Upcoming Pokemon Go feature makes it easier to catch rare monsters

Finally, cheevos will be worth something.

Late yesterday, Pokemon Go developer Niantic Labs teased a new feature for the popular mobile app, one which will hopefully take some of the pain out of catching 'em all.

Like many games, Pokemon Go offers achievements -- in-game medals awarded for reaching certain milestones like X number of Poison-type Pokemon, and so forth. In an upcoming update, these achievements will now serve a purpose: each awarded medal in a given category will grant a "catch bonus" which will make the odds of encountering a rare Pokemon of that type easier.

This means -- to offer an extreme example -- that if you catch enough of Pokemon Go's ever-ubiquitous Pidgeys, you stand a better chance of catching a rare and powerful Snorlax. Imagine!

Niantic has offered no firm release date for the update, only that it will arrive "soon." Now if only it would roll out that "nearby Pokemon" feature for all users...
