I was wondering if anyone can help me out with this. I am planning on returning to FFXI and I was hoping I didn't have buy the game again. I have all the original DVD/CDs, the 4 CD FFXI, Chains or Promeathia, Wings of the Goddess and Treasure of Aht Urhgan. For some reason the game didn't start last time I installed and try run the game. Maybe its a Windows 7 incompatibility thing or something but I couldn't get it to start. And lastly, is there anything else that I need for the game to function smoothly, i.e. mods, updates, patches or new expansions if any? Thanks. Can't wait to get back to FFXI.

In addition to the disks, you'll need to download POL for Windows 7 from SE's website. As long as you can access your account, you should be able to start the game then. This torrent will be able to speed up the update process, which will probably take 10+ hours otherwise.

Since Wings of the Goddess, a few mini-expansions have also been released, so you will want to buy registration codes for at least the Abyssea ones. I think it's cheapest to just pick up the ultimate collection from Amazon or Steam.

Niknar just saved you. The Abyssea Edition is definitely the one you want. It is a travesty that they even sell the other one (which is just what you already have)

Ok, registering everything is such a pain. Why couldn't SE or Playonline or whoever the damn it is just keep it simple.

I often wondered if they intentionally made the registration process as painful and lengthy as possible to deter new players so they would instead opt to play Final Fantasy XIV instead. The upside of the latter at least is there's no fiddling around with PlayOnline, though the gameplay has a way to go before it's up to par.

Alright, I give up. I figure coming back to FFXI would be easy but I guess I was wrong. So many god damn complications. Maybe I'm stupid or something or maybe it's not possible in the first play, but I want to to activate my extremely old Playonline account that I used back in 2003. I just bought the new Ultimate Collection Abyssea or whatever its called, registered that in my SE account that I created for FFXIV awhile back but I can't registered my old Playonline account due to an wrong password, which is 100% correct. I've spent hours trying to figure this out but I'm to the point of punching the next Malboro I see.

Oh that sucks.... I don't know what the solution is. I usually just muddle around in their labyrinth maze of suck until I figure crap out. SE often provides examples of why monopolies are bad. Seriously, if it wasn't for the fact that games aren't exactly interchangeable widgets, I would never buy anything from the company because of its terrible service.

If you haven't played in an extremely long time and I remember correctly, SE force changed account passwords some years back when there was a huge rash of hackings. I believe they had set a deadline to have the players change it, if not they did and locked the accounts down. I believe that was around the time the security token was released.

Could be wrong though, mind is fuzzy with age. Might be worth a call to see if they can reset it. As long as you have all the original disks and your codes, shouldn't have any issues.

Its possible your old account was hacked / used by RMT, and they would have surely changed your password. Not saying this is the case but its possible.

Also, as other people have said, you have to make a SE account from your POL ID, which can be done here. Before you do that though just make sure your account wasnt hacked. You may have to call SE to see if it was.

If it was hacked.....its not too bad starting all over. Your new registration codes you just bought will support a new account anyway, and levelling to where you were back in the day will probably only take you a month or two at most.

More like a week or two.

leveling, maybe a week or two, depends on breaks. The quests and other unlocks take a lot longer, however.

Oh for sure, I decided to reinstall last night, and I have all the original discs from launch, and then each expansion, and then the day long update. Decided to just buy the Abyssea edition from SE, 2 hours later it was installed and updating. That was definitely worth the $20.

I was chatting in-game with someone a he or she said Windower is allowed. So, to be sure, Is Windower allowed or will you get banned for using it?

The unofficial Windower is against the rules. It is possible to be banned for using it. This is fact.

Of course, no one has ever been banned for simply using Windower* and I have never been approached by a GM even after 8+ years of using the unofficial Windower.

EDIT: This isn't an exaggeration either, anyone that says otherwise was using something else as well such as speed hacks or walking through walls.

if you having problems getting your old char back etc and you didn play in over 4+ years or a long time. it would be best to just start over. way to much have changed anyways had a rdm 65 friend that didn play since the Wing of the goddess came out. had to be over 4 year or so

you would see a big change at low lvls, how fast, fun things can go while you catching up on the updates info:)
