accordingly. *Please note event times are subject to change.
One of the things they will have on tap at VanaFest is a café consisting of food found throughout Vana’diel. Many of which I am sure you have consumed in-game. Our counterparts in Japan are working with top chefs and experimenting with only the most delicious ingredients to bring the flavor of Vana’diel to life.
Here is an example of one of the many dishes they have perfected.
Ah yes, the legendary meat mithkabob. How fondly I remember ingesting this protein rich treat as a young adventurer while leveling in Valkurm Dunes!
Anyone want to take a guess as to what real life ingredients were used to make this? (I suppose if you can read Japanese you can find the answers on the Japanese forum, but that’s no fun!)
• Kazham Pepper = Shish*to pepper • Mhaura Garlic = Regular garlic. (duh?) • Wild Onion = Regular onion. (duh?) • Cockatrice Meat = A combination of chicken and duck. Not blended together...Different chunks!
If having an issue with card rejected, make sure your noscript is allowing globalcollect site gcsip.com as that is where transaction is routed when I updated.

Mighty tasty, but only problem is you're hungry again 30 minutes later.

Go for the Sophic Stew. At least you'll get the benefit of being a physics major for the next four hours! Watch all the mage cosplayers go for the sweets!
With a multitude of delicious treats from around Vana’diel, the VanaFest attendees will surely need something to quench their thirst and wash down all of those mithkabobs!
Our top chefs are putting their hearts and souls into creating the most refreshing beverages, and as such they have to try and test a variety of combinations to refine the flavor.
Below is their latest experiment:
Can anyone guess as to what this might just be?
Answer: If you guessed Goblin Drink, you are correct.
As this is originally a vegetable based drink, one of the earlier versions passed the taste test of some of our top staff (including Tanaka-P himself), but a majority of the taste testers claimed that it was a bit too vegetable-tasting for their palettes. As a result, the taste was refined so that it would be appealing to a larger amount of people.
Now, if you are familiar with the Goblin Drink recipe, many of you might be wondering about how we went about the Elshimo Newt ingredient. Take a good close look at the picture and you should be able to see a powdery substance floating on the surface of the drink. Well, we went ahead and incinerated…. I kid, I kid! Why would we do that? We wouldn’t want the drink to be some Chinese medicine drink We used another type of powder, which we will disclose at another time, perhaps on the Community Team VanaFest stream.
Are any of you making plans with your friends to watch the stream? Hopefully these posts giving insight to the food will spur some creativity and motivation to make tasty snacks to be eaten while soaking up all the stream content. Some of you have already posted some pretty interesting (and delicious sounding) recipes!
I can go ahead and tell you that Bayohne and I have a lot planned for the Community Team stream during VanaFest, so we both hope everyone is looking forward to it!
Continuing in the trend of Goblin-related goodies, our chefs have mastered the secret Goblin techniques for synthesizing chocolate and have re-created the infamous Goblin Chocolate!
It can be assumed that the Goblins were bested in some form of gambling and lost the rights to their exclusive recipe, but that is the nature of the beast, as they say!
The outside is as I am sure you can all guess…chocolate. The inside is a bit more of a mystery! The chocolates are served in a fancy glass with four pieces. Two of them contain sunflower seeds, while the other two have another special ingredient. If you recall, the original recipe calls for a good helping of Cobalt Jellyfish. Though it’s pretty common to eat jellyfish in Japan, they decided to be quite clever and use another ingredient to simulate that jellyfish texture: Tapioca!
Boba-choco anyone? (Though I believe they will use the smaller tapioca pearls.)
Stay tuned for more food updates! The next one is one of my personal favorite foods…
It might be Friday, but in my own personal world it’s taco Tuesday every day of the week!
Shovel down these Windurst Tacos and sharpen your sight! This one shouldn’t be too hard to make for yourselves at home while watching the live stream and I am sure all of you creative players can find ways to kick it up a notch as well. Instead of the hare meat that is required for the recipe in-game, we decided to go with a more mainstream type of meat…chicken.
One interesting thing to note, though the icon for Windurst Tacos seems to make it look like they would be a crunchy, hard shell taco, they are actually soft! Though it probably would have been a bit more convenient as a burrito so people could walk around without worrying about dropping it or succumbing to taco neck syndrome, we decided to keep it as it was in-game to once again bring Vana’diel to life.
Our delights from the land of Vana’diel seem to never end and I have yet more goodies to share with you all. As a side note, I am actually writing this on a completely empty stomach, making me want to Doomvoid any food or drinks that comes withinrange of my cubicle.
Before I introduce the menu for today, I have a couple of comments.
First, as it turns out we are not using chicken for the Windurst Tacos and are “keepin’ it real” by using actual rabbit meat. For a taco connoisseur like me, this will be a first and sounds quite interesting.

Hook me up with the recipes or release a cook book!
While I am not quite sure about the possibility of releasing an actual published cook book, there might be a chance we can do some research to get more insight into the recipes and thought put into these dishes and drinks. In the meantime, if you are really itching to try these out for yourself, I recommend taking a look at the in-game recipes, the information I have posted regarding the ingredients, and improving it a bit to suit your tastes! If you actually make something at home related to these foods or other Vana’dielian meals, post-em up so we can see! (Pics or it didn’t happen )
Now then, onto the yummy stuff. This was a tough one and we took some creative liberties, but we managed to come up with a good real life version! It probably goes without saying, but the first problem was procuring some Nebimonite, as it does not really exist. We scavenged the seven seas to find something close to it and as a result we decided to utilize nautilus shells to simulate the shape of a Nebimonite (Just decoration basically!).
Since we felt that it wouldn’t be very fun or interesting to just bake some seafood in a shell, we thought it would have a bit more impact if we served it via a plate of paella. What you see emerging from its shell is supposed to be Nebimonite meat, but it is actually an arrangement of various kinds of seafood. Rumor has it the entire dish is quite large and could be shared between two adventurers, but if my current hunger has anything to say about that I could probably down two plates myself.
To wash it down and clear your palette of that seafood flavor, we will also be serving the MP invigorating Yagudo Drink.
Based on the color of the drink and the knowledge that it is fruit juice based, what do you suppose we used for each of the ingredients?
Yagudo Cherry = pink grapefruit juice
To give the drink and taste a bit more of a jolt and texture, we also added some grenadine syrup and blueberry jam!
With VanaFest taking place right as summer begins and the humidity in Japan climbs to levels which make you feel like you are in a swimming pool the moment you step outside, a couple more fruity beverages are always a good idea to have on hand to aid adventurers in need of refreshment!
The first food item has very nostalgic significance to me and makes me recall my days as a wee adventurer, when I just started playing FINAL FANTASY XI. Can anyone guess what that item could be?
Sweet sweet Persikos Au Lait! Oh the memories!
This sounds so noobie, but I remember dumping gil on this, Yagudo Drinks, and other supplies to take on the level 20 solo avatar battles. Just me, Carby, and a sack of food/medicines. It seems like eons ago!
While this recipe actually calls for Selbina Milk, we decided to use a drinkable yogurt base that is mixed with a peach juice blend. The reason why we opted for this instead is because there are quite a few people who do not like milk, or prefer not to drink it.
“To Bee or Not to Bee?” is the question that needs to be answered for this next drink. We managed to completely re-create this quick MP recovery drink, using some tasty grape juice, water, and a hint of honey!
Forget about grape soda, we got Mulsum!
To wrap this post up for today, I leave you with one more treasure from the menu of the Vana’diel Café!
Camate here again to bring you yet more real-life renditions of delicacies from Vana’diel!
Curry Buns anyone?
I find it ironic that one of the most popular attack enhancing foods adventurers choose to chomp down are donuts stuffed with delicious curry filling. I couldn’t imagine eating a curry bun as my pre-workout meal to get me fueled up! But alas, it is a world of fantasy after all! Don’t get me wrong though, it is probably one of the most delicious foods on Earth (and in Vana’diel).
Not only will we be featuring the affordable Yellow Curry Bun (upper left), we will also have the fancier Red Curry bun (lower right) as well. To make the Red Curry Bun, the whole development team was asked to go camp a dragon for a couple of hours to procure its meat. Apparently it didn’t turn out so well. They came back dragon meat-less, but had some good ideas for a substitute. What they chose is still a secret at the moment, but I hear that both buns are in fact delicious!
If you are like me, the instant you finish something spicy or salty, you feel a strong urge to eat something sweet. Well the Vana’diel café has adventurers with a sweet tooth covered.
We are offering this nifty, perfect triumvirate of mini-desserts!
Think you can guess the name of each of these savory sweets?
Left/Middle/Right: Need more MP? Not a problem! This Rolanberry Pie has got you covered This stuff is pamamas! P-A-M-A-M-A-S. Pamamas Tart! (Sorry, sorry! I HAD TO!) When you fear a certain monster, the best way to overcome it is to make food that symbolizes said monster and straight up eat it! Can’t go wrong with some Black Pudding. I said there were three mini-desserts, but I actually lied. The 10th anniversary logo is actually edible and made out of white chocolate
With the mere mention of the name of this next exquisite entrée, I fear that this thread will be flooded with a variety of clever posts that take well known movie titles, book titles, and other things, and replace a portion of it with the name of this famous creature of Vana’diel.
So I’m not even going to say the name! Nope!
Delicious ______ Stew!
Based on the recipe, clearly this stew needs the meat of the creature that shall not be named (seriously, if you haven’t figured out which creature I am talking about by now…). So what did we do to replicate it? Well that’s easy! Camels We will be serving two different kinds of stew, one that features beef and another version that uses the slightly more eccentric camel meat. I wonder if it tastes like chicken…
Since it’s just not good form to eat stew without some kind of bread to complement it, our stew has been graciously paired with some Iron Bread. We did our best to select a type of bread that we felt resembled the classic hard-baked Galkan bread, and it is perfect for dipping, dunking, or scooping up the sauce.
VanaFest 2012 is drawing ever nearer and the Community Team is working at full speed to get everything prepared to bring the fun and excitement of VanaFest into the comfort of your own homes! As previously mentioned, Bayohne and I will be broadcasting live from the venue, giving a breakdown of the dev panels, history panel, and showcasing all the other activities that take place. All of you will be able to watch both the main stage stream (this will only be provided in Japanese) as well as the Community Team stream (English). So with that said, we’ve gone ahead and prepared a comprehensive schedule that gives the times for both of these streams side-by-side.
Even when we are not streaming (annotated by "OFFLINE" in the schedule) we will still be giving updates via Twitter, the forum, and other means, so everyone can follow along with the main stage content in real-time (or as close to humanly possible!).
I can tell you that we have been looking over the announcements here at the office and the excitement is already through the roof. Take a look at the schedule and starting making plans to check out the streams! You won’t want to miss a second of it!
I guess it's about time to spill the beans (I promise not to troll this time).
Entering the Runic Gate I was transported to Heroine's Tower (tentative EN name), the new battlefield we will be debuting at VanaFest 2012. (Never fear, we have some plans on making this special event available outside of the event, too!)
Upon further exploration I found myself before an intimidating foe that I think you should all be familiar with: P.S.: I turned into a female.
I can tell you that there is more than just Lion to fight (the other NPCs are a secret for now though!), and also that it's more involved than just running in and fighting the famous heroine NPCs.
Personally I was quite impressed with Lion and the other NPCs' animations when I tried it out myself.
We plan on passing out a lot of the items which give access to this battlefield so that a large amount of players can experience and enjoy it!

It be cool to meet an admir and discuss ffxi. Or maybe the website will hire me.
Kimjongil76, I have said repeatedly that we aren't sending people over there to cover VanaFest. I don't know where you get the idea that we are, because I've said a number of times that we aren't. As for the website hiring you, we aren't hiring new staff members, nor are we any time in the near future. Even if we were though, I wouldn't be able to recommend you for the position due to issues that have risen in the past regarding your conduct on the site. I won't go into any details on the matter, but that's not the kind of individual we'd be looking for if we were hiring.
..does that mean I can meet Vlorsutes, Lord of Stuff..
I want to meet him too! He sounds so dreamy!
Let's start a fan club and screech like Japanese anime girls whenever he posts!

We are all getting quite psyched over here for VanaFest 2012 and with only 10 days until we start streaming the event I wanted to give you all a full breakdown of each segment of our Community Team live stream.
So without further ado…
Development Team Talk Sessions
The development and operations team will be discussing the future of FINAL FANTASY XI and all the plans they have in store for the game. There will be two sessions taking place on each day of the event, and each session will contain different content. Bayohne and I will be appearing shortly after the Japanese dev talk sessions conclude to give a full English breakdown of all the announcements and to discuss the content. If you are looking to see some big announcements, be sure to watch this portion of the stream!
“Project XI” – FINAL FANTASY XI Director’s Panel
This is a special retrospective on FINAL FANTASY XI, looking back to its early planning stages and its decade journey of growth through the years. The panel will feature a host of directors and developers that will share a wealth of secret dev stories. Similar to the dev talk sessions, Bayohne and I will appear shortly after the Japanese session concludes to give a comprehensive summary of all the juicy details!
Battlefield Coverage
The development team has created a brand-new battlefield, “Heroines’ Tower” (English name pending), and VanaFest attendees will be going head to head in a time trial challenge. We will be doing our best to capture some of the competition as well as show off the battlefield that lies beyond the Runic Gate.
Cosplay Contest
What’s a FINAL FANTASY XI event without a cosplay contest? We will be covering the VanaFest 2012 cosplay contest and discussing the attendees’ creative costumes.
Trans-Vana’diel Vrtra Quiz
The Trans-Vana’diel Vrtra Quiz is a game show style quiz event which will test the attendees’ knowledge of FINAL FANTASY XI. Follow along as we relay the questions (and of course the answers) in English on our stream to see if you are the Vana’delian scholar you imagine yourself to be.
Foods of Vana’diel
In case you haven’t seen the 100+ some odd posts about food I’ve already made… We will be showing off and taste testing a plethora of foods from Vana’diel with detailed descriptions of their ingredients
Special Guest Talk
We'll be speaking with a special guest during the first day of VanaFest! Look forward to it!.

I think this answers your question precisely both of them..
I kind of wish this was an actual end game event now haha.

btw whos that samurai chick in the cop section background? I dont remember any samurai chick.
She was much more active in ToAU storyline then CoP I don't know why they put her there. Cause even in Toau she didn't do all that much besides show up out of no where act all bad ass then go back to Jueno without accomplishing anything but being ominous hahaha.(One of the things I really hate about ToAU is how much Bastok representative drew the short stick in the storyline. Ultimately we end up with the lowest ranking mythril musketeer who accomplishes nothing more then acting as a medic when the airship crashesXD)

If any of you guys are able to ask questions, I think asking how much money FFXI made for SE over the years would be a good one, particularly relative to FFVII or even a top 3 list of the games that made the most money for Square-Enix. It would be helpful to know since no one knows how much money FFXI made for SE or if it made more money for SE than even FFVII did.

================================================= Somewhere out there, there is a road with 2 signs on it. One says "No Trespassing". The sign right next to it says "FREE KITTENS". =================================================
FFXI has been around ten years. It currently has 150K subs, but at its peak SE claimed a million subs, with the average falling around 500K subs a few years back.
Lert's be modest and assume an average of 250K subscriptions, total, each month.
For base accounts alone, at 12.95 a month, that's 3.2 million dollars a month. Times twelve months. Times ten years. That's 388 million dollars, if I did my math right.

I'm almost positive they wouldn't ever release this kind of thing, company financials are usually kept private.
Slight schedule change - outlined above! We figured you guys have seen just about enough of some of the foods that will be on hand at VanaFest, so we decided to wrangle in a special guest for that time slot to discuss some of the day's big announcements!
Just making a small thread to let you know that the European Community Team published some pictures of VanaFest 2012! More pictures will be added during the event as well. Head to European Square Enix Members website to see them!
And don’t forget, the North American Community team will be broadcasting live from the venue this weekend! Head over to the official VanaFest 2012 Site to watch it!
Don't spose it possible to record both streams. I'll unfortunately be at work for all but the last 2 hours. I'd call in sick but..I'm the only one working tonight that can lock up.

I wouldn't worry they will be archiving the stream on their Youtube channel for those who can't tune in live.
