LI Joe, breakout star of Evo 2016, to frontline new documentary series starting this August
Joe "LI Joe" Ciaramelli is a ready-made sports hero. The sole American competitor among the Top 8 at Evolution's inaugural Street Fighter V tournament earlier this month, Ciaramelli charmed audiences around the globe with his expressive, humble demeanor and down-home backstory; the pink backpack he wears in honor of his mother, who died of breast cancer; and his father, who flew out from New York to support him on the evening of the finals. In the space of a Sunday evening, Ciaramelli went from being "Long Island Joe" to "America's Sweetheart" (source: me).
Ciaramelli placed a respectable fifth in the competition, and flew back to Long Island to a hero's welcome. Now, he's appearing in a new documentary series about the fighting game community, FGC Raw. You can check out the first teaser trailer above.
The first documentary project from FloKO, a recently-launched esports offshoot of FloSports, FGC Raw will spotlight several top players from the competitive fighting game scene, with Ciaramelli appearing as the first among these.
"We aim to raise the level of coverage of the fighting game community with in-depth storytelling and comprehensive coverage of top events and competitions," said FloSports co-founder and CEO Martin Floreani, in conjunction with FloKO's launch earlier this month. "We want to shine a light on this sport and contribute to its continued growth."
FGC Raw will debut this August, most likely as an exclusive on FloKO.tv (I've reached out to FloSports to verify this).
UPDATE 7/26: A FloKO representative has confirmed that the series will be a site exclusive, but free for public viewing. Production is being handled by FloKO's in-house staff with Floreani serving as executive producer.
