The Muse and the Bard have embarked on a quest to educate the Fae about the importance of the witches in the human realm. But the Huntress and her brother, the Fire Lord, are intent on making them outcasts to their own race. Diana, the Huntress, is learning how much she misses the witches, however. When Ari is taken by the Witch's Hammer, Diana finds that she has to stay at Ari's cottage to hold Tir Alainn aloft, but she chafes under her new job and tries to trick other Fae into taking her place.

But the Bard and the Muse, learning that their race is too arrogant to listen to anything they have to say, have decided to venture to the Western Clans, where they find the Fae are very, very different from what they are used to. There they find Morag, the gatherer of souls, and her sister, Morphia. They also find a pleasant and unexpected surprise waiting for them.
