Viewing Maps of other areasFollow

Though it's not exactly new "news", I thought it still merited being posted.

From the official Final Fantasy XI forums:

Viewing maps of other areas

Greetings!

The other day on the JP forums there was a suggestion to make it possible to view maps of other areas by selecting the map from the key item list. The development team decided to look into it and while they are still discussing this more in depth, they came up with a couple of ideas.

• Viewing the map of other areas
We are discussing to see if it's possible to view the map of other areas by preparing an area-selection interface similar to the area search and display the map of the area players select. There are areas with multiple maps, but for these we are considering to display the map of the area in order.

• Markers on maps of other areas
We are also looking into whether or not it's possible to place markers on the maps of other areas when displayed. We are starting to see some possibilities so the design is being worked on at the moment. As long as everything goes well, you will not only be able to view the map of other areas, but also place markers on them as well.

However, in regards to sharing the marker placement with party members or displaying the location of party members in other areas on the map, this would be difficult since the method for handling the data in multiple areas needs to be solved first. We will continue to look in to the possibility, but please understand that this is quite difficult to make happen.

• Balance Adjustments
Along with the discussion on the feedback we have received, we are also reviewing the balance on acquiring the area maps. As of now, the methods on how to obtain maps vary depending on the area. Some you can purchase from NPCs, while others you receive as a reward for completing quests. Overall, we would like to make them easier to obtain.

Once we get some more information on the solidified plans we will be sure to let you know.

The only maps I think are really too hard are the Promyvions. I know of exactly two people who went through the effort back when it was level capped to get those maps.

The only way I could have considered this being any useful is if, say, you could click on a point on a map that leads to another zone and it would bring up the map of that new zone, showing you the point at which you would enter. If I recall correctly, the map system in FF12 worked like this.

Because it's IMBALANCED that for most of the CoP maps, which are generally some of the most useless maps, it takes probably the most effort to obtain.

Why?
Because it's a friggin map, not Excalibur.

I know they won't do it, because it will take actual time and developer/artist resources, but I'd like the maps to be revised to be complete, without missing parts or details. The ability to view all maps from anywhere is kinda neat, but I'm not sure I'll use that feature much.

Because by the time you actually obtain some of the more difficult maps to get, you already know the area well enough that you don't need the map. And that's just silly.

The .DAT file folks have had a solution to that for a loooong time in the form of Map Pack.

When I want to view a map of a zone that isn't the one I'm in, I go to wiki. Not only that, but some of the maps (promies, tavnazia sewers) are pretty crappy compared to the wiki versions. Hey, devs, want to fix some real UI problems? (for instance, letting us use the keypad to enter AH prices?)

Nah, I did it the moment it was uncapped, and there's only one zone where the ??? can go behind high level mobs. And it wasn't too hard to ninja it solo. The only map I don't have is that Ballista zone, because you have to have Ballista points to get in and... nobody does Ballista anymore, so you can't get Ballista points. (and they'll probably never play it on a regular server now that they've figured out to do it on the test server)

You mean XI Vision? Because many of those maps contain errors and are still incomplete, not to mention the numerous giant shaded circles and red text everywhere obscuring half the map. Don't get me wrong, they're great, but still could use some improvement.

What about easy to obtain, yet time consuming maps like Crawler's Nest?

I say they make all of them purchasable at 10,000g per map. Current quests or coffers that result in a map reward could be changed to give that amount.

I also second the notion about redesigning some of the confusing/unclear maps (Elshimo maps, Attowah Chasm, maps with "burn spots," etc).

You gotta figure SE has to have some maps somewhere of the actual zone layouts. They may not be in .dat form, but they have to exist or at least did at some point. They did have to create the zones after all. At the very least they could do a virtual flyover of the unmapped portions and either redo the incomplete maps or edit the existing ones. I dunno, it may be more complicated than I think, but it shouldn't exactly be rocket surgery.
