Nice vid and all but you are a relative noob when it comes to MMO's. Anyone that started with just WoW is pretty much a casual noob and will never understand us old timers and our love for MMO's that are HARD and promote a community feel rather than these hand holding amusement parks that you POST 2004 MMO kiddies grow up in.
So while you are dead on about the terrain issue and things that like...do a little reading before you play a game and quit expecting your hand to be held

Episode 41 - Final Fantasy XIV Square Enix's latest creation could quite possibly be the most polarizing release in recent MMO history. Apparently you never played WoW when it first came out. It got easier when BC came out but before that, it was HARD. And if he is a noob when it comes to MMOs that's a good thing because he's telling things like it is and any new people like that.

A. He stated it was a beta, so stop using the beta excuse.
B. FF is a great platform their online games though have been at the very least closed to people who dont like to level faster than 1 level every 2-3 weeks via daily quests.
C. Just be glad he didnt focus to much on the mob name vs how quickly it will rip your face off....(<--still cries at night about the bunny rabbits killing him in XI...and gary getting killed by a lady bug lol.)
D. Yes Mike plays more wow than other games, just like you(talking to the FF players) play more FF than other games. Hence yes in an unfamiliar world things look different. e.g. If i was to drop you in to Icecrown citadel with a level capped character infront of the Lich King and say, Fight him....hmm? you want to know how nah, why would you liketo know that.
The main point here is different people like different types of games and styles. Mike pokes fun in all his reviews its hard to say he is picking on FF because he is a Chinhawk of Flame and FF is his newest victim. FF has always been graphically amazing thats nothing new the main point to his review was how much was sacraficed to make it pretty when it comes to gameplay. Yes its pretty but imo I dont play a game to have to run through filler zones to get to the next quest because the game developers though it was to easy and didnt want to "spoon feed me" the quest by making it relativly close to the point i recieved it. Mind you many quests in omg im gonna say it WoW make you travel long distances. I dont do those quest. Will never do those quests...so i grind mobs.
Stop hating on the chin hawk or stop watching his videos, either way put the flame thrower away and play the game you enjoy to play.
P.S. If a game review stops you from playing a game grow a pair and use that wonderful thing called free will instead of being spoon fed opinions.

ok so its past the beta period now,
I love FFXI, I loved FFXIII I loved FFX, and X-2.
FFXIV, I’m 50% sure I’ll grow to love but atm, I feel like SE is pissing in my face.
the anticipation for this game was huge, for me personally I was gagging to get this game when it was releesed.
when I bought the game opening the box, all the Goody's SE gave me the flask, the diary, the DVD, everything was
totally awesome.
so I installed and played the game.
and when I started playing it was a bit laggy, I changed server and the problem went away, and is still getting even better.
I know FFXI, and this is a follow up MMO.
so I knew the mobs would be far and few between, I knew levelling would be a bit of a grind, I knew crafting would be important but difficult. I knew dealing with SE customer support would be bad.
so I was well prepared, and I overlooked everything, I also knew there would be copy pasted terain, I don’t mind tbh ^^
but I also know, that with FFXI it took them YEARS, to change simple things for the better.
FFXI took about 4 years to implement changed with crafting to make it easier, and enable you to choose if you want to make a regular item or try and HQ it, GENIUS! WONDERFULL.
and after years of player it was a sigh of relief.
so I’m thinking, when SE made changed to FFXI and sales went up and people came back to the game,
they obviously put those things that made FFXI so much more enjoyable in FFXIV right?
lol I mean they’d be stupid to forget everything they learned on FFXI.
but they did.
don’t get me wrong, it’s not the same game and some things can’t simply be carried over.
but the thinking behind some of the ideas.
I know its suppose to be difficult, it’s not a game for a quick pop in and play for 10 min
so its past Beta its had about 3/4 major updates and he's what I (no not a journalist, but do I really need to have that title to be able to tell people how I, an SE fan FFXI fan found the game? NO)
quests, for the first 10 levels I do the same quests each day. bored.
targeting system, X to target near targetable, then tab.
(tough when most of the quests involve killing 2 mobs at once)
Retainers, Great idea for mules! but selling things? where? miles away opposite side of the City.
nope I think I’ll stick to looking in the bazzy's of PLAYERS who STILL sit in hallways of the places I TRAVEL THROUGH to find what I’m looking for, along with 90% of other players.
partying system in FFXI, there was one, in this they’ve made it more primitive and an even bigger hassle to use.
sorting of inventory come on, really? (they will obviously fix this in a simple patch, but the 8th's update didn’t fix it.. and no sign of it being fixed soon. Surprise, surprise.)
Crystals/resistances, ok iv made this point before. If I want Fire Crystals then I put all my resistances into fire. YAY fire crystals. but. not I’m only strong Vs Fire. so if I’m fighting something that doesn’t use fire attacks. I’m screwed. so the "Armoury system" there so proud of, seems broke.
these things aren’t problems because its "in beta" or even because its only just out of beta, these are issues that should have been dealt with prior to beta.
prior to release.
I want to keep playing and hoping they fix them and make the game I want to play, but knowing SE they won’t not for at least 2 years.
so I give myself another 2 or 3 months before I give in and cancel my subscription.
I feel let down by SE.

Ok, so I made an account just because I wanted to address one glaring fact about this game and WoW (And most other MMORPGs) that I think Mike B failed to mention.
Yes, most MMORPG's use excessive copying of Terrain in order to insure the game isn't too big, but I've never seen it to the extent shown in this video.
I've never had a chance to play FF14, but this isn't the first time this issue has been brought up. I've seen people talking about this problem on various other mmo sites (Such as MMORPG.com), so this isn't an issue that's unique to Fony, it's something that a lot of people had a problem with.
The thing is with WoW, when you're roaming the terrain, even when you're miles and miles away from any city or town, you have a good idea where you are. the caves might be the same, but Blizzard does a pretty good job at making the overall terrain of each zone look unique, and all of them have many planes of reference to help ease travel through these zones, from a monument to a natural structure.
And it's not just like this with WoW. Anarchy Online is going on 10 years, and it has a very well designed terrain.
The thing that got me about this was the fact that it looked like they didn't even try. It looked as if they made a few textures and terrain designs and put them through a terrain generator or something and said "Ok, here's this zone".
My first impression of this game is that they were really lazy when designing the world. And it's this kind of laziness that's going to make it slack.
As for the rest of the game, all I have to make my opinion on is what BFF showed in his video, and I don't believe I'll be buying this game. The game, despite the graphics, looks clunky and confusing. I'm all for complex games. I love Eve and still play Anarchy Online from time to time, but this just seems to breech the retarded levels of complexity.
Plus, the world is meh. It's beautiful, but it's a typical Asian fantasy setting. If I want to play that, I'll just pick out one from the huge list of F2P Asian MMORPG's.

I'm going to keep defending this MMO for a number reasons.
One - the standard edition hasn't gone live yet and it is most like that SE plans to have an update ready to go very shortly.
Second - the game was designed to more of an asian style MMO. If want to get the same old sort of experience you get with WoW or LOTRO your not going to get it because like FFXI, FFXIV is not the same old cookie cutter experience. It's a different MMO based on a number of fundamental differences from WoW and LOTRO.
Three - there are some issues which over all are very minor issues and will be patched very easily. For anyone who likes this style of MMO you're going to put up with them for the short while it's going to take them to patch it.
Four - consider the source. Most north american players have only experienced WoW and expect to get more of the same with a different game. It's easy for this people to disagree with something they don't understand. If it is not your kind of game fine, then don't play it, but we don't need trolls supporting threads of bad reviews based on a TON of false information.
Five - don't ruin it for others, just because you don't like this type of game doesn't mean your opinion is the word of god and have to spew your negitive demeanor all over the place.
Bottom-line - if you want something different and want to break away from the same basic MMO mold then you will really want to try FFXIV and see it through past some of the annoying parts.

Did you base this off of the Open Beta? The clues given by those brats (yes, I they are brats) were very specific. They literally tell you what emote you were supposed to use. Considering the discussion of the "lifted" NDA, I would assume so. Maybe it'd be better if this were done a month down the line.
As far as the land goes, yeah.. it is a bit disappointing, but luckily it's not hard to put out of mind.

I know this is like my 3rd post asking this but please do a review on Runescape.
Even though it isn’t in beta it has had some big releases lately like Dungeoneering.
It may have a bad rap, but Jagex has greatly improved it since its release in 2001.
This game literally is the most popular F2P MMO out there and that deserves a review doesn’t it?
It should be a more enjoyable experience than FF.

Hey, look, FFXIV is coming out. I remember XI, it was for hardcores only. The interface seems really complicated, and the gameplay is hard to understand and unintuitive...so I guess this game must be for hardcore players!
Wait a second...I can only quest a certain amount of the time, and the combat is slow. Additionally, I don't need to fight at all: I can fish or mine for my entire career...so I guess this game is for casuals?

Good review .. but its getting thrashed everywhere .. hes right the game is sub-par if best.
Its getting no more then a 6.0 .. and most of the time less in reviews.. all i got to say is they better pick up the pace and fix it.. so more then just the small fan crowd can look past everything wrong with it.
Anyone know how long its gonna last? .. my quess probally a long time since its enix .. and they seem to be pumping money into projects like that for years now... i say.. BRING OUT SOMETHING GOOD! .. miss when it was just square soft.

As fony said in the video much can be patched, but terrain? I really stopped giving two sh!ts about the terrain after playing. Every MMO has some kind of copy paste, why point it out now? I doubt anyone will stop copy and pasting at any point in any game.

You have to remember Mike B started this by doing “unbiased” AION reviews which did nothing but make fun of them. His reviews are always going to be biased and you know why people watch them? Cause what he says is F*cking true and hilarious.

Thanks for the review. It was hilarious and I laughed throughout...however reading some of the fanatical posts in response to the review proved to be even more entertaining. I have been playing Final Fantasy games since the early nineties (probably longer than many of these fanatics have even been alive) and have extremely enjoyed them over the years. That said, whether positive or negative, I still appreciate an honest opinion from other gamers. Some of us can actually formulate our own opinions while at the same time respecting other people's opionions, even if they are not in agreement with our own. Keep up the good work!

I am tired of these pseudo video blogging journalists that pass off beta footage as release footage just to discredit a game they don't like. This video is full of lies. The only thing thats correct is the copy and pasted terrain tiles.
If 90% of your video is wrong it's not an opinion or review. He is simply lying and this video should be taken down or at least have a note stating that it is based on BETA footage and for entertainment only.

The video is based on BETA! So everything you see there is not what you get when you buy the game. Thats not a lie as such but he is misleading on purpose as he never states this so called "review" is based of beta gameplay 4 weeks old.
1. The walk takes less than 3 minutes and you can instant teleport once you visited there. You can also teleport back you don't have to walk back as he said.
2. You can turn off the "ready sound" and interface sounds in general. He says he wishes one could turn it off but it's probbly never going to happen with SE. Generalization and false facts.
3. The emote you have to do with the kids are in the text when you talk to them highlighted in ITALIC. It's not guessing and you don't need anyone to tell you the "clues". You just need to EFFING READ WHAT THEY SAY.
4. He says he can't continue doing anything until he finishes the quest. LIE. You can continue anytime, you don't need to complete the story line quest.
There is more of these facts based on beta gameplay that he uses for comedic effect. It's all WRONG.

There is a "quest helper system", it's called the tutorial and first quest. It even shows you how to use emotes, how escort quests work, how you find things on the map, how the Journal lists your quests and opens the map to show you where to go. Awesome helper system, but in order to understand it you have to read. Something that aparently most players that are crying because you can not jump are not able to do.
Who said this game is a themepark? It's not at all a themepark.
What's wrong with the mouse? It works exactly like every other MMO mouse. In case you missed the memo: It has a hardware mouse.
You just made a fool out of yourself, not only by the drivel you post but also by your inability to form coherent sentences and the need to use multiple exclamation marks.

I read some of these posts but not all of them and I want to express my opinion.
I don't think Mike is a malicious person. I pre-ordered this game just like a lot of people expecting a great game. I thought I would love this game and I wanted to. However, this is awful. I stopped playing after day two.
Why? This is two-thousand-%*&^ing-ten. How can you release something like this? I see it has potential, like Mike said, through patching, to be great. The UI delays are HORRID to the point its practically unplayable. You know, honestly when I logged on, created a char and did the main quest I did enjoy it. Then I tried some class changing, adding some abilities to my bar and found it was just a hassle, delayed and clunky. Have you guys tried vendoring or even selling items through a retainer? It takes about 15seconds to sell an item because of the delays. Have you tried mining? Mining one node for 5 potential items takes close to 4 minutes because of delays. Don't you think thats out of control? Just a bit? People PAY FOR THIS. They log on to play a game that is ENGAGING. A game where you can log on and JUST DO WHAT YOU WANT TO DO. It is NOT possible like this. This is HORRID.
This game, like this, will not be successful and only be played by the same fanboys that stuck by FFXI knowing deep down that it was ridiculous and the menu based, laggy UI was outdated. AND THE BIGGEST THING? Eight years later and this UI is EVEN WORSE in terms of delays. We just took a step back in time with this. I agree with you 100%. The game is laggy and it's frustrating to sell stuff or mine/harvest/fight with this much lag. The UI i don't care much about, every game has it's own and it takes time to get used to. Took me longer to learn EvE Online as a matter of fact. The first two days... wait, hold on.
The game just released and there is lag? How dare SE have the game lag on release day when everyone is in the same zone doing the same things. I much rather sit in a queue or have the severs crash so i can't play at all. I want it to take 10 minutes to loot something like it did on WoW release, thats the way to do it! I demand SE makes NPC not appear because of lag and quests never finish because the mobs don't ever show up. Oh damn you SE! You are useless.

Maybe we are misunderstanding some things. Im not talking about UI lag as in latency. The UI lag I talk about is when you try to set skills, when you got to vendor and it just hangs for 5secs in between selling items. Im talking about UI delays not latency delays.

If they are then I don't have many problems with this game right off the hop. But, I dont think this is server side lag. I think that it was MADE this way like FFXI was with just random delays through the menu based crap.

Yes, it's server lag. If you are in a crowed area the menus take ages to pop up. Using a skill like harvesting a tree can take up to 1 minute. If there are 400-500 people in the zone it goes down the sh*tter. If you move to a less crowded zone it happens almost instantly, maybe 1 second delay.
For some reason it is much better in cities. I assume they have better servers for the City Zones than for the outdoor zones. It would make sense since outdoor zones will not be as crowded once the initial rush dies down and people spread out more.

If you want to know why the player is throwing rocks at the jellyfish, its because the player has chosen to be a miner as their starting profession, so the only attack they get is rock throw.

player friendliness = more players
graphics are the icing on the cake. gameplay must come first.
it may be 'intuitive' and friendly to veterans and people who are at least familiar to mmos, but its a major turn-off to newbies and people used to much more streamlined games. you can be as derisive as you like, but mmos are complex games and pretty intimidating to an absolute new user. i guess if you want to keep them out and deny Enix money and a growing playerbase though, that's cool.
if people enjoy this game, then so be it - you shouldn't have such a fervent need to defend it, or at least do it WELL. too many people defending this game have a really snotty and arrogant tone dismissing and putting down everyone else, and it doesn't help your case. you cry everyone else is being biased, when you're being the most so.
it's really unfortunate that fanboys will defend this to the point that they won't allow it to be critiqued. i'm sorry that you would rather have a game that stagnates rather than allowing it to improve, be fixed, and then really shine. pulling the 'its in beta'~ cry isn't really helping either. yes he's said repeatedly that fine, that's a somewhat viable excuse, but then if it's in beta there should be MORE of a cry to fix all of these problems before its release as alpha, while there's still time and while its much easier to fix than through major patches. who knows, maybe you'll even have to pay for that.
you can attack WoW all you'd like, but don't try to compare apples to oranges - terrain =/= buildings. buildings tend to look the same in localized areas, but that's really no excuse for allowing terrain to be so copied. in 'smaller' non-mmo games it can be much more viable to create more unique buildings, but in an mmo it would pretty much be a lot of useless data that bogs down the whole thing. it also makes your arguments look weak when you have to constantly discredit another game.
basically, if you don't really notice something in a game then that's when the designer did a good job. we noticed the copy-pasted caves in WoW, but not the buildings, because localized similar buildings feels natural and normal. we also did not notice copied world terrain because it doesn't happen, although there are some claims that it does.
judge this one for what it is and help it improve.
also, for the people jumping on his comment about how 90% of the pop are catgirls.. really? grasping at straws mang, learn sarcasms/don't take stuff so literally.

i have been reading all these coments, and i am suprised at the reaction to the copy and paste thing.
people are argueing over the diffrence between wow and this game. as it has been noted 6 years apart.
this game uses the same terain, wow has very little to no coppied terain.
before you argue that point, yse their are like 3-5 cave designs that get used over and over and most all the inns and other buildings have like 2-3 models.
their is a diffrence between copied terain and copied caves and buildings.
on another note, yes this game is still in beta, and just like wows curent beta, they both are missing things, and can both use changes.
someone above said wow is too simpe, i totally agree, and their makeing it more and more simple to the point i have been with wow for 4 yrs now and its gotten so simple im getting board with it.
yes this game doesn not have features and needs modifications but thats why its in BETA.
and mike b did have a one sided review, but its kind of right in that if a game that came out in 2004 can have a better user interface and questlines and terain design (not graphics) than a game that comes out in 2010 their needs to be some work done.

You guys need to stop embarassing yourselves like this. Why on earth would he have some kind of malicious agenda? He wants a good game just like the rest of us.
Face it, FFXIV is a disaster. It's just about as bad, NO, it's worse than Vangard SOH, and that was a major train wreck.
SE has done everything in their power to make this game as difficult and unrewarding as they possibly could have. They have NO CLUE as to what motivates players.
All I can say is thank god we DO still have WoW to play. It's getting old, and tired, but at least it's built by people with half a brain in their heads. People who understand that it's more satisfying to be rewarded for hard work than to be forced to pay to work for nothing.

Reviewers without an agenda dedicate a decent amount of playtime to a game, review the positive aspects of the game (and there are many) as much as what they find negative instead of concentrating as much as they cam on negativity, raging and nitpicking, and finally don't very conveniently "leak" the review before the game is even released and spam it anywhere they can.

I don't think I've ever seen so many strawman arguments and ad hominem attacks before in my life than in this thread lol.
I think the issue with this game is that while yes, its unfair to nitpick flaws in a beta, some of the flaws in this game are far more serious than mere nitpicks and should be pointed out to the unwary.
Yes, some of these problems can be fixed eventually. And the most serious flaw, the lack of a hardware mouse, has already been addressed.
I think this game can be saved, its just I dunno, given SE's track record in FFXI it seems they take a loooong time to fix things.

Let's put a little of perspective to this tranwreck of a "review":
- The "review" isn't even of the released game. He reviewed the beta a couple weeks ago.
- the goon purposedly "leaked" the review more than a week ago (on twitter), when the game wasn't even released, to try and get people to cancel their preorder. Real professional uh?
That shows quite clearly that he has a big agenda against the game (as the true wow fanboy that he is), and that's why he spends the whole time of the review nitpicking and raging about absolutely minor (or plain false) stuff.
Just look at how he begins the video. He says that he's using a pad because he "heard" that the mouse/keyboard controls are crap (yay, real professional there!), and purposedly slams the character against the wall multiple times just to try and show the controls much worse than what they are (you must be blind and stupid to do that so many times, and with a controller).
The whole "review" continues like that, with him purposedly looking for stuff to nitpick on, inventing it where there's none ("Oh my god! This bridge is too long! Rage!"), completely ignoring the many good sides of the game to try and give a completely negative image.
The raging about the allegedly copy/pasted terrain is another laughable overdramatization of something that's present (often much worse) in every single MMORPG out there, scratch that, in every game out there. It's actually unnoticeable in the game itself, unless one really gets hell bent to look for it purposedly, like everywhere else.
To put it down simple, this "review" is a complete misrepresentation of the game, born from an evident agenda, and you should take it with a BIG grain of salt, since it basically doesn't make a single good point.
Quite the loss of credibility for ZAM to host something something as misrepresentative, overly dramatic and often plain false as this.
As a more complete counterpoint you can read my personal beta impressions here. At least those aren't plagued by an overly evident agenda.

Now, is it a good game? Sure. I am sure there will be a VERY large following for it. I am also sure there are people out there for whom this game makes no sense. Trying to paint it in a wholly positive light like you seem inclined is fine for the fan-boys and others who are drawn to this kind of game. But you are deluding yourself if you think it's perfection. There are flaws. The copy/pasta is definitely one of them. It's also a BEAUTIFUL game. It uses a rather odd, or at least unintuitive, map. I gather from your review that the leveling pace feels good, as does combat.
Try to find some balance in your reviews. And don't go spreading lies in response to reviews that you don't agree with. Find the points of disagreement and focus on them and refute them. Or maybe you can't because the points are valid, in which case your only recourse is to attack them without evidence. HEY! THAT'S WHAT YOU DID HERE!

1: yeah, very smart to be able to jump down a stage into a bunch of table and people right?
2: the areas from which you can't step down are VERY limited into the game, and normally are no issue. You can easily step down/climb down most ledges that aren't too high (more or less an average sized character's shoulder level). So he basically nitpicked on something that's not represemnted through the game (probably because he didn't play enough to notice).
3: people with a brain, once they hit an invisible wall, will simply move over somewhere else, they won't slam inside it repeatedly to try and showoff the controls as bad.
4: Many LOVE the fact that you can't jump in the game. Personally, a game without stupid bunny hoppers all over the place is pure heaven.

There are flaws for sure, no more than the usual for a launch MMORPG. But the positives far outweight the negatives. Sorry FF XIV lovers, this review is spot on. You may feel differently, but the rest of the MMO world agrees with Fony: This is substandard, and sub par quality for SE and the industry as a whole when it comes to fun and game play.
User-unfriendliness, antiquated menu and interaction system, a horrible control scheme, unnecessary layers of skin to peel off just to interact with/attack/engage something, annoying interface sounds (especially during combat- I mean, really? Do I need to hear a loud immersion breaking beep/ping sound EVERY time I attack?), grindy combat, looooong walks, boring quests, unheroic fights with ladybugs and marmots/squirrel thingies that kill your heroic fantasy game character who just killed 3 wolves/warg creatures in the opening cinematic gameplay bit (I'm no fantasy hero, and I could completely wreck a squirrel in real life with my bare hands, not to mention an axe...), a useless map system, a confusing menu and character sheets, no tutorial or any real new user help, no voice sounds on characters outside of cut scenes during regular questing and town interaction (everything seems so dead... I'm not asking for SWTOR levels of voice acting, but at least WoW-like vocal prompts would be great here), and insane levels of overworld map and exploration zone copy pasting. All of the above are completely unacceptable for a AAA MMORPG or any type of game release from one of the largest developers/publishers in the world in the year 2010, or any other developer for that matter. I love FF just as much as anyone else, maybe more than most, but enough is enough. Stop defending SE and start asking for more and better quality from a developer who is MORE than capable of offering it. Do some reading and investigation, as you all claim to have done for FF XIV, and you'll find that WoW's overworld terrain is all painted/done by hand. Meaning that the terrain artists at Blizz took their time to create every part of each zone uniquely with attention to detail, placing each tree, mountain, rock, etc. They did not copy/paste. And THAT was in 2004/2005.

You left out a layer, friend, as did I, so I'll fill in the blanks for us both. =)
You select a target, then activate attack mode (useless step IMO), which really just means: ready your weapon, then press "X" to attack. But yes, you actually have to take a second to ready your weapon before you can attack. This is an actual step for combat to take place. Mind you this action/animation takes abut a second or two. Which reminds me that combat animations require you to be stationary, so those of us who enjoy more heroic, action fantasy combat will be disappointed to find that our expert archer must stand in place to fire arrows, and our swordsmen must stand still to swing their blades, you cannot attack on the move. Thanks for reminding me.
But the layers don't end in combat. No, and the snarky reply has inspired me to elaborate =)
To interact with Aetheryte, you cannot simply walk up to it an click on it. That's right, in the year 2010, on a game developed for the PC, you cannot actually click on an object that is near your character to interact with it. You must open your main menu and under the interactions tab, select Aetheryte and click. Unintuitive you say? Yep. The game forces you to click or select things two or three times where once would suffice.
As for the sound thing, could you explain exactly where under sound config the option to disable the sound that plays every time you select an attack skill to attack a target? That would be great =) Unless, of course, you actually mean I should turn down ALL sound, since, that would greatly improve my overall game experience... (Not). Hope you didn't post without thinking there. ;-)
Also, the game must be terribly fun for you considering your repeated posts defending it here. Have you logged as much time actually playing the game as you have defending/posting about it? No? If not, it's cool. I agree, posting comments IS more fun than FF XIV though =)

So the interface beep annoys you. How about trying the sound config in game and turning it off? Oh right, you just post without thinking, sorry.
You left out a layer, friend, as did I, so I'll fill in the blanks for us both. =)
You select a target, then activate attack mode (useless step IMO), which really just means: ready your weapon, then press "X" to attack. But yes, you actually have to take a second to ready your weapon before you can attack. This is an actual step for combat to take place. Mind you this action/animation takes abut a second or two. Which reminds me that combat animations require you to be stationary, so those of us who enjoy more heroic, action fantasy combat will be disappointed to find that our expert archer must stand in place to fire arrows, and our swordsmen must stand still to swing their blades, you cannot attack on the move. Thanks for reminding me.
Clearly you have not played or just want to rant about something that is not there. YOU DON'T NEED TO GO INTO ACTIVE MODE TO ATTACK. Just use ANY skill or ACTION on the mob and it automatically goes into active mode and attacks instantly. How effing hard is that to understand?

1. You DO need to go into active mode to attack. Sorry bud. If it doesn't involve multiple presses of a button, the LAYERS of ANIMATION still exist. Meaning, since you are such a dull blade, that your character, if he was sitting down, has to actually go through the standing animation, and the animation to take out his weapon, before actually hitting anything. It DOES NOT happen instantly. No sir. Wow and other action oriented MMOs do that instantly. This one does not. Oh, you also need to put away your weapon before you start regenerating HP after a fight. So let's not forget to do that... You know, because the fight isn't over until you put away your weapon because your ability to heal hinges on whether or not you are brandishing a weapon. Just thought I'd add that in there to really tick you off =)
2. There are plenty of ways to deal with crowed selectables in a game that don't involve excessive layers of commands and antiquated text menu driven nonsense. Welcome to 2010 and gaming on a PC.
3.Your sound solution would indeed rid me of the beeps and boops. It would also rid me of a lot of other sound effects that would serve to destroy immersion and enjoyment. Again, Fail. Don't worry, this one isn't just on your part though, it's the devs too. BRILLIANT solution though -.- (Not)

However, you get paid to do whatever it is you do when you aren't on your lunch break crusades, not do PR for FF and SE. Nope, wrong again and proves once more that you did not play the game. It does register the damage immediately but still plays the animation as it should. Awww...you have to put away the weapon to heal, how nasty. In other games you have to heal by sitting down or doing some other weird stuff. Nice try.

So, the interface sounds are destroying your immersion. It only gets rid of system sounds, yes the same as in Windows, it's even called system sounds there, what a surprise! Again, you have not even played and tried this. Why is it you need to comment on something you have no idea about? It was this statement that made me realize he was only playing the beta, so I pretty much didnt care abot anything else he said. Because in the beta, it was more vague.
Also all the zomg horible misspellings that needed to be pointed out because god knows every other game has perfect grammar and spelling, were all fixed at release including this horrible Treant word.
I love how he pretended he hadn't already played, and was magically figuring everything out to do in an instant at the begining. I just felt like he was hoping we were all too stupid to realize he didnt know what he was talking about/playing the beta.

WindowerXIV was made to support people who want to play the game in fullscreen without the risk of crashing when they ALT-TAB out. This is a very common problem amongst people with multiple monitor setups that also existed in XI. The fact that SE has yet to address this problem backs me up when I say that this game is unfinished and was clearly rushed, but Ill settle with, "they don't care" if you'll agree.
You are sensationalizing most, if not all, of my points in an attempt to discredit the entire episode. I won't badger you by breaking the entire thing down with my points, as I feel that the majority does, in fact, agree with me. This does not devalue your opinion, mind you, as you are completely entitled to it here on ZAM, and I weigh all past criticism with the intentions of preventing myself from becoming too biased in future reviews.

As funny as this review was, it was completely unbalanced, and clearly written with the 'intention' of creating a bad impression.
It focussed almost entirely on the bad aspects of the game, and glossed over any of its positive aspects. Some of the things you wrote about have actually been changed; for example, when you die it now tells you how to return to your home point. Although I won't argue with that cut and paste doesn't exist, I will say that i hadn't noticed it until it was pointed out; WoW however, had copy/paste everywhere and I noticed it all the time; I can't count the number of times I've seen the exact same castle appearing in Azeroth, BC and NR areas.
I for one like the scale of the world, but can appreciate that others might think it too big.

I liked the game pretty much, after realizing it is just a game and not my life i decided to stick with it. I would say the copy and paste is a bit much but after realizing the cutting edge graphics and vast zones i let it go. Because if i were a graphics designer no way in hell would i be designing EVERY single terrain in graphics like those. Maybe in WOW shade graphics but no way on this.
And as for the walking it is a bit of a hassle but then again i don't want to finish everything in the first month and not get my moneys worth. The fighting system is excellent but could use some tune ups. I am sticking with it to see what it'll come out with later.
Also the patches are terrible with SE's terrible torrent system i decided to download utorrent and manually download the patches instead. Creating the horrid wait a simplistic 2-3 minutes.
I also enjoy the music, keeps me entertained, and i like that there is music everyone. Shows that while the lack of terrain, good graphics, music can keep my moneys worth. Great review, gave me quite the laugh.
Couple of things.
1. I play WoW and have never and most likely will never play a FF game. However, major props to SE for the graphics. WOW. They were great. However, after playing the Cataclysm beta and seeing the complete graphics makeover that blizzard is making to terrain, weather effects, water, all the in game models and also their complete overhaul of the graphics engine itself, I am not super duper impressed with SE relatively speaking, although it is good, no doubt. WoW graphics are not that bad at all, but one thing some of you may have had a problem with is that I know from experience that there is a very steep drop off in terms of WoW's graphics when you start disabling graphics features. At max settings it really does look stunning, esp in Northrend, which has new models, remember that all the models in Azeroth have not changed since mid 2004. 6 years makes a hell of a difference folks. Having said that though, even max graphics in current WoW doesn't compete with FFIV graphics but that will change come Cataclysm but until then FFIV will reign unchallenged in the title of best graphics in an MMO.
2. I really don't care about the whole thing about having it be to difficult on the engine to render everything as an excuse for copy/paste. Well I would have missed it too becaues I have no idea what is going on and I am much less experienced than Fony is in the world of MMOs. Thus I would have been stuck walking around everywhere.

Couple of things.
1. I play WoW and have never and most likely will never play a FF game. However, major props to SE for the graphics. WOW. They were great. However, after playing the Cataclysm beta and seeing the complete graphics makeover that blizzard is making to terrain, weather effects, water, all the in game models and also their complete overhaul of the graphics engine itself, I am not super duper impressed with SE relatively speaking, although it is good, no doubt. WoW graphics are not that bad at all, but one thing some of you may have had a problem with is that I know from experience that there is a very steep drop off in terms of WoW's graphics when you start disabling graphics features. At max settings it really does look stunning, esp in Northrend, which has new models, remember that all the models in Azeroth have not changed since mid 2004. 6 years makes a hell of a difference folks. Having said that though, even max graphics in current WoW doesn't compete with FFIV graphics but that will change come Cataclysm but until then FFIV will reign unchallenged in the title of best graphics in an MMO.

the major reason i hate Bastok in FFXI was on my first trip to dem to get the tele cystal i got lost. at the time i didnt know why i needed it or even how to get there but someone told me u should get it. i got the cystal & started on my way back when instead of going north i went south & there i was running in circles around Aulgung Pass in Konschtat for about 2 hours not knowing how to get back to Valkurm Dunes. when my cries for help went unanswered i was just about to log off forever when a White mage invite me to his party. the engish speaking japanese whm named Nekoyoshi then taught me how to use the auto translation to help me communicate with japanese players in the zone that didnt understand my cries for help, the <pos> command to find out my position so if i ever get lost all i need to do is know the position of the area i was trying to get to then spam the <pos> command to find my way & finally gave me a teleport dem. after he whm /point me in the direction of the dunes he then gave me 500gil to buy a map of the Bastok region & a Gausebit grass(used for the chocobo quest).
the reason i bring this up is while looking at the copy/paste montage it made me realize how lost i would be if i seen the same 2 rocks over & over again. i dont know if SE done this on purpose, to save memory or out of laziness. but the vertigo effect it can have on a person cant be aurgued & now i can say i am a little disappointed that i know about it. it will making it harder for me to regain the feeling of being lost in a huge zone.

FF noobs wither FFXIV or FFXI just have to ask for help. its just that simple. it is the reason why FF community is so strong we know we will need help & will have to help someone. u seen Emote quest, without payment nor a reason, just so no one else will have to suffer. 1 person passed along something he worked for just for the sake helping. i know u dont understand. its lost to most WoW players. u think its a learning curve when its just simple socialization skills.

Simple fact: If a game doesn't look fun, I'm not gonna play it. This looks utterly dull and repetitive. Even in the earliest stages of playing WoW when you're stuck on foot, it's not a tenth that far to walk to accomplish what's a 'kill three rats' quest.
Yeah yeah, mindless, baby-simple, whatever. You want artificially inflated difficulty in the form of time sinks? Okay. Play WoW and walk everywhere instead of running. It'll accomplish the same thing this does. Oh oh, and turn off all UI hints as to what an NPC is and force yourself to walk up to every NPC and try talking to them BEFORE you talk to a quest NPC.
Like the reviewer said, that was fine in the days before I was paying a monthly fee. WoW cuts out some(not all, but some)of the pointless timesink activities of an MMO by generally making it not onerous to travel around to complete quests, and never forcing you to do a quest because you have no other quests possibly available to you.
And for the ones who rank on him for using 'pasta'? PASTA MEANS PASTE. Literally. It's Italian. Go look it up, if you don't believe me.
Basically, the days of casual gaming are here. If you don't want to invest insane amounts of time to level a char and achieve things, there are plenty of games for that. Those who want to do the equivalent of trying to target shoot with a mirror while firing over the shoulder, you can play games like this. Have fun, the rest of us will be mocking you for looking like a moron. ;)

This really made me laugh! All these complaints about cut and paste ( I've played and didn't notice) let's talk about the graphics. Of course ffxiv is better cause its new but wow is cell shaded! That looks horrible and the only reason they did cause it's cheap to make! I rather take good graphics over cell shaded anyday. I think wow players are scared of this game and want others not to play it...which is fine with me. Wow is too easy, no challenge, and very easy to max your character (way too easy!) at least ff makes it a challenge to mac your character. Now of course I'm going to be called a ff fan (which I am) BUT Im a big fan of blizzard. Now I know you won't believe that but how many of you played Warcraft before Warcraft 2 was out ( I still have my copy)? I doubt many of you had. I thought I would love wow but of course I thought I was junk. I'm on day 2 of ffxiv and I think it's the best mmorpg I've played, of course that can change. Just wanted to give my two cents on this topic.

Back when 11 was in beta I looked into it. But it seems SE just does not evolve. All the FF games of late have been too linear, in both story and terrain. One of my biggest problems with what I saw in your review was the fact you were getting stuck on invisible walls. I hate obvious invisible walls with a passion!
You can't really compare World of Warcraft to this game for several reasons. WoW came out in 2004 first of all, of course it's dated, though aged much better IMO than the FF series. Most importantly, WoW's beta was good. Even in beta WoW was considered a great game with half a million subscribers to the beta alone.
Loved the older FF's greatly but they just haven't kept up with the times.

that being said however, it did seem like you were busting on this game instead of reviewing it. i myself don't mind that: i hate most MMOs, and i have never played nor am i planning to play this game.
but a review has got to be more rounded than the video above this post. you discussed some issues, starting area poor design and "copy pasta'd" terrain. but your older reviews of similar games (like allods online) include details about the other game systems such as combat, progression, crafting, etc.
i assume this is due to square enix's inane NDA policy, which totally disrupted your workflow on a typical video... so it's cool, i will definitely be coming back soon to check out your new video.
this raises the question, should you be reviewing videos, or doing something a bit different, your own brand of vblog. I never really noticed the copy pasted terrain in Limsa lominsa or ul'dah probbably because i wasn't looking for it though i did notice it in the black shroud. I made a complaint in the beta that it felt like there were more rocks in the black shroud than trees because more or less where ever you go there are rocks towering on either side of you. That being said i think the fact that market wards were completely disorganised in beta would have been a more important thing to bring up than a bit of copy pasted terrain especially since you chose to waste so much of the review fixated on it.
I never thought the beginning was a grind, it all went by in a flash for me each time i did it so i dont know why you had so much trouble with it. While some of your points were spot on, you also focused on the bad parts where as whenever you related to anything good you brushed over it as if its not important to enjoying the game. While it varies on what class you choose to play the battle system is great it gives you alot of customisation and the further you level the deeper the system gets. If you could get past the learning curve (which appears to have been fixed somewhat in the full version) the crafting and gathering minigames can be alot of fun as well.
There are some awesome views to be seen also, like the view of limsa lominsa and ul'dah, gridania not getting one due to all the rocks and trees in the way lol. As for most players playing Mi'qote i would rather that than lots of people playing fugly giant guys in panties =p atleast its soft on the eyes though i'm planning on playing lalafell myself.

I liked the review. It showed a couple of things that haven't quite gotten through to SE's head that we've been screaming about since alpha 1. Namely the fact that the game doesn't tell you what keys are mapped to what buttons during the tutorial.
As far as the copy paste of terrain, I noticed it to some extent in the alpha, but I also noticed the reason. Such expansive zones would be a problem if there was no way to breakup what your computer renders and such. I've noticed that in each of these copy paste areas (at least in the closed beta), there was a weird lack of mobs to attack.
that being said, It is my theory that to break up the larger "zone" that appears on the map, they have it split into obvious sub zones that are visible on the map by an extreme chokepoint, as well as minizones divided by thses copy and paste landmarks. I would equate each area of the map with obvious choke points as something similar to a "region" in XI, and each copy paste piece of terrain with missing mobs as a "zone". They act as a buffer between sections of the map, reducing what can be rendered. If there was some way to enable the wire frame rendering in XIV I could confirm this, but as far as I know, there is no such ability as of yet. I'm sure someone can modify it so that you can see the wireframes of everything that is rendered, but ahwell.
One of my other concerns with the game is that the content would not be there as far as standard quests. I didn't know how much exploration of the city that you covered, but there appeared to be very few npc quests outside the main linear quest line. I would like to wait a month or two on this purchase for the first patch and see what happens with the content, personally.
In the end, it would be nice to see them at least change the position of props in these copy and paste areas, but I think that they need to be somewhat similar to what they are for the sake of limiting how much GPU is being used. This could also be a reason why the game is so much more CPU intensive than it is GPU intensive.

I liked it a lot too... saw what it looked like and it looks like exactly why I quit FFXI for WoW 5 years ago.
and to those who keep saying that wow copy pastes terrain too... of course but not so obvious we are looking at terrains in the same area copy pasted in a 2-3 min interval wow does that but at much longer interval and less obvious.
Gameplay sounds dull and the quest system sounds awfull I'll be steering clear of that game thank you

Honestly, with the amount of detail going into these massive zones, I'm not surprised they Copy/Pasted the same type of terrain (though it does seem they did a bit too much....) These are a lot more elaborate (and linear) than WoW's zones are. Though, I know comparing this to WoW is sort of hard / unfair to do, as they are two completely different MMOs with VERY different designs / play structures and WoW has had a MUCH longer time to polish and balance (lol) the gameplay, zones...well, everything.
If it was a FF XI clone, we'd be complaining. If it was a WoW clone, we'd be complaining. MMOs are always rough initially, even WoW...no, compared to how it is now, ESPECIALLY WoW. It takes time, work, and community input to make MMOs better, and I think FF XIV could be something great...on down the line, anyway.

The FFXIV Open Beta was, hands down, the worst video game I've ever played.
There's no community. Zero. No one talks. Everyone just freaking STANDS THERE STARING AT THE BIG AETHERITE CRYSTAL.
I mean holy @#%^ing sh*t. 5 areas? A few different monsters? A couple of NPCs?
The original Final Fantasy for the NES had more @#%^ing content than this! And remains a lot more fun!
Watching the fans lap this tripe up is hilarious. Seriously, I'm just hanging out on the internet reading forums watching fans deal with this utter sh*t that has been given them and laughing as they try to rationalize spending 75 bucks / pounds / euros / whatever the @#%^ on this steaming pile of horsebird sh*t.
In fact, that's perhaps the best part of the whole terribad debacle - while a game series I knew and loved has been DESTROYED, at least the rest of the gaming world can remain tranquil knowing the worst video game players of all time will be busy doing GUILD@#%^INGLEVES for the next few months until FFXIV crashes. Which it will. Unfortunately.
It's too bad the collector's edition didn't come with some sort of mask, because the only way this game could have failed any harder was if, while wearing the mask, a big @#%^ing pumpkin came on the screen and your head melted into a pile of goo and bugs like in Halloween 3. But, of course, if that were the case the North American players would't even get the @#%^ing mask in their CE boxes, and instead get some Cabbage Patch Kid birth certificate.

Sounds like its not the FF14 lovers who got issues but more like you. I am a FF fan and FF11 fan, every game I am open to review. The pro's/Cons.
Now this is only my 4th MMO, being FFXI, WOW(shorttime) STO(startrek). STO had a lot of bugs and problems to begin with.
FF14 being worst? Not sure. For sure STO/FF14 only two MMO I played from day 1 of release. FFXI I played on EU release Day 1 and WoW I played after about 3 years being released?..
Anyway, I am open giving FF14 time to grow. To me it has probably 6 months to a year. Die and crash? Doubt it. A lot of people gave FFXI 1 year and now look at it.
FF14 has a lot of potential but I do agree with the flaws and it does feel like it is unfinished. Perhaps they should of gave it another 12 months before release. But I have only jsut started, my first problems occured before I even managed to get on the game but now I am on it I can give it time and see if I actually enjoy it.

Pretty much expected the review to be like this from watching Gamebreaker lol. I still love FFXIV and it appeals to me because its different. Pasta'd is a saying bro... It's not a spelling mistake just so you know and yeah it look's good in terms of graphics and sh*t but the rest if of the game looks pretty bad. To make this a game that will want to be played they really need to fix a lot of sh*t like the terrain or this game will end up being dead before it even starts.

As for Mike - tbh dude you didn't do yourself any favors the way you opened up with the tutorial fight upsetting you, and for whatever reason you mash the "A" button on your controller and you're playing an RPG - its your fault you have this pre-conceived conception in your mind of an RPG that isn't an RPG. As for the game having linear progression, all Japanese RPGs have been like this, more or less, for the last century - American RPGs give you all this freedom and all these branches that you can turn off of but imo they almost always stint on story (yes even Bioware which sucked balls). And how do you excuse WoW for having copy pasted terrain but bash FFXIV for it? atleast FFXIV didn't look out dated on release.

1. Everyone has 1-10 posts because there is a lot of love and hate for this game, so people are probably creating accounts just to post their opinions on this review (like me!)
2. It's his fault for having pre-conceived notions of what an RPG is and isn't, but all JRPGs have linear progression and he should expect that? Isn't that a pre-conceived notion? In fact giving the game the same damn brand name as every other square enix game is giving us a pre-conceived notion. Saying we should wipe the slate and get ready to look at the game with fresh eyes is ridiculous. Saying we should wipe the slate and get ready to look at only some parts of the game with a fresh set of eyes is hypocritical and convenient for fanboyism.
3. He -did- mention WoW, Warcraft came out in 2004, 6 years ago. We should expect a little bit more in our MMO worlds than re-skinning WoW terrain right? Personally I don't think copy pasted terrain is a big deal, but its a legitimate complaint when someone goes into the game expecting awesome and finds a JRPG that has great graphics that... repeat. over and over again.
And wow was dated when it was released? No. Lets see what was released around 2004:
Battlefield Vietnam
Black and White 2
City of Heroes
Dungeon Siege 2
I think the only game that could support your argument that WoW's graphics were dated when released would be Far Cry, and that is an incredibly silly comparison. Comparing any game to a generation's crysis as a standard is stupid. Comparing an MMO to a generation's crysis is a -really- poorly thought out comparison. Expecting a huge non-linear world to have the same graphical standards as a single player story based game is really, really stupid.
It's really cool that FFXIV does that, it has a very very big world and incredible graphics. That is quite an accomplishment for an MMO. However, it is a VERY legitimate complaint to feel cheated to see great graphics that are _-+recycled+-_ everywhere you go.
Added silly flourishes for your enjoyment.
4. Maybe MikeB could have made this a bit clearer, but people who watch most of his stuff know that he thinks auto attacking and tab selecting and killing X of Y are all boring and dated MMO mechanics. Anyone who agrees with those sentiments probably will not like FFXIV, and will definitely feel like they are buying an incomplete and/or dated product.

I went into this game's open beta prepared to love every minute of it, and I couldn't like it less if I tried. Trust me. Some people aren't just beating up on your beloved game. Some people (Well, a lot actually) just think it sucks. Sorry.

I too played FFXI when it was first released. It was initially a terrible game with not much content. I quit because I didn't have the patience to wait for it to get better. I went back to it a few months later and stuck with it for over a year. To this day, I still think FFXI was the best mmorpg I've ever played. I am actually very impressed with FFXIV's character development system. However, I know that it's like FFXI and lacks a lot of content at release. I also know that Square Enix has a reputation to uphold, especially to their based fans. I'm not going to be surprise that this game will be 20 times better in the next couple of months. (couple = 2)

You were quite generous with this one and while I was initially very excited for this game, it came to be a big disappointment, not only to me but to most of my friends who were already concerned that SE was cutting corners and re-fabricating FF11 too much. It's almost like they changed things that were unnecessary, and left things unchanged that perhaps could of used a makeover.
Also the zones, while expansive, aren't varied. In FF11 you had many more smaller zones with entirely different texture/tilesets. I would take more loading screens and more smaller maps than 5 bigass zones, where one corner is no different than the next.
Combat does get better when you level up but there is still problems with animation syncing. Also, regarding the zones, you never see much else in them, it's just cliffs, valleys, shrubs, there are no NPC's, no little houses or small villages, rundown shacks or or other landmarks in the zones that give it character. This was something I've seen very commonly in WoW, and even some F2P games.

Great review, as always. The irony is easy to pick...and I mean, easier than usual. I also have something against characters standing still for a good ol 5 seconds in combat. It doesn't look like combat. It looks like a cheezy opera.
Also, the Copy Pasta Terrain made me think of something else. Something I made maps with long ago...can't really pinpoint it... OH, Red Alert 2.

Frankly, this review was a LOT more positive than the game deserves. He didn't say anything about the complete lack of graphics optimization, horrible keyboard controls, the crashes, the 8 leve per 48 hour limit, the nonsensical crafting process, the ridiulously laggy UI and millions of pointless nested menus, the no retainer search/no auction house, the no healing experience + way disproportionate heal aggro in parties.

Sorry dude. This is a standard practice in games since mario, and it is not illegitimate today. Some may accuse me of being a SE fanboy, those who know my usual posts would know you're wrong. However saying it's ok for WoW but not FFXIV screams of WoW fanboyism.
This review was biased for the WoW crowd, not made for the FF crowd as he tries to cover his ass by claiming at the end.
Will not watch more of this 'show'. Some complaints were valid but devoting so much production time to bitching about copy pasta stinks of someone that doesn't know what he's talking about.

I think the problem isn't copy-paste in an MMO. Its that its in an MMO that is using stunning graphics as a selling point, and then uses an obvious shortcut to achieve those graphics. Its like going to see a movie and they don't bother to disguise the really awesome set pieces as cardboard. Yeah, they still look really awesome, but it kills the sense of immersion and they would have been better off without putting all their budget in to such set pieces. And I think the other problem is the distance between seeing a copy. In WoW, yes, there are only like 5 cave templates. But you don't see them within 5 feet of each other. While you do see them fairly often, you only see the same cave maybe once an hour. This is complaining about seeing the copy/paste every minute or so. Big difference.

Yeah, if this is released with no major changes from what I just saw, i'll go into my local videogame store and laugh at each individual copy of the game on the shelves at that time. Then I might follow people home who bought it and laugh at them too...
No wonder they left the NDA in place for so long, they knew it would get slammed.
