Some Questions About Jobs/Old School FFXI Partying LS?Follow

I haven't played this game in a long time and I really have no idea how the jobs have been effected by the cap increase or the changes to the game over the years. I'm strongly considering coming back though, after being disappointed by both FFXIV and the Tera beta and I was considering which jobs I might enjoy these days.

What I was curious about was:

Which DDs are actually useful at this point? I've always liked DRK but I've heard DRK is gimpy job now? I remember DRG being lol'd at all throughout my playing career, but I had always thought it looked fun.

Is PLD still a useful job, or is everything blink tanked these days? What is a PLD's role nowadays? I always, always wanted to play PLD and never got around to it.

Basically if I had to pick two jobs out of: DRG, SAM, DRK, PLD which ones would be the most useful, or at least allow me to get some invites once I reach endgame?

Also, is there anyone - a LS perhaps - on any server that plays the game the old school way, with 6 man parties, at least up until you hit the 50s and start trying Abyssea? Call me crazy, but I actually miss the crabs in the Dunes and mandies in the Jungle. I think it would be a BLAST to find some like-minded players and play through some of the "outdated" content. If such a group of people exists, I would definitely return to play with them.

They will all allow you to get invites on a regular basis given the nature of Voidwatch. Dragoon, Samurai, and Dark Knight are all top tier damage dealers when played right (that's more of a player issue than faults of the jobs). Dark Knight, with the new G.sword weaponskill Resolution, is a very powerful job offensively, and Dragoon has been a strong DD contender for awhile, especially after the retooling of two-handed weaponskill damage several years back and the implementation of Drakesbane. Samurai has pretty much always been a strong DD (some would say overpowered and SE's favorite, but to each their own).

Paladin is still used nowadays for Voidwatch and Legion stuff, primarily because the mobs being tanked by them hit too hard/fast for anyone to blink tank. However, this usually limits it to being Aegis and Ochain Paladins only, as opposed to Paladins in general.

There was, on Titan.

It failed.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but this linkshell is just as dead as this thread(or was now). I was in it for a few months then it just fell apart and like all people who return/start FFXI, they turned to abyssea. Including myself.

If you can't beat em', join em'! FoV has no sense of adventure and is pretty mindless, but honestly, Abyssea isn't that bad. It's good fun when you have a linkshell to experience it with. Think of it as revisiting the old FFXI zones but in an alternate reality! :) A bit of the old with some new mixed in.

Craine last time I was on it seemed like my ls was good and dead or I would invite you to hang out with us on asura. I remember you from the kraken club ls on rab... Anyway if you ever want to be a noob in EQ2 with me, let me know, as I am currently soloing up a storm. I accidentally created my first char on a different server than I wanted to so would love to roll another on everfrost.

If I was playing ff more I would totally be willing to try to put together some non traditional style 6 man parties (hybrid of gov/fov and old style) I don't miss the exp of old parties but I do miss the team work. There is probably enough nostalgia out there to shout a few people up.

When it comes to sitting around not doing anything for long periods of time, only being active for short windows, and marginal changes and sidegrades I'd say FFXI players were the perfect choice for politicians.

I'm with ya for the nostalgia. But the exp rate has been buffed so much even without doing FoV pages. Every couple of hours you would be buying new gear and moving to another zone to level. You'll spend as much time traveling as you will leveling (Slightly exaggerated)

I'm as old as the rest wearing rose colored glasses here and I'll say I don't think it's possible to level the old way.

Hear me out. I recently set up 2 new accounts (one on my PS3-don't ask why). Using my main and these 2 doing FoV/GoV as a trio, the xp comes way too fast. And that's keeping level close or sync'd to keep it interesting, instead of what the face-smash groups in Z.Mines/etc are doing. I've actually decided to break xping down into chuncks. First, get both to lv20 and do all the basics. Then take breaks around each 10 levels and work on content/gear(ra/ex stuff). That way, I still kind of get that old progress feeling and my stubbern "Don't want my guys looking like gimps" thinking. Certainly there will be those spots I'll hold off on, some of the missions/etc that will be less stressful if they are a bit higher level. But I think I can get some enjoyment out of it for me.

Even if that's true, I feel like it would be okay. Doing ~11-18 in Valkurm in an hour or two, moving to Quifm/Tower for 18-25 and then doing Jungle for 25-35 and C-Nest afterwards would be a blast from the past, even if it only took a day or two. I know it would be inefficient and I certainly wanted to level, level, level as fast as possible when I first played, but looking back now, those were the best months I ever spent in ANY MMO. I'd rather settle for sub-standard exp rates and re-live those experiences than page burn in Gusgen and then key in Abyssea. I mean, it is what it is and I'm sure I'll end up doing pages in Gusgen and then pages in C Nest, but it would be a lot more fun to have some traditional parties where you actually have to earn your exp, rather than just merking things in an alliance for pages. I'm not going to complain about it if there's no one to set those traditional parties up with; there's enough content in this game for me to explore that even if I zip through the levels and end up soloing things that used to be challenging, I'll still enjoy most of the actual content, but it would have been cool to re-live the old times a bit.
